Principal’s Messages

Only 4 weeks left of term and sooo many exciting events to enjoy. Students and staff are feeling the pinch of the busy part of term as well as the heat! I ask families and students to work together with staff to support their children through the next four weeks, so we can all end the year on a happy note!

Morcombe visit

What an honour it was to meet Bruce and Denise on Monday. I feel as a school we were privileged to hear firsthand their passion for Child Safety and witness the product of their hard work and determination. It was a long presentation with a lot of talking and our younger students did very well to stay focussed and listening. Bruce even commented (on the news as well) about how respectful and engaged the students were.

Dance

Dance lessons continued this week with the Mayhem Dance Crew taking our en-ergetic students through some hip and happening hip hop moves. I joined in with the year 6 Dance this week and wow I was impressed with their moves. Each year level is doing an amazing job with their dances and I can’t wait for them to show off their grooves at the presentation night in Week 9 this term. Parents and carers are asked to please pay the $10 per student for Dance by the last lesson in Wk 9.

END OF YEAR EVENTS

Graduation

This year our Year 6 Graduation Ceremony will be held during the day at 9.30am on Wednesday 4th December in the New Hall. We look forward to celebrating the end of primary schooling for our Year 6 students and families are invited to help us celebrate.

Leaders Parade

The 2020 Year 6 school leaders will be announced at a special leadership parade on Tuesday 3rd December at 2.30pm in the new hall.

Presentation Night

The presentation night will be held on Thursday 5th December on the oval next to the Library, starting at 4.30pm.

This year there will be four awards per class:

A Reading Award: The student in each class who has made the best reading progress for 2019

English high achiever award: The student in each class who has achieved the best English results in class for 2019

Mathematics high achiever award: The student in each class who has achieved the best Mathematics results in class for 2019

A Harristown Hero award: The student in each class who has excelled at displaying the Harristown Hero values

Following the awards, each year level with perform their dance!

Transition days

On Tuesday 10th December, the Year 6 students enrolled at HSHS next year, will attend an orientation day. All oth-er year levels will be involved in an in-school transition where students will get to meet their new teachers, class-mates and see their 2020 classrooms.

ENROLMENTS

ENROL NOW for 2020! It is important that families complete the enrolment paperwork and return to the office ASAP in preparation for next year. We currently have 38 Prep students enrolled and expect this number to increase to around 60 by the beginning of the year. The Prep enrolment interviews run by Mrs B, are a very important part of your child’s transition to school. The information gained through these conversations allows the teacher to best place your child and support them when starting here in Prep.

If your child is currently at a kindy or childcare centre that provide kindergarten, please speak to them about the transition statements. The transition statements provide the school with valuable information about your child’s development.

2020 enrolments

If you have a Prep age child for 2020 or know of a friend of family member that is starting school next year, please contact the office to book an enrolment meeting ASAP. With the Enrolment Management Plan now in place we will look at students in catchment first and have a ‘waiting list’ of out of catchment students.

Term 4 Hero Day

At Harristown State School, we share the core vision of success for all students through the four school values of Learning,

Respect, Responsibility and Safety. Our PBL framework ensures that all students are explicitly taught the same expected

behaviours and clear and consistent boundaries are established. We recognise that students need differentiated behaviour

support strategies based on student progress and responsiveness as determined through the use of major and minor

incident data.

Hero Day is a term based incentive that acknowledges adherence to the school values. At Harristown we recognise that all

students are Heroes. For the purpose of Hero Day Celebrations our students are grouped across the following criteria:

In Term 4 all students will participate in Hero Day Celebrations with rewards directly linked to their Hero status. Hero

status is determined through the use of term based behaviour data. The planned Hero Day activities and incentives for

Term 4 are as follows:

(Please note that attendance is no longer linked to participation in Hero Day Activities.)

Due to pool access our Hero celebrations will be held across 2 x days - Monday 9th December and Thursday 12th December.

A letter advising which day your child needs to bring swim gear will be issued closer to the time.

PBL FOCUS

Our Week 7 focus will be on the value of Learning through active participation in the classroom. Active participation

involves more than just listening it is about students asking questions, seeking answers, participating in discussions,

creating, problem solving – having fun through being engaged. Our Week 8 focus will be on before school routines. Please

note that there is no supervision provided at school before 8:15 am. We ask that students arrive at school from 8:15 am

onwards when supervision is provided in the play areas.

These students display exemplary behaviour, consistently following

each of the school values and expec-tations

On the 6th November, the annual Toowoomba City Council Mayoral Awards were held at Toowoomba State High

School (Mount Lofty auditorium). The awards recognise the achievements of students who despite obstacles in

life, continue to have academic success in school, demonstrating resilience and the ability to work in the face of

adversity. This year, Sarah Brown represented Harristown State School, as one of 55 recipients of the 2019

Mayoral Awards.

Transitioning to High School Year 6 parents, please ensure you have enrolled your child in high school. One of the biggest transitions in a child’s life is moving from primary to secondary school. It can be a time full of fun, excitement and new experiences, but can also be challenging or worrying for some children. You can help by making sure your child is prepared and feels supported. What to expect Secondary school offers new social and learning opportunities. Children are often excited about new friends, subjects, teachers and routines, but secondary school also means a move from the familiar to the unknown, and a whole new way of doing things. Relationships Your child will need to meet new peers and make new friends, and establish or re-establish their position within a peer group. Schoolwork Your child will need to adapt to new teaching and assessment styles, cope with a wide range of subjects, adjust to having different teachers in different classrooms, become more responsible for their own learning, manage a heavier study and homework load, and learn a new and more complex timetable. Getting around Your child will have to adjust to a new school campus, find their way around, get to class on time with the correct books and materials, and possibly cope with new transport arrangements. Children starting secondary school might be concerned about getting lost, forming new friendships and peer relationships, handling an increased workload, and being bullied. Parents also worry about these issues, and about whether their child will have the confidence and skills to handle them. These worries are all normal. Helping your child Here are some ideas for before your child starts secondary school: -Take every opportunity you can to attend events such as orientation days, transition programs or school tours. -Talk to your child before the move happens. Discuss what they are most looking forward to and what they are worried about. Really listen when they share feelings about secondary school, and give them lots of reassurance. Emphasise the positive. Talk about ways that primary and secondary school are different, and highlight the new opportunities your child will have. You could talk about which extracurricular activities your child might like to choose at the new school. -Talk with your child about making new friends, and emphasise that there will be lots of opportunities to do this. Together with your child, you could come up with some ways they can stay in touch with old friends, too. Involve your child in decision-making. For example, you could try talking together about school uniform decisions, transport to and from school, and subject choices. Raising Children Network(2015).

From Playgroup– Tanya Cawkwell

Harristown playgroup is held every Wednesday from 9am - 10am in the Activities Hall. No

cost involved. Come along and join in, as we offer crafts and activities for children aged be-

tween newborn to five year olds and are to be accompanied by an adult.

Swimming

There are numerous amount of students who are coming to swimming lessons without the appropriate cloth-

ing. Please check with your child and make sure they have a swimming cap, sun shirt, togs and towel. Swim-

ming caps are available from the uniform shop here at school. Each student requires these items to be able to

participate in swimming.

Swimming carnivals

Senior Carnival (yrs. 3, 4, 5 and 6) is on Monday 2nd December starting at 9.15am. Events will run in order of:

Freestyle, Backstroke, Breaststroke and Butterfly.

Competitive races (9yrs – 12yrs), AWD and participation swims in Freestyles and Backstroke for all students.

Junior Swim Day is on Tuesday 10th December for Yrs. 2, 1 and Prep.

Students will have the opportunity to showcase their learning and swim various lengths depending on their

ability. Water safety is also part of our teaching and if time permits students will show how they can safely

make their way to the side when in deep water.

ISSUE 8—BOOK CLUB: Catalogues have been handed to classes and students should receive them this

week. With Christmas fast approaching, books make an ideal stocking filler. Purchasing from your school

Book Club also helps stock the school library with the latest books, so please think about supporting Book

Club when the catalogues are handed out. This is the last Book Club for 2019.

They will now be $0.80 for a full TORPEDO and $0.40 for a 1/2 block. This is due to the increase in supplier

pricing, but still great value for a 99% fruit juice iceblock.
