Mini beasts are small animals without a backbone called invertebrates. As a part of our studies we were required to produce a PowerPoint that consisted primarily of our own work. We worked in groups of four and sourced our material from the computer microscopes, our photography and research on the internet. We had to observe and record the characteristics, habitat, diet and special features of chosen beasts. After a lot of hard work and editing we presented our PowerPoint to the rest of the class. As well as producing a PowerPoint, during technology, we were required to plan and construct a mini beast enclosure and a game suitable for our buddy class to play. We also went out into the school yard where we collected and analysed the different types of mini beasts found in the school environment. We discovered all kinds of mini beasts including; spiders, woodlice, ants, bees, slugs, crickets, mosquitoes, beetles, worms and snails! As a part of our unit on mini beasts we worked collaboratively in groups to produce a narrative for our buddies on our allocated mini beast. Some of the titles of these stories included; The Five Ants, The Crickety Netball Game, Worm Squirm and There’s a Spider in the Burger. These narratives will prove to be very popular with our Wattle 2 buddy class! Our final activity was to devise a beastly snack to share with our buddies (some of which are: Hot Worms, Wobbly Wood Lice, Honey Ants, Cricket Caviar and Spiders on a Log). We have written invitations inviting our buddy class to an afternoon of fun, games, story reading and eating mini beast snacks! B5 is excited to showcase their hard work to parents and other students! BANKSIA 5’S MINI BEASTS

From the Principal’s Desk

Tim Cremin is on leave for 3 weeks and I will be in the chair for the that time, likewise Jim Boyes will be the Deputy Principal . Assembly Congratulations to Mrs Simon, Ms Darlow and B5 for their, “60th Annual World Cooking Championship”. I have it on very good authority that the assembly was very entertaining and funny. Well done to the French contestants, Pierre and Margot otherwise known as Noah and Giselle, who won the competition!! Très magnifique !! PEAC Testing All of the year four students have just completed the PEAC Identification Testing. This is in keeping with the Principles of Inclusivity, which provides opportunities for all students to be recognised and accommodated according to their talents and potential. The tests used are the TOLA 4 and SPM. TOLA 4 is a Test of Learning Ability, which covers the areas of language, maths and logic. SPM, (Raven’s Standard Progressive Matrices), is a test of non-verbal reasoning ability that indicates a student’s potential. Year four parents will be advised of the outcome. WAMSE (Western Australian Monitoring Standards in E ducation) The year five and seven parents have been sent information about the WAMSE testing scheduled for week three, in term three . The WAMSE testing program measures the performance of students in aspects of Science and Society and Environment. This complements information from the National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN). If you have a child in either of these year levels and wish for him/her to be withdrawn from the testing please see you child’s teacher and complete the appropriate form that you can obtain from the office. Incursions The children have been involved in the First Aid Focus Incursion and also the Constitutional Centre Incursion both of which are extremely important and very interesting. Thank you to Ms Sumastra for organising them. Parking With the awful tragedy that occurred this week, it is important for us again to be vigilant and adhere to the road rules and the parking signs around the school. Please ensure that you have the safety of our students as your first priority when picking up or dropping off your children. Please do not double park, park in no standing zone s or in the staff car parks. Parents, please do not walk your children through the car parks as they are out of bounds to all children. All of these practices are extremely dangerous for our students. Also, please consider others by not parking in the designated marked disabled parking bay unless you have a current ACROD sticker. We appreciate your cooperation in this matter. Thank you for taking the time to read this newsletter. Sue Martin Principal

JUMP ROPE FOR HEART

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Bull Creek Primary School is participating in the Heart Foundation Jump Rope for Heart program again this year and we would love your support! Heart Foundation Jump Rope for Heart is an exciting and non-competitive program which encour-ages children to become more active through skipping, learning new skills and raising vital funds for heart research and community health programs. Skipping is an excellent way for children to keep fit and healthy. Your child(ren) has been learning a range of fun skipping skills and new tricks. We are also emphasising the importance of regular physi-cal activity and the importance of healthy eating for a healthy lifestyle. Jump Rope for Heart is also a great way to encourage children to get involved in our community and support Australia’s leading heart health charity, the Heart Foundation. The Jump Rope team provide us with lots of resources and support to implement the program and in return we ask that students help by seeking sponsorship for their involvement. Sponsorship is easy – simply go online to www.heartfoundation.org.au/jumprope , click on the green ‘Kids Join Now’ button, and register your ch ild today!

A secure fundraising page will be created as soon as you register; all you need to do then is click the ‘Email Sponsors’ link to send your family and friends an email asking them for their support… It’s that easy!

This is an easy, safe way for your child to monitor their progress, receive bonus prizes and even receive sponsorship from family and friends who are further afield.

Great prizes can be won if you register and fundraise online.

At the end of the program we will be holding a Jump Off, an event to celebrate and culminate the Heart Foundation Jump Rope for Heart program. This will be held on 4.7. 2013. The Jump Off day is a great opportunity for you to witness how much fun skipping can be, come along and pick up a rope! Let your teacher know when your child has finished fundraising online. You may like to print out a copy of the donations received online. Our school and your child(ren) also benefit from the money raised through Heart Foundation Jump Rope for Heart. The Heart Foundation offers 10 percent of the money we raise to our school. Thank you for joining us in the fight against heart disease. Yours sincerely, Tanja Colgan
