Although football is obviously a very important feature of the weekly day release scheme, academic studies are not neglected! Felix and his team demonstrated how they put literacy and numeracy skills to good use in the context of football, with interview techniques, note taking, report writing and commentary, kit design and marketing strategies. Altogether it was a wonderful insight into the holistic approach the club has to the youngsters in their care and for the boys it was clear that they are all working hard in all areas and they are fantastic ambassadors for the club and the scheme. SWIMMING COMPETITION @ Claremont school Report by Mrs Overy The swimming team selected from Y4,5 & 6 went to Claremont Senior S chool pool to take on Claremont Prep School. A lot of the squad was unable to attend so those that did had to fill in all the gaps and most swam most strokes whether it was their strong stroke or not. The squad was nervous as this was their 1st gala of the year. There was no reason for nerves, however, as the team all swam their hearts out and we had many very close finishes and lots of wins. The squad members who deserve a mention are Jack Horton who did not lose a race, also Elena, Mia, Eliza and Sophie who won one of their races. The team did themselves proud as they swam their hardest giving their all even when they were tired and never gave up. This was most obvious in the relays where we often had to fight from behind to win. So, congratulation to the whole squad. I am very excited about organising another gala as although we lost overall on points we were very close and showed great potential for the future.

FOOTBALL Report by Christopher Y6 On Friday 5th May Sacred Heart played a football tournament at Battle Abbey. Five teams entered the tournament. In each game there was one point for a goalless draw two points for a scoring draw, and three points for a win, as well as getting one point for every goal scored. In our first game we played Bricklehurst and missed some key opportunities, making the score 0-0 at half-time. In the second half we missed more opportunities. A great save from Edward kept us in the game, almost immediately George threaded through a lovely pass to Oliver who hit a very powerful shot into the back of the net to make the final score 1-0. In that game we got four points – three for a win and one for a goal. In our second match we played Battle Abbey B. This time we made sure we scored the goals, beating them 10-0, with George scoring four, Christopher three, Josh two and Harry one. NETBALL Report by Mrs Overy

On Friday 5th May Sacred Heart U11 Netball team was invited to the BAS cup at Battle Abbey school. This was a High 5 tournament where all the players rotate around the positions every half time. This means all have an opportunity to play every position by the end of the tournament. There are also a few different rules to full size netball Our 1st match was against Stonegate Primary who were very tall and very used to playing the High 5 format. They quickly scored a few goals while we were adjusting to the different rules. We quickly worked out we needed to dodge in front of our taller opposition and started to get the ball into our circle more often. We played really well in the 2nd half and actually won this half but due to us letting in too many goals early in the 1st half we narrowly lost this match. The next match was against Bricklehurst which was a mixed squad. In the 1st half we marked really well and the game was very close. In the 2nd half Bricklehurst used their height and the boys dominated the game in the

centre court. Their Shooter could not miss, so every time the ball was in their circle they scored. Unfortunately we struggled to score on every chance. The final result was a win to Bricklehurst. Our last match was against Battle Abbey Prep School. We started playing really well dodging in front of our opposition into space and made some excellent passing phases down the court but sadly we could not convert this into a goal. Battle Abbey when they did get the ball, in the circle, scored every time. However the team did not give up and fought hard to the end.

Another busy and exciting week at Sacred Heart School where learning is fun!

Year 4 Outdoor Classroom As part of our ‘Outdoor Learning’ topic, Year 4 used their mapping skills to track down the lost teddies. They learnt about reading maps and using compasses.

In Geography Year One have been learning about the UK weather and in

particular about the different ways water falls to the ground. We now know what drizzle, light and heavy rain is and can read and draw the symbols. So if you struggled reading today’s weather forecast, just ask one of the children, they will be pleased to assist you. In Science we went for a walk around the school and looked for signs of spring. You would be surprised what 20 pairs of little eyes can discover!
