All students involved are to be congratulated for their efforts and we thank our Visual Arts teachers, led by Shona Mishra for their commitment to the promotion of the work of our students. Earlier this term, we had students involved in two significant camps. Over weeks 2 and 3 of the term a group of 10 year 9 students, accompanied by Mr Ben Earle and Ms Erin Smith, spent 7 days hiking through parts of the Gammon Ranges, in and around Yankannina Station. This was a highly successful trip and a great experience for the students and the teachers. This trip is part of the Youth Opportunities program. Congratulations to the following students for completing this trek. Tom M, Adam D, Caleb G, Amber C, Maddy B, Gleb K, Zak S, Brody E, Savarnna H and Jasmine W. In week 4, 13 of our Aboriginal students had the opportunity to attend Kids on Country Camp at Witchelina Nature Reserve which is North of Maree. Ms Lina Ruggiero, Ms Amy Coughlan and Mr Scott O’Loughlin attended the camp with our students. This camp was primarily funded and supported by the Nature Foundation Program. It focused on developing student knowledge about the local environment and learning from traditional owners about country and sustainability. Congratulations to the following students for their involvement in this opportunity; Anniemae C, Brodie WC, Ceejay J, Jakob O, Jazzy D, Kelsey F, Nicholas B, Orlando S Orlando T, Oscar T, Rylan J, Selwyn B and Dylan C. Tuesday 27 August was Course Counselling Day. This was an important day as it provided crucial information to inform decisions about the subjects and courses that will be available as well as timetable structures at LFHS in 2020. We thank parents and carers for their attendance on the day. For those unable to attend, follow-up has been occurring to ensure we have all students returning to LFHS in 2020 placed in subjects and/ or courses. This term’s reports have been modified due to industrial action. Each year 8 to 11 student will be provided with an interim assessment summary. This will provide year 8 to 10 students with IBMYP achievement levels at this point in time and Year 11 students will receive on balance grades for each subject. Year 12 students will receive a full written report. Descriptive detailed information can be obtained at Parent/Teacher Interview Night on Wednesday of Week 2 Term 4 or through phone contact with the teacher(s) concerned. Our year 12’s haven’t long to go before they will need to have completed all assessment tasks, including examinations for some subjects. On Friday of week 2 next term, we will formally say farewell in our Year 12 Assembly. Formal lessons for year 12 students will conclude on Friday of week 2. However classes will still run beyond this time as negotiation with individual subject teachers. On Thursday the 28 November, we will celebrate the completion of our year 12 student’s school education with the year 12 Graduation and Prizes Ceremony held at Elder Hall. Further information will be provided about this event next term. I wish all of our students an enjoyable and safe term break. 50 Word Recommendations Competition / Chess Tournament

50 – Word Recommendations Competition This year, we had a Care Group Competition based on writing a recommendation for a novel they have read, to share with other students. We had 3 successful entries who won a prize – a novel to read. The winning entries are below. Ten things we shouldn’t have done by Sarah Mlynowski is a book about two teenagers living on their own. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in teen romance. Ten things we shouldn’t have done is a book I did not want to put down. I hope you enjoy. Kira J, Year 10 Recently I read Girl Online by Zoe Sugg. I would recommend this book to teenagers who love drama and love stories because this book fills you with emotion and you really feel what the main character goes through. I give this book 5 stars out of 5. Charli Z, Year 8 Recently I read Top Stories 2. I would recommend this book to Year 9 and 10 students because this book has hard words to describe and if you want to give new authors a go or understand how they use words then this will be the book for you. I give this book 4 stars out of 5. Alex B, Year 9 There were so many good entries that we would like to publish more across the year. We will start with the 3 below. Well done everyone who entered! Recently I read Scarlet and Ivy: The Lost Twin by Sophie Cleverly. I would recommend this book to around 9 – 13 year olds. This book is about a girl who suddenly disappeared from her boarding school. Her twin sister has to step in. She solves riddles about her sister’s struggles throughout her sister’s life… But no-one knows what happened to her twin… I give this book 4 stars out of 5. Tilly VR, Year 8 I read Amulet 1 by Kazu Kibuishi. I would recommend this book to kids above the age of 12 because it is a comic book based on a girl and her family who has had a power passed on through her ancestors. Another reason is because it isn’t that violent and doesn’t have that much gruesome scenes, but there is a lot of fighting which, in my opinion, makes it good. Also the plot twists and the unravelling of secrets are really good and puts you on edge when you read the story. Overall, it is really good and very interesting. I give this book 4 stars out of 5. Elijah CH, Year 8 Recently I read Car World by Clive Gifford. I would recommend this book to people who are interested in cars because it brings some history behind the cars, it tell you how the engine works, when the first care was made and leading technology in the future that will be added to cars in time. They are also going to make every car work on clean, sustainable energy. I give this book 4.5 stars out of 5. Aidan W

Chess Tournament This year we held a very successful and competitive Chess Tournament in the library. Matches were fiercely fought over many lunchtimes during the cold winter months. The finalists included Rory R and Blade Edwards. After a tightly contested match, Rory won the 2019 Chess Trophy and a beautiful chess set. Blade received second prize of an also awesome chess set. Thanks to all who participated, and special thanks to all the staff who helped host this amazing event. Looking forward to next year’s Tournament! Year 11/12Drama Production

On Thursday August 1st, 2019, students from the Ice Factor program were invited to Government House for a reception by His Excellency

the Honourable Hieu Van Le AC Governor of South Australia and Mrs Lan Le. Team managers were asked to choose 5 or 6 Ice Factor

participants who have displayed commitment to the program and its values as well as leadership qualities over the course of this year. The

students selected from Le Fevre High School were Lukas A, Kolton A, Matteo W, Mitchal A, Lucy H and Max H. Lukas and Matteo were

amongst selected students from all the Ice Factor schools to give a speech for the Governor and his wife. To compliment a great day,

Kolton was pleasantly surprised with a Governor’s award. We are extremely proud of our Le Fevre students and their willingness to

challenge themselves within the Ice Factor program.

In week 3, students from years 10-12 participated in the Western Zone Rock Climbing Carnival held at Vertical Reality in Holden Hill. All of the students completed the wall successfully, with several excelling to earn the top times for the day. Overall, the Le Fevre team came first out of all schools in the Western Zone across 3 days of competition. Congratulations to Callum MD who came first in the boy's category and Steph C who came a close runner-up in the girl's competition. Well done everyone! The Year 11/12 Drama production was a great success and the students delivered an excellent production of Philip Ridley's SPARKLESHARK. The play highlights the oral tradition of storytelling, while addressing real life issues of bullying, belonging, family and identity. The students, in their various on and off stage roles, demonstrated enormous commitment and conviction to fulfil the directorial intention of emphasising the colourful place of the imagination in contrast to the often bleak and harsh reality of adolescence. Congratulations to all of the Drama students and thanks to all of those who assisted and attended. Shona Mishra Arts Coordinator

Deadly Fun Run

On Friday the 23rd of August a group of Indigenous students and members of the Aboriginal Education team walked down to Hart’s Mill in Port

Adelaide to take part in the annual Deadly Fun Run. We could not have asked for better weather on the day, with clear skies and sunshine

creating a wonderful atmosphere for the event. Students from many different schools came along for the event, and the morning was spent

meeting other students, visiting Indigenous information stalls and warming up before the fun run. All of our students who were there on the

day participated in the Deadly Fun Run, which promoted active lifestyles and the improvement of mental health and wellbeing. Hopefully next

year an even bigger group of Indigenous students will come along and achieve some personal best running times!

SAASTA STUDENTS SHARING CULTURE FOR MUTUAL

LEARNING AND RECONCILIATION The South Australian Aboriginal Secondary Training Academy students from Le Fevre Academy worked together on their SAASTA Language Task where they were required to connect with the community in some way by sharing culture. Through a process of brainstorming and planning some of our SAASTA students decided that they would teach non-indigenous children how to count in Kaurna language. Through discussion and looking at the task requirements the students decided to push themselves outside their comfort zones and work with people outside our school community. Students made contact with Good Start Early Learning Child Care Centre Semaphore South to ask if they could share with the pre-school aged children and teach them how to count up to six in Kaurna. Several teaching methods and activities were talked about and decided upon and the girls successfully taught twenty children for 45 minutes and had them engaged the entire time. Firstly the girls introduced the Kaurna

names of each number up to six, they then sang the Kaurna number song with them, played corners with the number and broke into groups and played a number memory card game and then ended again with another number sing along. A special mention to Jakirah firstly for her cultural knowledge, but more importantly the way she rose to the occasion and lead the session. The key learning resource for the students was the Kaurna Warraarra Wonbawonbandi Counting in Kaurna book created by Kalaya Children’s Centre, it is a brilliant publication and valuable cultural artefact. Kids on Country / Martial Arts Program

Kids on Country is an education program for Aboriginal young people aged 12-18 centred around five-day outback ecology camps. The camp provides opportunities for young people to explore a range of new activities in a safe and supportive environment and learn more about themselves. Young people are encouraged to step outside of their comfort zones and learn new skills. From the 12th – 16th August, 15 Le Fevre High School students made the trek to Witchelina Nature Reserve, 625km north of Adelaide. The highlights of the camp were geocaching, the nature reserve tour, kangaroo tail preparation and cooking, bird watching, fence removal and Aboriginal astronomy. Here is some of what the students had to say about the camp: This was the best camp. We learned a lot. Orlando S

Geocaching: it was fun following the GPS tracking and trying to find the little Mentos tins and using the UFH radios to communicate. Orlando T

I loved the fence removal, it was a real challenge and it really helped me understand how the keeping of cattle was bad for nature and the environment of this area. It helped me understand how much we as humans change the environment. AnnieMae C I had a lot of fun and learnt many things. Selwyn B

I really enjoyed the experience going out on country, hanging out with other Aboriginal kids and making friends and most of all sitting around the fire talking stories. I am very lucky to have gone and want to thank the school and Katie for taking us. It was good. Jazzy D The camp was a good experience and an opportunity to appreciate and learn about not personally my culture but culture in general. I really enjoyed spending time with my peers and teachers. Even the camp workers were fun to hang out with. Jakob O

On the Wednesday of the excursion I choose to cook a cake for the birthday of a student on the camp. The cake went down well and was enjoyed by most if not all. This camp was fun and engaging for all ages. Nicholas B

Martial Arts Program Le Fevre High School has been very lucky to engage Rodney Welch to instruct our Aboriginal students in martial arts. GoJu-Narungga-Te (Building Strong Foundations), a 3-week Martial Arts Program specifically tailored for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people. This is an opportunity for our students to engage in a program with structured classes based on respect and discipline, whilst developing individual physical and mental fitness. The Students are halfway through the program and have enjoyed engaging with Rodney. Some of the comments captured after the session from the students:

Rodney is Killer

it’s awesome, I feel strong

can’t wait until next week
