Newsletter No. 13 Term 2 Week 12 1 st July 2020 Deputy Principal’s Corner te iwi tahi tatou we are one familyDear Parents and Guardians Year 6 students have had a week of learning in their new environment in Totara Ridge - the upper storey of the new building. Totara Ridge is so named to represent the natural ridge line between Colonial Knob and Mt Kaukau which is visible from Churton Park and definitely from the top storey of our new building. Totara Ridge was named by the early settlers so it is appropriate for us to use this name within our environment. Students have been reflecting on the history of the site. Here are their comments from the House Captains about their new environment: Campbell: In the past Totara Ridge had native bush, kiwi and other native animals with no pests. It is quite different now. Thomas: We have a variety of teachers/students to help us learn. Belle: I like being in Totara Ridge because you can easily socialize with students from all three classes. Sophie L: Totara Ridge used to be a lot less polluted with wonderful wildlife. We don’t want any pests here anymore. Vanessa: With their open spaces the new buildings help us to move around easily and are great to learn in. Enesh: We have quiet zones where we can go for different activities. That really helps our learning. Yenul: I am enjoying working with all the teachers as they are all getting to know and understand each one of us. Sophie Y: With so many students together we have lots of new students who we can learn from. Ash: The new building absorbs the sound and it makes it easier to listen and hear other people’s comments Niyumi: Being together is a real good feeling. Deputy Principal’s Corner – te iwi tahi tatou – we are one family…

Dear Parents and Guardians Year 6 students have had a week of learning in their new environment in Totara Ridge - the upper storey of the new building. Totara Ridge is so named to represent the natural ridge line between Colonial Knob and Mt Kaukau which is visible from Churton Park and

definitely from the top storey of our new building. Totara Ridge was named by the early settlers so it is appropriate for us to use this name within our environment. Students have been reflecting on the history of the site. Here are their comments from the House Captains about their new environment:

Campbell: In the past Totara Ridge had native bush, kiwi and other native animals with no pests. School Entrance Over the two week term break the Admin Block will be demolished. The Churton Drive entrance will be blocked off to allow the demolition crew the space to do this. If you do want to enter the school grounds during this time, please use the Dormar Place or Cranwell St entrances.

To the wonderful families who have donated microwave ovens to our new classrooms. Your generosity is much appreciated.

Olivia At the start of the year, one of our Year 6 students was diagnosed with cancer. Many of you helped support her by contributing to the Give-a-Little page. I am very happy to tell you that Olivia has come through her treatment successfully and is now able to attend school again. We are so pleased to have Olivia back with us. LOST PROPERTY The large plastic bin in the hall foyer is overflowing with clothing from Term 1 and Term 2. Please come and check if any of it belongs to your child. There are puffer jackets, sweatshirts etc which would be very handy with this changing weather. Any clothing left at the end of the term will be donated to a local charity.

Nott House Room 15’s writing recently published in the newsletter has highlighted the school's connection to this historical property. The special heritage building is owned by a school family and is on a little farm alongside the rail line halfway between Wellington and Porirua. Nott House has significant historical value to our area as one of the first constructed houses in the Wellington area and the sixth oldest surviving building in the country! Unfortunately, at times the house suffers from vandalism. The repairs, as well as important conservation for the heritage building, costs the family in time and money.

If anyone is interested in supporting the conservation efforts, you can purchase their firewood, kindling and sawdust or, donate your time and assistance to the House and Garden. Please contact Donna Sherlock 021-162-9704 or email [email protected] for further information.
