NOVEMBER 2016 VOL. 38 NO. 3 YORK HERITAGE QUILTERS GUILD NEWS 1 President’s Message "Even if something is left undone, everyone must take time to sit still and watch the leaves turn." ~ Elizabeth Lawrence This quote speaks to me at this time of year. Summer has come to an end, but for me it is only a new beginning. As I look outside my front window, my maple tree is ablaze with gold and crimson, and on several occasions I have found myself pausing to watch the leaves rustle in the breeze. These are the colours that are most joyous to me, fresh and vivid, the last hurrah of nature before the blanket of snow settles. I also use this time of year to explain my weekend drives into the country to the uninitiated. I frequently state “I am going to watch those leaves change colour and commune with nature”, using this guise for fabric acquisition road trips. As the squirrels are preparing for winter, so am I, increasing my stash for the winter months. We all need brightly coloured fabrics to brighten up those winter blahs, and who wants to run out to get thread mid-quilt in the snow? Unfortunately, it also generates a small problem. It causes me start more UFOs luckily we have the UFO Challenge this year! Have you accepted my challenge from the October guild meeting? This month’s speaker is Mary Pal, a talented fibre artist from Almonte, Ontario who specializes in sculpting portraits and designs in cheesecloth and then stitching them to a background fabric. PROGRAMIn October, Reeze Hanson entertained YHQG members with her lecture "The Hexagon & Beyond: Not Just your Grandmother’s Flower Garden!". Who knew that the humble hexie could create such diverse quilts? Reeze showed us many examples from her extensive collection of vintage hexie quilts - many stunning and some, shall we say, “interesting”?

At the November meeting, we’re looking forward to Mary Pal's presentation, "Accidental Artist". She will share her early explorations with textiles and traditional quilts followed by an unexpected leap into the world of art quilts. The development of her art is explored along with the artists who have inspired her along the way.

You may have seen some of Mary's work at last summer’s Quilt Canada conference in Toronto. I'm looking forward to a close-up look at more of her distinctive works!

If you are interested in renting an 8’ table for only $20 to sell your wares, they will only be available until November 6 on a first-come first-served basis.

Please contact Irena Hopper at [email protected].

YHQG Table at the Holiday Marketplace

Bev Sturgeon has accepted the challenge of running the Guild table at our upcoming sale. All proceeds from this table will be used by the Guild. If you have few items that you have made, and don’t want your own table, please drop them off at the Guild table. We appreciate your support!

Whew, what a whirlwind we've had!

In October, our wonderful guest instructor Reeze Hanson gave a fabulous workshop on Seminole Patchwork. Not only did we learn the history of this traditional style of quilting, but worked on a "modern" take on strips made up of various colours cut apart and stitched back together. Beautiful work was produced in a wide array of colour choices. Reeze has generously offered YHQG members a 20% discount on patterns ordered via her website using this coupon code: MGD20%.

Another exceptional workshop on her Diamond Star design took place the second day. It was packed full of tips and hints on a number of techniques including those designed to reduce bulk at seams. If you missed these two, please take advantage of upcoming workshops. There's always something unexpected to be learned besides what's in the workshop summary.

Some spaces in Mary Pal’s Cheesecloth Portraiture class (Nov. 16) are still available, but they're going fast. We're also taking registrations for the 2017 workshops: Debbie Grifka on modern quilting - Clerestory on Negative Space (March 21) and Albert Coté on Quilted Rugs (April 18).

Wednesday, November 16 Introduction to Cheesecloth Portraiture

This introductory workshop covers a unique method of manipulating fabric that combines “sculpting” and “painting” with fibres that employs the use of transparency, to teach students how to create effective portraits with cheesecloth/gauze.

Included is a brief overview of how photographs may be adjusted on a computer, tablet or photocopier. Working from a simple photo that Mary provides, you will learn all the skills required to create stunning portraits out of simple cheesecloth. The class covers sculpting, machine appliqué, and methods for finishing and mounting.Students who bring a machine to class can complete the portrait; others can have the portrait ready to complete quickly at home and can experiment with sculpting other shapes in the afternoon.

MEMBERSHIPI am happy to report that our 2016/2017 membership has increased slightly this year, for the first time in a few years. In this regard, I’d like to acknowledge all those who have renewed their membership, and welcome three new members who joined us at the October meeting. Please extend a warm welcome to Kathleen Campbell, Julie Forbes and Sandy Moore.

I would also like to thank my volunteers, Rae Murphy and Susan Oren, for their assistance at the Membership desk, and help in greeting all of our attendees last month.Happy Quilting - see you on the 15th.

SHOW & SHARE We had seven quilts for “Show and Share” at the October meeting. Even though there were only a few, they were proof that we are indeed a dynamic Guild with members willing to learn new techniques, and then willing to present this work to the group. Thank you to Trudy Molke, Martha Huffman, Ruthie Snell, Kathy Devins, and Shirley Dawson for sharing your quilts with us.

I also want to thank Toby Sklash for helping with intake of quilts, and to Paul Craig, for providing his long arms to hang the quilts on the wall! We are in need of people to volunteer as “Quilter of the Month”. As you have seen from the October meeting, it need not be one person; rather it is quite fun to come as a group to show what you work on when you get together. Do you all work on Japanese quilts, neutrals, Sue Spargo-inspired embroidery, or do you all just enjoy each other’s company and work on “whatever”? Our Guild is made up of artistic and curious people and we love to see what others get up to between meetings. Be brave. All work has value. We are not here to criticize. Sign up and help enrich our meetings.

Please bring your quilts to the front of the auditorium before 6:45 p.m., so that we can display them on the wall if they are small, or place them on the stage if they are large.

Our White Glove volunteers for the November meeting are:

• Kathy Devins • Martha Huffman • Diana Kennedy• Annabelle Payne• Phoebe Visser • Margaret Whitehead

There will be reserved seating for you at the front of the auditorium.

YORK HERITAGE T.G.I.F. AWARDSIt’s back ... the York Heritage Quilters Guild Thank Goodness it’s Finished (T.G.I.F.) Awards! This is a fun and friendly competition open to all members of our guild. If you are one of those people who always starts a quilting project, and focuses on it without distractions until it is completed, you may not have a UFO lurking amid your fabric stash. But for the rest of us who are mired in UFOs, here is an incentive to complete one of them!

Extra points to you for having a quilt ready to enter in the Celebration of Quilts XIII show to be held in November 2017! We are hoping to see a lot of new quilts.

Here are the entry criteria and process:• One quilt per member, any size• The quilt must have been started before January

2016• Submit a picture of the quilt in its current,

unfinished stage (maybe a pile of blocks or a pile of patches. Or some appliquéd bits or perhaps a completed top needing binding or quilting)

• Write a brief note explaining why it became a UFO in the first place• Pledge to finish it by sending in the entry form (see page 10) along with the photo• Deadline for pledges/entries is January 31, 2017• Bring your finished quilt to the May 2017 meeting

Completed quilts will be displayed at our annual general meeting in May and those present will vote for viewer’s choice as well as a variety of categories (yet to be revealed). Entries can qualify for more than one category. Winners in each category will receive a York Heritage T.G.I.F. Award.

So, dig out the UFO, photograph it in its current stage and bring it with the entry form to the November or January meetings. Alternatively, you may mail your entry to:Donnaleen Vlossak, 4 Tanburn Place, Don Mills, ON M3A 1X5.

You have 5 more months to complete your project, and then bask in the admiration (and envy) of your fellow guild members.

Stay tuned for further enticements!
