We have the date--May 13—and now we need to assemble volunteers to help with all sorts of jobs for some portion of the event that runs from 9:00am-1:00pm. We set up kiosks early in the morning at the Playfield while others distribute balloons and crepe paper at Al Larkins Park. During Playfield events, we need help organizing riders for ponies; selling baked goods, hot dogs, water; helping keep order at the bouncy house; and so on. Then at the end volunteers clean up, break down kiosks, and enjoy the warm glow of their accomplishments. I am hoping you can help the Madrona Council again put on a great Mayfair event. football practice, like positive male role models. The owners of Parnell’s. We’ve been going there for so long. Places we’ve been going for years and years, we know everyone there so just everyone who has ever worked at Red Apple over the years, the Flowers 4 U shop, I got my prom corsage there, because she’s known me since I was a kid. I feel like, without that, I honestly don’t know where I would be. Those people were so influential in my life.

When I was younger, me and my parents and I think my grandma, my uncle, and then a few of my cousins lived right in the Central District, and Sunday dinner has always been a part of our family. It’s one of those things. And we did that all of the time. Big dinner. Grandma comes over, uncles, cousins. We lived multiple places around the neighborhood, so I can tell you like six different houses that we all had that in. I could see my cousins whenever I wanted to. They would come over all the time, and we would just hang out. I guess a lot of my extended family moved further south as house prices and stuff started to go up, but as far as all my cousins and stuff like that, it’s so hard to see them now because they live so far, and it’s crazy because we all used to live in this little microcosm here. Now everyone’s just spread out, and it’s just kind of like the central district was disbanded, if you will, in a way. And that feeling was kind of sad.

For additional information about Shelf Life, consult shelflifestories.com or telephone 866-6488 to schedule a time to tell your story of the Central District.

Sky Sawyer (from page one) What to DO: Information and Resources By Teri Akin, 36th Ave.Following the energizing march on Jan. 21, I decided to put together a list to help people take action in the months ahead. The resources below are just a small slice of what is out there, and it will be changing every day. But it is enough to get started.

Michael Moore’s “The First 100 days Resistance” campaign (or 600 days) suggests doing something every day Go on the website each day to find out what it is at http://www.100daysofresistance.org/ Watch Michael Moore for details at www.democracynow.org/2017/1/20/michael_moore_nao-mi_klein_on_resisting Moore says: call your Congressional representatives at 202-225-3121. This number is open 24 hours a day with a live human, to connect with any legislator, all you need is your zip code.

Here is what Robert Reich has to say about “The First 100 days Resistance Agenda.” Note it was written Nov. 19, 2016. http://robertreich.org/post/153401540180

MoveOn seems to be collaborating with Indivisible & Work-ing Families. On Jan.22 they hosted a 1.5 hour “emergency training call.”I listened on line with 60,000 others and it was quite valuable. They would like us to form small groups and actually go to legislators offices every Tuesday. There were very specific guidelines to follow including video taping everything. Here is a link to the archived call and slides. https://act.moveon.org/survey/indivisible

Rachel Maddow has been promoting Indivisible. Google “Rachel Maddow Indivisible” to see her other past clips about their success.

There is an Indivisible guide at https://www.indivisibleguide.com/web/. The authors of this guide are former congressio-nal staffers who witnessed the rise of the Tea Party. They saw these activists take on a popular president with a mandate for change and a supermajority in Congress. To this end, the guide offers a step-by-step guide for individuals, groups, and organizations looking to replicate the Tea Party’s success in getting Congress to listen to a small, vocal, dedicated group of constituents. They want us to form small nimble neigh-borhood groups. They will post existing groups on their website. Or we can start our own. So far Madrona doesn’t have one. There also is an “Indivisible Action Calendar” which details what to do on each day, to coordinate for the maxi-mum impact.

Madrona Dining & Sipping Society By Audrey Seale, 36th Ave.The Madrona Dining & Sipping Society joined for a fortify-ing burger night at the Feed Co. Burgers on 24th and Union on Jan.19. The appetizers were delicious, the burgers generous and divine, and drinks were on special for MDSS. How could we go wrong? And in case you missed our night and plan to visit Feed Co on your own, it’s a short walk to burn off calories, an easy bus ride, or they do have a park-ing lot across the street. What a bonus in this area!

Our future plans are announced via the MDSS email list so if you would like to receive an e-vite to upcoming events, please join the email list by contacting me at [email protected]. When plans are announced, just click yes or no to become part of the plan. We ask that if your plans change, you do change your reservations. We arrange for the restaurants to do “special pricing” for us and they count on the RSVPs we give them. I’m trying to avoid asking for prepays.

We are in talks with these restaurants for upcoming events: Monsoon, Naam, Meet the Moon. And I love hearing suggestions for you. You can even take the lead in asking a restaurant you like about having the MDSS group plan a dinner. Just contact me at the email above so we can final-ize plans you initiate.

Letter to the Editor By Nancy Josephson, Grand Ave.Compliments to the authors of ‘Shelf Life with Phyllis Yasutake’, Feb. 2017!

When we moved to Madrona on Feb. 14, 2004, we sent our daughters to Montlake, Washington, and Garfield. From them we learned about CORE and that it gave them some of the richest educational experiences they had. We swim at the Medgar Evers pool, the local Y. The history about these and other local places that Phyllis shared, and about her Uncle Walter, was given in a conversational way like people used to do. I photographed the article, posted it to my Facebook, and immediately received several likes--some from people who don’t even live in Seattle. There’s a fresh and real power that Shelf Life is onto. They deserve support, and I want to read more from them.Thank you Madrona News!

This is my Oath thisismyoath.com Seattle Times, Nicole Brodeur’s column on Jan. 24. If you scroll down to Step 2 there is a lot of information on each of 12 issues (Systemic Racism, Reproductive Rights, People with Disabilities …..etc.) For each one there is whole page of resources. Introduction and sections for Educate, Donate, Participate and Communi-cate. There is a Step 3, which is “Getting out of your Bubble,” with pages for each.

Neighborhood School NewsMadrona PK-8 NewsBig changes are coming to our school! Beginning next school year, Madrona will be K-5, and no longer have a middle school. With Meany Middle School reopening in the 2017-18 school year, Madrona will be able to focus on its elementary program which has seen increased enrollment in the last few years. We'll miss our middle schoolers and staff very much but we're also excited for this new chapter.

Our Girl Scouts have been working hard, learning what it takes to run a business by selling cookies to their family, friends, and neighbors. It's almost time for booth sales and we want you all to know where to expect to see Madrona Girl Scouts in the neighborhood in March.

This is a great way to for the community to connect with our students and share in the love of science! If you're interested, email Lily St Leger at [email protected] Annual Ask--The Madrona PTSA is working hard fundraising to support students and teachers. Our Annual Ask if especially important this year because the Seattle School District budget shortfall is $74 million for next year. Please con-tact Megan Hochstatter at [email protected]

Playground ProjectOur work on the Madrona K-8 playground continues. Johnson + Southerland, our design firm, has produced some initial designs that we presented to the community on Feb. 28 at Madrona’s Math Night. The Playground Steering Committee is pursuing a number of additional grant opportunities. We will also seek private donations in the coming months. Most of all, we want your input. Please look at our Facebook page- Open Madrona- to see our latest designs or email Sharon at [email protected].

Neighbor Appreciation Awards 2017

On Feb. 11, the Madrona Community Council gathered neighbors from Madrona PK-8 School and the surrounding community to honor neighbors who’ve made extraordinary contributions to the quality of Madrona life.

Tyrone Love Unsung Hero AwardLuel and his wife Selam Mengistu live in Renton with their two children, commuting daily to Madrona to open the Madrona Deli. Luel learned to drive at age 11, running parts for an auto-repair business in the Ethiopian city of Gonder. He emigrated to the US for op-portunity, becoming a US citizen in 2005. And despite a rough beginning with a mixup over immigration paperwork that almost saw him deported, Luel has been a hard worker and a big booster to the US. He and his wife Selam keep the Madrona Deli store open seven days a week—even during snow storms and during the infamous Hanukkah Eve windstorm in 2006 that knocked out Madrona power for five days. According to a column about Luel and Selam that Danny Westneat wrote, Danny remembered Luel propping open his front door during those chill Dec. days to keep his produce and milk cool; cus-tomers shopped by flashlight. Westneat noted that Luel said about the US: “If you want to work, you can work. It’s still [the] only country you can be whatever you want to be,” he says. “Look at Barack Obama. Look at me.” Westneat asked Luel how to succeed in the US, and he replied: “Dream. Have a plan. Be decent person.

Madrona Resident for Life AwardThe recipient of this award is Mr. Burke Gibson. He grew up in Madrona where his father acquired a number of properties at the intersection of 34th and Union in the early 1920s. Mr. Gibson and his father originally operated the drugstore where the Madrona Ale house is now located. In acknowledging this award, Mr. Gibson said he attended Madrona Elementary School, Garfield, and the UW. The family still owns property formerly occupied by Amara. While they intend to develop it at some future point, they expect to work with neighbors to find just the right mix for their interests and those of Madrona neighbors to enhance the desirability of the neighborhood .

Madrona Good Neighbor AwardEpiphany Episcopal Parish received this award for 2017. In ac-cepting the award, Rector Doyt Conn shared the congregation’s thanks, joking that the parish has been in Madrona for 110 years so the award has been a long time coming. This award went to the Parish to acknowledge many activities that posi-tively affect Madrona and the Seattle community.

The church welcomes any and all to regular services on Sunday and special events throughout the week. Every Wednesday and Friday mornings, neighbors are invited to join in guided meditation in the newly renovated chapel. They invite the com-munity to enjoy wonderful music through the offerings of the recently established Music Guild. Neighbors are encouraged to enjoy Friday evening outdoor concerts in July. Additionally, the parish sponsors many families through the YMCA and provides food and gifts at Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter...even Halloween. They provide fully-outfitted backpacks as needy local kids start back to school each fall; harvest vegetables in the front garden to help those in need; and every Friday night host Operation Nightwatch to ensure eight men have a safe, warm, and comfortable place to sleep. Members of the parish clean YMCA apartments to ready them for new families, help staff the Baby Boutique at Wellspring, and support the weekly Teen Feed program.

Nora AwardThe Nora Award, named in honor of Madrona activist Nora Wood, is given to a Madrona resident who, in ways both large and small, has left a personal mark on the community. Stacey Kryman received this award in 2017 to acknowledge the many ways she has benefitted the community and been a great liai-son between the MCC, Madrona PK-8 School, and the broader community. Over many years she has em-ployed her creative energies to organize and expand on events like Mayfair, the fund raising wine tasting, the Halloween celebration, and Aug. concerts in the park. She initiated the painting and refurbishing of the Shelterhouse, which along with a Seattle Parks-added interior bathroom, makes it an even more welcoming place to host celebrations and events year-round, and she helped produce the MCC booklet, Building Community and Bringing Peace to Madrona, in response to violence in our community. Stacey is inclusive and enthusiastic and has consistently given her time and creativity to support the vibrancy of Madrona.

Local Hero AwardMike Walker has owned the Hi-Spot for nearly 25 years, the longest-serving restaurant in Madrona. He was nominated for this award

by several community members who note he is a “generous and thoughtful host and employer. He has made the Hi-Spot a gathering place for David Brewster’s weekly breakfast crowd of peo-ple interested in politics over many years. He contributes generously to the monthly ‘Homeless Cooking’ needs for which St. Cloud’s is better known and to many other community projects. He helps his customers with apartment-hunting or other problems”. Another person who nomi-nated Mike for this award wrote: “The Hi-Spot puts Madrona ‘on the map’ for many of us living in and out of Madrona. The cafe and staff exemplify the sense of community and Mike creates that community through his friendliness, thoughtfulness, and good cheer.”

Madrona PK-8 Neighbor Award WinnersOn Feb. 11, Madrona PK-8 joined the MCC to honor members of the school community whose contributions enhance the school and the surrounding community. Vice Principal Bruno Cross, teachers Ms. Adams and Mr. Gillis, and PTSA co-presidents Kristina Washburn and Sharon Safarik made the following presentations:

The Go Panthers Award went to Tom Niccoli and Ayana Nevers. Miss Ayana’s award was moved to the front of the agenda so she and the Panthers basketball team she coaches could get on to their scheduled Saturday game.

The Kaaren Andrews and Mary Bass Award went to Leslie Beaver for her many contributions over the years and particularly for her great work on Multicultural Night in recent years.

The Madrona Pre-K8 Student Awards went to K-2: Zia McGuane, Grades 3-5: Deanna Ross and Grades 6-8: Maxine Embry

The Doris Baptist Hickman Staff award went to Jon Hughes and Julie Olsen. We were honored to have Ms. Baptist Hickman join us for the award ceremony this year.

So Says Big Leaf Maple (Acer macrophyllum)Judith Starbuck, Grand Ave

With my autumn pigments I paint the canopy gold. Then with drifting drips as big as dinner platesI relinquish the glow to the forest floor.

After I let go of the last leaves, I exchange my brush for char-coal to sketch bare branches on the winter sky.

As my discards wither to sensuous curlicues, the understory takes on brown in many hues.

The snowberries and hazelnuts seem to have been waitingwith outstretched branches to catch my season-changing offerings —cradling replacements for their missing summer greens.

In response to the stirrings of spring, I splatter fragrant yel-low clusters that linger on the branches before dropping to the ground.

Then I set thousands of green-to-brown seeds twirlingdownward, some to root in soil made fertile by ancestral compost and push up hopeful seedlings, only a few to survive, shouldering out the rest for space in the diverse woodsy nursery.

With the small curls of new leaves, spring-bright, I givethe canopy a chartreuse watercolor wash.

Now these sun-chemists unfurl and bulk up on the sap of summer until they once again testify to my name,

ready to wrap camas roots for storingas native women did long before wax paper.

With their full intensity they bathe the new-leafed snowber-ries and hazelnuts 80 feet below in filtered green, setting up the summer version of canopy color reflected on the forest floor.

Join Me at Julia’s PlaceBy Kirsten Verlander, 34th Ave.

I recently began volunteering at Julia’s Place, located in the lower level of the Madrona Grace Presbyterian Church at 832 32nd Ave. Julia’s Place is an emergency family shelter that provides a safe place to stay for up to six homeless families with children --families who would otherwise be sleeping in cars, on buses, under bridges, or separated from one anoth-er when dispersed to different shelters.

The Julia’s Place shelter is run by Mary’s Place  (www.marysplaceseattle.org) an organization providing day and night shelter for homeless women, children, and fami-lies. Madrona Grace Church opens up their lower level each evening to house families and provide kitchen, shower, playroom, dining, and laundry facilities as well as a common gathering place for residents.

Evening volunteer shifts from 6:00-8:00pm include helping children with schoolwork, playing board games, or just chat-ting with the parents. During my last shift, an eight-year-old boy from Ethiopia showed me his advanced multiplication skills – asking me to deliver increasingly difficult problems for him to solve. Afterwards, he taught me how to draw owls using geometric shapes he learned in school. There are many opportunities like this to volunteer and spend time with the families at Julia’s Place.

There will be a special volunteer orientation session at Madrona Grace on March 23 from 5:30-7:30pm. To register to attend the Madrona volunteer session, please e-mail [email protected]. For more information about Julia’s Place and to learn how to provide financial support, please visit www. Juliaplace.org.
