This month’s meeting Sunday, May 15, 2011@1:30 pm Tom Brown Arena, 141 Bayview, Ottawa Topic: “Back to Basics” with members of the Ottawa Orchid Society & General Meeting - Election of New Executive This month’s presentation is all about “Back to Basics”. We have asked some of our members to lead small, hands-on workshops. Jean Hollebone will share her experiences with putting orchids out for the summer so they too can enjoy some summer sun and warmth. Julie Mertens will organize a repotting table, with potting materials and some pots, so bring a healthy, bug-free plant or two and repot it, with some assistance if needed. This is after all the best time to repot, with spring bringing on new growth in many plants, and it is always recommended to repot new plants, such as those that may have been purchased at the show. We are lining up other workshops which will be of interest to many. Hope you can make it to this meeting where you are sure to learn some tips and secrets that will help you with your orchid growing and get greater enjoyment from your plants. The May meeting will also be a General Meeting at which time we will be electing a new Executive. This is also the last monthly meeting before we take a break for the summer months. NOTE: There will be no Orchids 201 this month. Don’t forget to bring your blooming orchids to our monthly show table. The Ottawa Orchid Society meets every third Sunday of every month from September to May inclusive at 1:30 P.M. at the Tom Brown Arena, 141 Bayview, Ottawa. A NOTE FROM THE PRESIDENT (AND EDITOR)It’s hard to believe that our annual show was only 3 weeks ago. It seems like it was so long ago. Our show was a great success. There was no issue with parking this year and our attendance zoomed up to some 1,900 visitors from the 1,500 visitors we hadlast year. This marked increase in attendance along with the revenue from the sale tables to vendors, the Members’ Sale Table, and money raised from raffle tickets resulted in a profit for the Society. If you have show expenses to be paid, please submitthese bills to Sylvie Girard, our society/show treasurer, at this month’s meeting. If you are unable to come to the May meeting, please contact Sylvie Girard by e-mail or phone to tell her what bills remain to be paid. Once Sylvie has all the bills, she will tellus how much we actually cleared.

A great big thank you to our organizers, volunteers, exhibitors, and vendors. We had a wonderful show! We would not have hadthe success we had without everyone’s participation. Thank you, one and all!

The results of all the ribbon and award winners are now posted on the Society’s web site ( www.ottawaorchidsociety.com ). Toget to the page with all the award and ribbon results, go to http://www.ottawaorchidsociety.com/awards2011.html or click the linkfor “Shows”, then click the link reading “OOS Show Awards” and then click “Show Awards2011”. If you won a ribbon or award, please check our record listing as a number of plantnames have been either updated due to changes made in orchid nomenclature or neededcorrecting. Thank you, Joyce Medcalf, for checking all the plant names. Arlene Lang, ourSociety photographer, took hundreds of pictures of the individual orchids and exhibits and isbusy working along with Joyce and Dave Cooper, our web master, to get photographs putup on our web site against all the individual ribbon and award winners. This is a lot of work.Every effort is being made to get things up on the web as quickly as this can be done. In theinterim, we do have some pictures in this newsletter on the show. On the right is the orchidthat was selected as the Best in Show. It is Rhyncholaeliocattleya Ports of Paradise (Blc.Fortune x B. digbyana) and grown by Wilson Ng of Scarborough, Ontario. To give you anidea of the size of the blooms, we have Joe Hruska standing behind the plant. Joe is a bigman and these orchid blooms are spectacular and scented. Wilson had a personal exhibit atour show but this plant was in the Crystal Star Orchid exhibit where it was surrounded bymany other beautiful orchids, some belonging to Wilson and many others belonging to Ericand Ellen Lee of Crystal Star Orchids. Further on in the newsletter we have some morepictures of this beautiful orchid and some comments from Wilson on how he grew thisorchid and got this beautiful and pleasing presentation. Great work, Wilson!

On the left is a photo of the OttawaOrchid Society (OOS) exhibit, a creation by Marie Gauthier. Marie, is arelatively new member and this is her first time at exhibiting. Marie teamed upwith Jean Hollebone and our duo, along with a number of other OOSvolunteers, put this beautiful creation together. The props, including thefountain, were loaned to us by Ritchie Feed & Seed Inc. in Gloucester. Theorchids belong to different members in our Society. Great work, ladies, and abig hand to our novice artist and set designer, Marie Gauthier!Notwithstanding the work involved erecting this society display, Marie had apersonal display of her own in the 1-5 plant category.

Action has already started on next year’s annual show. Michael Barker hasbooked the Nepean Sportsplex Curling Rink for our 31

stAnnual Show and

Sale which will be held on Saturday and Sunday, April 21st

- 22nd

, 2012.

Every two years, our May meeting serves as a general meeting to elect a new Society Executive consisting of four members:President; Vice-President; Treasurer; and Secretary. These positions shall be filled by a vote of the general Society membership. As I have been Society President for two consecutive 2-year terms, our Society constitution requires that I step down and a newPresident be elected. Julie Mertens has been nominated to run for Society President. Gerry Duffield has served on the Board for4 years as Vice President and is stepping down to enjoy membership as a regular member. Jean Hollebone has been nominatedto run for Vice President. Janet Johns, the current incumbent in the position of Secretary has been nominated for Secretary andhas agreed to remain in this position if elected by the general membership. Sylvie Girard (current incumbent Treasurer) has beennominated for Treasurer. If anyone wishes other candidates to be considered, you may submit a formal nomination for anyelected position to the Nomination Committee headed by Anna Bilsky. The nominee must be a member of the Society in goodstanding, agree to stand as a candidate, and the nomination must be supported by at least three Society members in goodstanding. Nominations shall be received no later than the closing time announced by the President at the General Meeting atwhich the election takes place. We hope we get a good turnout of members to hold this election.

On another note, we are pleased to announce that Jean Hollebone has been recently confirmed as a Trustee of the AmericanOrchid Society. Congratulations, Jean, and the best of luck in discharging your responsibilities. This is our last meeting before webreak for the summer months. We hope to have some good workshops, some treats, and a surprise raffle for everyone whohelped out at the show. Hope to see you this Sunday!

April meeting activitiesOur meetings are what they are because of the many interesting and wonderful members in the society. Without theirinvolvement, support and enthusiasm, our meetings would not be what they are. So, in a snapshot, we would like to introduce toyou the following members:

Above from left: (Photo #1) Emerson Harkin, our Society librarian; Theresa Lafleur and her Mother, Terez Paksi, who both bringmany beautifully grown blooming orchids to our monthly show table; Ian Philips, a great vanda grower; Glen Hansen in the brownsweater and glasses who looks after our hospitality nook every month, and his protégé, Marcel Carrière (blue sweater andglasses) who makes great coffee when Glen cannot attend a meeting and has a great smile for everyone. (Photo #2) In thispicture we have Margaret Haydon, our AOS rep and great grower of paphs. and phrags; George Cook, a great lycaste grower;Joe Hruska, our expert cymbidium grower; and, Joyce Medcalf who grows a lot of neat, cool growing species and hybrids and alot of other orchids and judges our monthly show table every month. (Photo #3) On the far right is Manfred Hey, in his favouritegardening jacket, holding his Rhyncattleanthe Shinfong Dawn. Manfred resides in Pointe Claire, is a very active member in theEastern Canada Orchid Society (ECOS), and enjoyed our Society so much that he became an OOS member and comesregularly to our meetings. He always finds interesting orchids in his personal collection to bring to our show table. He is anenthusiastic member and a great addition to our Society.

Above from left: (Photo #1) Here is a picture of John Gaskill holding a beautiful blooming Phalaenopsis he just won from our raffletable at the April meeting. Next to John is Janet Sutherland who looks after our raffle at monthly meetings. If you want to buy araffle ticket, see Janet. (Photo #2) Next to John Gaskill is Stephanie and Roy John. John has recently undertaken with help fromother people both in the OOS and the Ottawa Field Naturalists Club to create a guide to be put on our Society web site of all thelocal wild orchid species. (Photo #3) Michael Barker who looks after our annual show set up is with Angèle Biljan of AngelOrchids. Angèle is an avid orchid grower, brings lots of blooming orchids to every monthly show table to everyone’s enjoyment, and is a part-time orchid vendor and a great source for orchids and orchid growing supplies. Margaret Haydon, Elizabeth Kaminska, Joyce Medcalf and Rick Sobkowicz (who took this photo and some of the others inthis grouping) listened to what Arlene had to share with us. Rick found Arlene’s mini lecture and show-and-tell just great and afterthe meeting bought with confidence a super little digital camera which he is enjoying tremendously. Rick remarked that he foundthe choices of cameras in stores overwhelming and would not have bought anything until he heard what Arlene had to say andrecommended. Thanks a lot, Arlene! On the left is the award winning exhibit erected by the members of La Société desorchidophiles de Montréal. It is a stunning exhibit with many exceptional and well grownplants. Photo taken by Rick Sobkowicz.

Below, photo taken by Rick Sobkowicz, is The Best Plant in Show, RhyncholaeliocattleyPorts of Paradise (Blc. Fortune x B. digbyana), grown by Wilson Ng of Scarborough,Ontario. (Editor’s note: It was previously called Blc. Ports of Paradise (Blc. Fortune x B.digbyana)). This orchid was in the Crystal Star Orchid exhibit. Rick contacted Wilson andasked Wilson to provide a short write up for publication in Spike of how he came to hissuccess with this plant. Here is what Wilson wrote by way of an explanation. Rick wouldlike to add that he pestered Wilson to include a photo of himself (photo on right below) sothat we can see what this grower looks like. Wilson grows many different and exceptionalplants and at a recent orchid show in Toronto, he won numerous awards and honours forhis plants. Congratulations, Wilson, on your great success!

“I am really excited that my cattleya has won the “Best in Show” for the firsttime in the Ottawa Orchid Show. I started my orchid growing hobby 20 yearsago before I moved to Canada in 1991. At the beginning, phalaenopsis andcattleya were my favourite orchids but I still grow a bit of some other genera. My emphasis has shifted a bit more to cattleyas in the last 5 years because Ifeel that cattleyas are really showy and elegant. This plant, Blc. Ports ofParadise, is a pretty oldclone. It has a very nicebright green color and avery pleasant fragrance. One of its clones hasreceived a FCC from theAmerican Orchid Society

a while ago. I grow my cattleya with coconut chips mixed with a bit ofmoss. All my cattleyas stay outdoors from around May to late October andthen they are moved indoors for the rest of the year. I fertilize them heavilyin the summer. I have built a wooden structure on my 20 ft. flower bed inmy backyard and all my cattleyas are hanging except the really big andheavy ones which sit close to ground level. I grow my cattleyas with about30% shade in the summer to prevent sun burn. On the far right is a pictureof our fantastic orchid grower, Wilson Ng. Thank you, Wilson for providing this picture.

9

Two weeks before the show, my Blc. Ports of Paradise cattleya only had about 5 flowers open and I knew it wouldn’t have allthe flower buds open unless we had some warm days. Unfortunately, the temperatures were around 10C during the day whichwould not be enough to facilitate the flowers to open within the next 2 weeks. I decided to turn my heat on to around 25C duringday time, and the night time temperature dropped down to around 20C. In 2 weeks time, 4 more flowers opened to produce thefantastic array of flowers I have now. Since all the flower spikes are more or less at the same height, the orchid was staked forthe blooms to form a circle. The finished look is really fresh and elegant and I am very happy with it. I think the culture of anorchid is a very important element to having a nice orchid in the show. However, the timing and presentation of the plant is alsoan important factor to make your plant look its best.

The Hans Bode Award was won by Margaret Haydon for her Paph. esquirolei. This is an exceptional clone that has caught theeye of many paph. growers who have sought to get a division of this plant from Margaret. Congratulations, Margaret. She is

shown below standingnext to the SocietyPresident, RickSobkowicz, with alovely exhibit behindthem belonging to JanSmid (J.S. Orchids) ofWhitby, Ontario.Margaret purchasedthis paph. in a flaskmany years ago fromChanthorn Orchids inBritish Columbia.

The Wayne Eyles Memorial Trophy is generously donated by Wayne's wife Stella in memory of Wayne Eyles, a long timemember of the Ottawa Orchid Society and an active participant in many of our Shows. This award is one of three that Stella hadspecially made by Cairn Cunnane and is to be awarded to the best amateur display (Class 1, 1-5 orchids) by an individual orfamily. This award is only open to growers who do not sell plants under a business name, but is not restricted to members of theOttawa Orchid Society. This year, the first for this special award, the Wayne Eyles Memorial Award was won by MarcelCarrière. We were absolutely delighted to have Wayne and Stella’s son, Jason Eyles, on hand to present this award to Marcel.Jason was a long time exhibitor at our annual shows and competed for many years against Marcel and numerous other membersof our Society for the Best Exhibit in this category (1-5 plants). Marcel was absolutely delighted to win this beautiful award andhonour and was grateful that he did not have to compete against Jason.

Thank you, Stella, for yourgenerosity and keepingWayne’s memory in theforefront of our minds andheart. And thank you,Jason, for coming to Ottawaand renewing old ties withyour numerous, old friends. It was great seeing you.
