From the Principal…
We are now on the final count down until the Term 3 school holidays!
I want to say that as Principal of Leura PS I have thoroughly enjoyed my very first term with you all.
I feel very lucky to be with you all and I love the community, students and staff. I want to wish you
all a wonderful holiday break. Stay safe and well, and we look forward to seeing students on Monday
October 12th 2020 for the first day back of Term 4.
LEURA ROCKS!
This week our students have been listening to the Monkees. This band always reminded me of the
Beatles in the way they were marketed and the way they sang their songs. The world’s first “Boy
Band” and a band that wasn’t actually a band but a group of actors cast for a TV Series to play a
band, was The Monkees. The Monkees TV show debuted in 1966.
It was a situation comedy about a group of young pop musicians
who are struggling for their first big break into music. The album
created to cash in on the TV show was a success in its own right;
however the odd thing about it was that the music produced on
the album was not played by the “band” the Monkees but rather
by several studio musicians. The success of the TV and the first
album drove the actors; Michael Nesmith, Micky Dolenz, Peter
Tork and Davey Jones, onto careers as real life musicians with
their music careers going beyond the life of the TV series which
lasted from 1966 to 1968.
Next week our students will listen to the Last Train to Clarksville, written by studio writers Tommy
Boyce and Bobby Hart. The song was sung by Micky Dolenz with none of the other Monkees
contributing to the song at all. The producers of the TV show and subsequent albums enlisted some
well-known names from the music industry to create the music. Song writers such as Neil Diamond,
Carol King and Gerry Goffin all contributed to the Monkees’ catalogue of songs. The song which our
students will hear in week 1 of Term 4, is Daydream Believer. This was written by Neil Diamond. We
have heard a few versions of this song in music soundtracks such as Shrek the movie.
COVID-19
Just a reminder that no parents or visitors are to be on school site during the pandemic. We have
noticed a few parents walk into the school during the morning and afternoon when the gates are
open. If you need to speak with a teacher it is important that you ring our front office and make an
appointment. When any visitor or parent enters our school they must sign a COVID form by the
Department of Education. Your help and understanding with this is very much appreciated. We love
seeing our parents and families but during these challenging times we are obligated in keeping our
students, staff and community safe.
HEALTH AND SAFETY
During the morning we have noticed that students are using the staff carpark gate to access the
school. We want to avoid any accidents or injuries to students who are using this gate. As a
response to this ongoing issue, the Main Gate will be open during the mornings so that students can
access the school. Please assist us by talking to your child about using the Main Gate or the Hall
Gate (Gate 3). Our students’ safety and wellbeing is a priority to us.
We also have noticed some students entering the school at a very early time during the mornings.
Our teachers are not on duty until 8:45am or unless they have made themselves available to run
additional programs for students on some mornings. Please utilise FUNKIDS OOSHC if you require
out of school hours care or talk with your child about not arriving before the 8:45am bell so they are
safe.

STAFFING
We have a few teachers who are on leave in the next few weeks. Mrs. Jodie Field will be returning
Week 3, Term 4. During the rest of this term K/1F will have the lovely Mrs Vikki Rhodes. Mrs.
Justine Jinks will be on leave during week 10 of Term 3. During this week we will have Ms. Fran
Pearce taking KJ. Ms. McMahon continues to be on leave and we continue to have the wonderful Ms.
Angela Eves on 3/4M.
SCHOOL PHOTOS 2020
Thank you to our beautiful students, teachers and parents for their cooperation on School Photo
Day. We believe that it was a successful day. On Monday 21st September, we have a backup date
booked for students to take their portrait photo if they missed out on Monday. Also on this day we
have organised with The School Photographer to take some promotional photos of our students and
school environment. Please ensure that if your child is participating in any of these that they are
wearing their full summer uniform.
BUSHFIRE PLAN
During the last few weeks I have been busy collaborating with the RFS, WHS Directorate, and
Director of Educational Leadership – Blue Mountains Network, in reviewing our Bushfire Procedures
for 2020-2021. Updated procedures will soon be found on our school website.
TELL THEM FROM ME SURVEY - PARENTS
In the preparation for the Strategic Direction Plan we are collecting data from our whole community
so that we can establish our three strategic goals and school vision for the next four years. Your
participation and feedback is valuable.
To access the survey use the following link: http://nsw.tellthemfromme.com/68lp
The survey is open until 23rd October (end of Week 2, term 4).
More information about the survey is available at http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au

BUSHFIRE SEASON 2020-2021 Our school has been identified as Category 1, and in a bushfire prone area.
To ensure the health, safety and welfare of students and staff,
the NSW Department of Education has determined that on days
when a Catastrophic Fire Danger Rating is issued for our area
the school will be non-operational (cease to operate).
This means that no staff or students are allowed on site.
A Catastrophic Rating does not mean that there will be a fire but rather
weather conditions could pose a risk for fire.
The rating is a protective measure to ensure our whole community stays safe.
This Catastrophic Rating is only likely to occur on a very small amount of days during
the bushfire season. On these days we ask that our community arranges for adequate supervision
of their children in case of a fire threat and needing to evacuate the Blue Mountains.
The school will be notified of a Catastrophic Fire Rating on the day before
the forecast at 4.30pm. Please keep an eye out on Skoolbag and the school Facebook page
for any updates. Please don’t hesitate to contact the school
if you would like further information.

DEBATING NEWS Primary students will now start each day with a 30 minute exercise class,
according to our affirmative team who robustly battled our negative team, to
convince the adjudicator that all students would benefit from starting each day
with 30 minutes of exercise. After listening to
convincing arguments, current evidence, smashing rebuttals,
and 4-5 minute speeches, the adjudicator agreed with the
affirmative. Well done to both teams for an entertaining
and persuasive debate.
The next debate will see Leura Public School oppose
Hazelbrook Public School. GO LEURA!
