TEACHING RESPONSIBILITIES

2010

We have now completed our staffing

schedule for next year, based on an

overall enrolment of 725 students. This

is a drop of 15 students on our census

date enrolment figure in February. We

welcome back Sandra McCrum who has

been on Leave Without Pay for the past

two years. Geoff Ablett also returns,

after a year as the Mayor of the City of

Casey. Geoff is, however, returning on a

part time basis of one day per week.

Joining us for the first time is Katherine

Woskoboenko, a graduate teacher. In

the grade lists below you will notice that

Karise Dell is grade sharing with Geoff

Ablett. This is because Karise will be on

leave one day per week in 2010 to

undertake post graduate studies in

student wellbeing. You may not

recognise the name, Jodie Luketic. That

is because Luketic will be Jodie

Donnellen’s married surname following

her forthcoming marriage.

We have made a number of changes to

our non grade support provision. Rose

Scavo will be providing grade support to

our grade 3/4’s because these grades will

be our largest next year with class sizes

being 28 or 29 per class. This year

Heather Mathews provided that support

to our Prep grades which were 2 to 3

students above the 21 enrolments per

grade notional ideal. Our current prep

numbers for next year are 19 or 20

children per grade.

Of the 29 grades we will have next year,

we will have only 4 composite classes.

Whilst we do not have a problem with

composite classes, in recent years we

have chosen to have fewer of them

rather than more. In the grade 5/6 area

we have just one composite class. Given

the numbers of children we will have in

grades 5 and 6 next year it was not

possible to have 7 straight grades

without having lopsided numbers across

the two grade levels. Alternatively, we

did not want to create 7 composite

classes as the straight grade option

provided some logistical benefits this

year. As you will note, we have placed

Sue Naismith, one of our most

experienced teachers in the composite

grade.

I am very pleased that we have been able

to maintain our allocation of Additional

Assistance teachers who will be working

primarily in the junior grades in the areas

of literacy and numeracy.

On the extension side of programs, our

ICT (LEEP) extension program has been

highly successful this year and will be

continued. It will be augmented next

year with a new program – Mathematics

extension for our senior students. This

program will be delivered by Robert

Barr, two days per week. Mathematics is

a passion of Robert’s and after several

years as a member of our Additional

Assistance team in the junior grades, this

will enable our talented students in

ECHOES FROM OUR FIRST 20

YEARS

Back in the late 1990’s when we last held

a school fete, someone came up with the

bright idea that we could raise some

funds by conducting what was called a

‘cowpat’. The concept involves marking

out the park in one metre squares, with

people paying a fee to nominate the

square in which the cow would ‘relieve

itself’ first. The winner would receive a

valuable prize. Unfortunately the cow

wandered over to the pitcher’s mound,

seriously damaging the mound before

soiling many parts of the baseball pitch.

To make matters worse we had

inadvertently failed to obtain permission

from the baseball club to use the park

for this purpose. It all created quite a

stink! Thankfully we eventually made our

peace with the baseball club and have

never again used the baseball pitch for a

cow pat.

QUESTIONS (FAQ’s)

Q. How many Assistant Principals

have we had at Berwick Lodge P.S.?

A. More than we have had principals! In

fact we have had a total of 6 A.P.’s.

Evelyn Butfield was our first, followed by

Averil Moore, Rosemary Cosentino, Ann

Ng and our current A.P.’s Lynne Brenner

and Debbie Cusack.

20TH ANNIVERSARY FETE

Families are reminded that tomorrow is our school’s 20th Anniversary Fete

and the PFA have been very busy working towards making the evening a

success for all. The children are very excited and looking forward to the

many attractions of the fete. Pre-ordered show bags and ride wristbands

will be distributed to the children at school tomorrow. There will be some

show bags for purchase at the fete and tickets for the rides will also be

available. Parents should be aware that it is expected that children will be

accompanied by an adult at the fete. We look forward to seeing lots of families enjoying themselves tomorrow

evening.

PREP TRANSITION 2010 This week we had the pleasure of

meeting our 2010 Prep students when they visited the school for the first of

their transition sessions. The children took part in a tour of the school with

their parents and prep staff. It was great to see so many happy students

proudly wearing their ‘I’m enrolled at Berwick Lodge’ t-shirts. Our specialist teams are looking forward to meeting

our 2010 Preps over the next two weeks.

STUDENTS IN THE GROUNDS

OUTSIDE SCHOOL HOURS We have noticed that several students

are arriving at school very early each morning and playing in the playground

without adult or guardian supervision. We remind parents that our staff are

on duty from 8:45AM to 9:00AM in the morning and 3:30PM to 3:45PM

in the afternoon. Dom Marie, our OHSC Coordinator can be contacted

directly on 9769 825I if parents would like further information about the

excellent before and after school care programs.

We have also observed a number of students who appear to return to

school after hours, some as late as 6:00 to 7:00PM in the evening. We are

concerned that these students are placing themselves at risk as there is no

supervision at this time and there are many areas of the school yard that are

isolated. On occasions children have been seen trespassing on the roof of

the school and the potential dangers of this practice should be evident.

Students have been reminded of the risks involved with being in the grounds outside of the supervision

times and we appreciate parent support in this matter.

Celebrate Casey Kids 5 to 12 – Update Celebrate Casey Kids 5 to 12 (CCK 5-12) is a

community group of Casey primary schools, parents,

community workers and service providers.

Learning through Sharing Day

The CCK 5-12 Learning through Sharing Day was held

last month in celebration of children’s week. Doveton

Heights choir opened the morning with Indian Toms

Toms and Home among the gum trees’. The morning

was a great success with 10 local schools participating

and displaying projects that provided an opportunity

to students to actively show their achievements, and

share their ideas amongst the City of Casey primary

school community. The students showed knowledge

and enthusiasm and thoroughly enjoyed the

opportunity to talk about their achievements. There

were two wonderful presentations by students from

Casey Grammar and Lynbrook Primary School. There

were also displays by Christians Helping in Primary

Schools, who did a wonderful talk to the students on

how to work together, Casey Cardinia Library

Corporation, Healthy 4 Life and the SHARE project at

the City of Casey, a disability awareness program for

primary schools. Teachers, parents, grandparents,

City of Casey Children’s’ Services staff and other

community members all expressed feedback in

relation to the participation throughout the day, with

particular emphasis on the increased confidence of

the project presenters and the high level of pride

demonstrated by all participants.

I invite you to join the working party or add your

name to the email distribution list to stay in touch

with the ongoing work of the group. The next meeting

is Wednesday, 2 December 2009, 9.30am – 11.00am,

at Hillsmeade Primary School, 82 The Promenade,
