I remember well the aroma of walking into grandmother’s house, the fresh baked homemade dinner rolls, the turkey roasting in the oven, pumpkin pies cooling on the counter. Oh how it made my mouth water in eager expectation of a great meal! Those memories of Thanksgiving Day at my grandparents are still very strong after all of these years – the gathering of aunts and uncles and cousins I had not seen in months. Many fond memories were created. Moments of thanks giving were shaped. Now that I am older, all of my grandparents have long since passed away and several of my aunts and uncles too, I am grateful for those memories. It is those memories that linger and make me relish the thought of yet one more Thanksgiving coming around the corner and the memories to be made to hold on to for years to come. Perhaps this time of year brings back for you those favored and cherished memories of Thanksgiving as well.
In his letter to the Philippians, the Apostle Paul wrote how he gave thanks to God for those who were in his life and made a lasting impact (1:3). Those memories he had of them were strong just as they are for many of us. And as I reflect on this verse and all that Paul was saying I am reminded that perhaps I do not thank God enough for those who are in my life and have made lasting impacts on who I am. Yes, I remember my family and friends when I think of Thanksgiving’s past and how much they meant to me, but perhaps I should be a little more intentional about giv-ing thanks for the gift of love and grace my aunts and uncles and cousins passed on to me all those many years ago.
Perhaps, following Paul’s lead, I should be giving thanks to God more often for the joy of my spouse and our two wonderful daughters and all that they bring to my life. Maybe I need to thank God more often for the love and care that my parents provided and still do and the delight my two sisters and their families bring to my life. And I am certain I need to thank God more often for my church family, because, as Paul was alluding too, ministry is a team effort. We cannot impact our community for Christ without each other.
Following Paul’s lead, this month of Thanksgiving, and every month, perhaps I should be incorporating more thanks giving to God every time those who have made such an impact on my life cross my mind, and even when they don’t. This month of Thanksgiving, perhaps we all could make it a practice to thank God for the relation-ships we have in life and how those relationships have helped make us who we are. Even more so, maybe we could tell them how grateful we are for their presence in our lives. May each of you have a blessed Thanksgiving, and I thank God for you being a part of my life.
Grace and peace,
Pastor Russ

Holy Land pilgrimage: Lands of the Bible Cruise.
Pastors Russ and Trudy invite you to join them on a 12-day pilgrimage, October 24 – November 6,
2020, exploring the very places where Christianity began and flourished. We will walk in the land Jesus
called home and step foot in the places Paul traveled on his missionary journeys.
This all-inclusive (round-trip airfare, transfers, cruise, most excursions, fees and taxes) pilgrimage
begins and ends in Rome aboard Royal Caribbean’s Explorer of the Seas as it sails to ports in Greece, Tur-
key, Italy and Israel. While aboard the ship you can take in Broadway style shows and Ice-skating extrava-
ganzas. When docked in port we will visit such places as Bethlehem, the place of Jesus birth; Jerusalem
where Jesus gathered his disciples in the Upper Room, the Garden of Gethsemane where Jesus prayed, Caia-
phas’ house where Jesus faced trial, and the Church of the Holy Sepulcher built over the site of his crucifix-
ion. We’ll also travel to the Sea of Galilee for a boat ride; visit Capernaum where Peter lived; the Mount of
Beatitudes and Tabgha where the feeding of the 5,000 occurred. Plus, we will sail to some of the places Paul
visited on his journeys such as Corinth, Ephesus, Athens and Cyprus.
This pilgrimage to the Holy Land and ancient ports will undoubtedly enrich the way you read and
experience the Bible. So, we invite you to come sail with us on this faith adventure for spiritual renewal and
awakening. We are hosting several informational meetings so you can learn more with several dates and lo-
cations to choose from for your convenience, November 3rd at 4:30 pm at Frist-Faith UMC in Grand Island,

Christmas Cheer
As you know, Christmas will be here before we know it. The deadline for applying for the
Christmas Cheer package is also fast approaching. Families in need of this package are able to
pick up an application at the United Methodist Church in St. Paul 1320 Baxter Street, St. Paul,
NE 68873, the Senior Center, or the Chamber of Commerce office, 619 Howard Avenue, in St.
Paul, NE. The Methodist Church hours are 9:00 am-3:00 pm Tuesday through Friday. To be
considered a recipient, all completed applications must be returned by Friday, November 22,
2019 to the United Methodist Church. If you know of families in need, please make sure they
are aware of this opportunity and deadline. There will be another reminder in the Phonograph
Herald also.
Another way you can help is by donating money to help purchase gifts. If you would like to
make a donation directly, please do so at Citizen’s Bank. Also, during our regular service on
November 17th, the United Methodist Men will have a ‘gift box’ available for your free will do-
nations. Please make checks out to Christmas Cheer. Beginning the first week in December
there will be a Giving Tree in the Fellowship Hall to receive your donations of warm hats and
mittens. Also, there will be gift tags on the tree if you would like to help purchase items for a
child.
Again, if you have any questions, please contact the Snows or Phillips.

*Usher-Greeter Monthly list*
These duties have been assigned to those who have shown interest in volunteering to do these things.
If you would, at any time, be interested in being added to this list, please let Carrie in the office know
and she can add you! You can either be added in the regular monthly calendar as an Usher or Greeter, or
you may choose to be added to the Alternates list. Remember, it is your responsibility to find a replace-
ment from the alternates list if you are unable to help at the times listed below. We truly appreciate all
the hard work that our volunteers are willing to do!
Don’t forget, the clipboards to sign up for Fellowship, Candle lighters and Scripture are still located in the Narthex.
Please continue to volunteer, we need your help. There are opportunities to usher, greet, and light candles as well as
host fellowship. Also pastor could use your help in reading scripture, and if you are musically blessed, we have a sign
up sheet for that too!
There is money available to help purchase food items for fellowship. Please contact the church office.
Note: The United Methodist Men will be ushers and greeters every 3rd Sunday of every
month. On Youth Sundays, the Youth Group will be ushers, greeters, and scripture readers.

United Methodist Church Prayer Chain
The purpose of the prayer chain is to offer special prayers for individuals in critical need. The chain cannot be
activated without the permission of the family in need. Call prayer requests to the church office 754-4247.
The prayer request will be called to the first person on these lists. Each caller then calls the next person on the
list. If that person is unavailable, a call should be placed to the following name and contact made with the first
party later in the day. Last name on list does not call anyone. We are in need of more people joining the
prayer chain. Praying for each other is an important ministry that we can do for our church family. If you
would be interested in becoming part of this mission, please contact the church office.

Administrative Council Meeting
October 15th, 2019
The regular meeting of the Administrative Council was called to order by and led by Joe Swanson starting at
7:05 pm. Pastor Russ began with a prayer. In attendance were Joe Swanson, Pastor Russ Anderson, Ashley
Meyer, Marlene Kremlacek, Theda Van Horn, Becky Schwenk, Abby Fuller, Tom Powell, Mikaleh Esquitin,
and Carrie Hancock.
Pastor: Pastor reported that after a recent District clergy meeting we have received a certificate that we met
100% apportionments of our 2018 mission shares and it appears we are on track for 100% in 2019.
He brought up the insurance that Vincent from Christensen Insurance proposed at our last Ad council meet-
ing. This insurance would begin in March 2020 and would be very comparable to our current insurance with
Church Mutual. Pastor then entertained a motion to change to this insurance starting in March 2020. Tom
Powell made a motion, seconded by Marlene Kremlacek, and all in attendance were in agreement. He men-
tioned that Elaine McClellan’s son, Jeff, would like to make the church a couple of butterfly iron benches in
honor of his mother. Discussion followed as to how this may be utilized here at the church, maybe in some
sort of peace garden in the open grassy area next to the church. We asked if we might be able to see some pic-
tures of what these benches might look like to help us decide as to where these could be set. We were in
agreement that Jeff could start work on the benches. We will get some pictures and look at ideas as to where
to place them again next month.
Worship: Becky had no report. She said the questions that she had on the budget had gotten answered.
Memorial: Marlene and Theda were wanting to step down from being Chairpersons of the Memorial commit-
tee, but still be on the committee. She and Theda will work on replacing themselves as Chairpersons and let
Carrie know of any changes.
SPPRC: No report. Pastor reported that they will need to meet soon.
Trustees: The parsonage walk through that was discussed was done on Sept. 24th. The issue with the church
fridge appears to have been repaired. We are still waiting on a bill that was received from Midwest Restaurant
Supply as it should have been under warranty. Waiting to hear back from the Trustees or Midwest Restaurant
Supply on this.
Treasurer: Tom Powell reported our Operating Checking account is ($8,898), Resources Available $35,590,
Income Giving $8,355, Total Income $11,998, Total Expenditures $10,708, Current Month Gain/(Loss)
$1,290, and Year to date Gain/(Loss) ($7,360). Pastor mentioned that coming up in November we will be
starting the stewardship campaign. Tom went through the 2020 Budget, asking if there were any questions.
Joe entertained a motion to approve the 2020 budget, Tom moved to approve and Theda seconded, all in
agreement. Joe then made a motion to approve the treasurer’s report, all signified in agreement by saying “I”.
Finance: Nothing additional, see above Treasurer’s report.
Education: Ashley reported that having new teachers for Sunday school has been fun. She said that instead of
doing a Christmas program this year with the kids that they are thinking of doing a live nativity during a
Wednesday in December, maybe to correspond this with a Soup Supper. Ashley will work on this with Dave
H./Finance, and perhaps work with the Youth Group also.

fill out this form and that it will also be in our Charge Conference booklets.
Pastor brought up near the end of the meeting that he would like to look into getting someone to come and
watch the children during our meetings. This would allow the parents who are involved in committees to be
able to go to meetings. We will work on this in the future.
