Welcome to the all-new BullytinDear Bully friendsThis is the first edition of the revamped SABTC Bullytin, sporting new clothes and with a fresh approach. It is on the one hand the SABTC’s response to many requests and on the other hand a new service to its members and the Bully community at large.

In the recent past the SABTC has communi-cated with its members primarily via its website and yearbook. The web-site and yearbook are of a formal nature and not ideal media for regular reporting on club mat-ters, the social scene and Bully matters in gen-eral.

The new Bullytin will be published alternate- monthly, circulated via e-mail and will eventually also appear on the SABTC’s website. By the way … the website is in the process of being comprehensively redeveloped and signifi-cantly improved.

The Bullytin’s size will depend on the volume and availability of useful and relevant material. News gathering will be

primarily done by the editor, Pieter Wilken, with the help of the SABTC Committee, but everyone is most welcome to submit mate-rial, including photographs and interesting snippets, for consideration for publication. But … the editorial committee has the final say on what goes in and what doesn’t.

The aim is to report on the doings of people and their dogs and happenings around the show ring, with an informal slant and a personal touch. We will also publish show schedules, technical articles and factual material of interest to the Bully fraternity.

Paid for commercial adver-tising will be allowed to offset costs. We are allowing Bully breeders to advertise dogs and puppies, provided they are paid-up members of the club.

The annual Major Trophy Show held at the beginning of February was a resounding success. Accolades must go the MTS Organising Committee, the SABTC Committee and the event spon-sor, Emerald Gold.

Enjoy!

2013 supreme Bull terrier and Bitch of the Year, and Dog of the Year now Champions

The Supreme Bull Terrier and Bitch of the year for 2013, Stonore I Marilyn, and the Dog of the year for 2013, Domino Devil, have both now become champions.

Stonore I Marilyn became cham-pion on Sunday, 23 March 2014 at the Witwatersrand Kennel Club Championship Show and Domino Devil at the Gauteng Junior Ken-nel Club Championship Show on Sunday, 30 March 2014.

Ch I Marilyn, bred and owned by Deon Maritz, has Ipon Zin Zan of Carradice as sire and Stonore Lara Banks as dam. Ch Domino Devil, bred by Jacques Steen-kamp and owned by Abel Jansen, is by Bilmaro Bisto and out of Rostel Lady Marks.

In 2005 I was forced to re-think my strategy of breeding a Bull Terrier of quality. I had one hand me down bitch with a pedigree that was rather “open”. I identified three stud dogs, chosen for their virtues and started putting them together.

One of the three was exported and through the efforts of Wynand Lourens and Marco van den Doel I was able

to complete the trio into one pedigree.

The mating between Ipon Zinzan of Carradice and Stonore Lara Banks took place and four pups were born on 1 November 2011. My choice fell on Stonore Hallipurr. Unfortunately she died in a freak accident at 9 weeks leaving me feeling desolate. A repeat mating was done and a litter of ten pups was born.

Another freak accident took my choice at 7 weeks!Marco van den Doel, who liked Marilyn, suggested that

we go and see her — and there the fairy tale started. We both liked what we saw at 6 months.

Winning the Supreme Title was very overwhelming to me given the road traveled. Tears of joy were hard to keep at bay but what a feeling. The text to my wife Jacky was very cryptic but it said it all — “Supreme”.

To all the Helpers, Show organizers and Judges a big big thank you.

A supreme in the Making “ twenty six years waiting and now it’s finally happened!”

This is how breeder and owner, Deon Maritz, describes his journey to 1 February 2014 — the day Stonore I Marilyn became the 2013 Supreme Bull Terrier of Southern Africa.

First choice, Stonore Hallipurr

Above right: Domino Devil, SA Dog of the Year and Best Coloured Bull Terrier for 2013, became a South African Champion in March this year under Terrier Judge, Mr Rion van der Linde. Well done to owner Abel Jansen (Bulljan) who worked very hard with Zin over the past months to ensure that he is kept in tip top show condition.

BULLyTIN, MAy-JUNE 2014 3

Abel Jansen, the owner of Ch Domino Devil, on his dog’s achievements: “All my life I have had a passion for animals, more specifically dogs. It all started about 3 years ago when I got my first two pet Bull Terriers and I instantly fell in love with the Bull Terrier breed — their personalities, protective-ness, playful natures and the list just goes on.

“During a break-in at my house, they were stolen. It was devastating for me and I just felt empty. This is when Domino Devil came into my life. I bought him from a breeder friend — Jacques Steenkamp — about two and a half years ago. At that stage Domino Devil was only a pet, but one day someone told me that he has all the qualities of a show dog and that I should enter him in a dog show.

“Domino Devil has gone on to earn many awards. At the 2012 MTS he was Best Dog Over Two years, and the following year he won Best in Show at the Transvaal Ken-nel Club Championship Show where he competed against 800 dogs of all breeds. At the MTS of 2013 he received his most prestigious award: Dog of the year.

“In the few months since then Domino Devil has achieved champion status. I was ecstatic and so proud, it is hard to find words to describe it.

“The future is looking promising as I’m in the process of registering my very own kennel — Bulljan Bull Terriers — and Domino Devil will soon be known as “Champion Domino Devil of Bulljan.”

Bull terrier becomes a comic book heroMost readers who trawl internet sites looking for news items about Bull Terriers will be confronted by article after article focusing on dog attacks. But now there’s something new out there: Tugg the Hero Bull Terrier.

Wrapped in a blanket, staked down beside a busy Texas highway and left for dead … That’s how real-life

Tugg got his start. The police officer who was first at the scene said he could not believe what he saw — a small, male, Bull Terrier puppy, about four months old, which ap-peared to have been badly burned.

Fortunately Tugg had not been burned: he had an extremely se-vere case of demodectic mange — along with a host of other infections and ailments, both internal and ex-ternal.

His rescuers have made him an animal rescue and welfare activist, and the hero of a comic series. In it Su-per-hero Tugg saves the world from things we didn’t even know were dangerous.

100% of the proceeds from the sale of this comic go to rescue animals in need, through the not for profit organisa-tion, Tugg’s Pink House of Wuff, Inc.

Wynand Lourens became the 17th recipient of the cov-eted Kingstonia Award, which is “for the recognition of an individual who has made a significant or historical or lifetime contribution towards the breed” at the 2013 MTS held on 1 February 2014.
