Kozhikode, 24 August, 2013: The Indian Institute ofManagement Kozhikode (IIMK) conducted a half-dayworkshop on ‘Leadership Clinic’ at Vivanta By Taj Surya,Coimbatore on 23 August, 2013. Prof. Debashis Chatterjee,Director, IIMK designed and steered the workshopaddressing the senior managers from corporate world whoare recognized as high-potential by their organizations andare strong candidates for the CEO position and havesignificant strategic responsibility and a global orientation.The workshop was attended by around 100 professionalscoming from prestigious corporate houses andorganizations.

The objective of the workshop was to enlighten thepotential leaders with the leadership lessons which couldempower them to be a corporate leader going forward.The design of the workshop is such that it inspires theparticipants and learn how to inspire others so that theyachieve more than they ever thought they could. Prof.Debashis Chatterjee endowed the participants with a

powerful and proven set of tools and instructed in theiruse. He says that if an individual practices using these toolsthen he becomes proficient enough and shall find that thetransformation has already occurred.

Professor Chatterjee brings to his class a large repertoireof teaching methods that include story based moral buildingand innovative experimental sessions that are unique anduniversally applicable While addressing the participants,Prof. Chatterjee, Director, IIMK said, “Leadership isdesigned with the objective of providing insights intomanagerial concepts and techniques relevant forformulating and implementing strategies in variousfunctional areas”.

“Leadership is embedded in each one’s DNA, it is themethod of going beyond one’s conventional thinking toopen the mind for generating breakthrough ideas andidentify actionable strategies to significantly improveone’s leadership DNA” – said Prof. Chatterjee, Director,IIMK.

EditorialThe month of September has a special significance in IIMK, for not only it heralds the end of the firsttrimester, and hence the “newness” of the first year students, but it also celebrates those individuals – theteachers - who function untiringly to ensure that the students have a memorable and hopefully atransformative learning experience on and off classroom. I prefer the term “teacher” over “professor” tolabel such individuals, for while the former connotes integration of ideas towards offering students aricher experience of learning as applied to life, the latter merely professes the superiority and hence thelimitations of an idea. This column is addressed to them.

It is a repeated observation by numerous committees of the Govt. of India that the higher education systemof the country only converts students to manpower but not powerful men. For e.g. the UGC report onhigher education specifically mentions that to become a developed country by 2020, not only a vibranteconomy driven by knowledge ought to be ushered into the country, but also a new society needs to becreated, where justice and human values would prevail1. Similarly, the Yashpal committee report wasunforgiving when it remarked that “we have tended to imprison disciplinary studies in opaque walls” thathas over time “harmed the potentialities of human mind”2. Thus it is imperative that as teachers we reflecton the purpose of our profession. To this effect, I offer you the ideas on education of Late Shri RabindranathTagore, Nobel Laureate, an eminent educationist and a man of learning, without the corruption of a degreefrom any University, which to me offers a lighthouse of hope.

Tagore asserts that the highest education is that which does not merely gives us information but providesan avenue to lead a harmonious life with all existence. According to him, while knowledge is instrumentalin giving power, its only sympathy and compassion that makes an individual satisfied and contended.Thus true education must reveal man his true relationship, i.e. of personal love, and not of mechanicalcausation. Hence, Tagore argues for an educational system where a wholesome experience of the Wholesomeshall be provided. The teacher’s duty shall be to create avenues for experiencing life’s experiences in thesafety of the classroom. The student can thus be labelled as educated when s/he can appreciate the broadschema of things enshrined in this world. S/he must be able to independently comprehend unprejudicedthe importance and utility of each actor, matter and their linkages.

Tagore laments that activities of men today are just movements bereft of truth, for their spirits are slaughteredand their life cut into symmetrical conveniences3.

I call upon you to reflect on the operationalization possibilities of Tagore’s suggestions on educationalpurpose and process with respect to management education. For e.g. how can sympathy be practiced in thedomain of marketing or finance? How can we increase the affinity of students to management as a subjectrather than converting them to narrow functional advocates? How can we create avenues of application forgeneration of learning and vice versa? Are the pedagogical tools available and employed sufficient tocreate a wholesome experience of the Wholesome? IIMK looks forward to an educational revolutionthrough you.

28th September 2013 could be one of the most importantday for Kochi campus of IIM Kozhikode, since itsinception. The Chairman of IIMK Board, Mr Muthaiahvisited the Kochi Campus along with his team of Boardmembers and members of the IIMK Society. They wereaccompanied to the campus by Prof Debashis Chatterjee,Director, IIMK.

The Chairman, Director and the members of the board andthe Society were all at Cochin as part of the meeting of theboard and the society. It is just and right for them now tosee the campus, up and running with its first 2 yearprogramme named Executive Post Graduate programme(EPGP) along with Management DevelopmentProgrammes, Faculty Development Programmes and someresearch assignments. It could be exciting to see light on avision they have crafted, to establish a campus at Kochifor imparting management education to working executivesand to bridge with Business houses and Industries, Kochibeing the Commercial Capital of Kerala. The campus hasjust announced the notification for the intake for secondbatch of EPGP.

The chairman and his team arrived at the Campus at 2.45PM along with IIMK Director Prof Debashis Chatterjee,Chief Administrative Officer of IIMK Lt. Col M JuliusGeorge (Retd) and his team of senior Functional heads.They were welcomed at the campus entry and taken aroundthe campus by Prof Ananadakuttan Unnithan, Chairperson

of Kochi campus and MrSadanandan, Officer onSpecial Duty, Kochicampus.

They were taken aroundthe campus for a short tourto look at the class rooms,arrangements and otherfacilities. The working ofthe class arrangementsand especially that of theAudio Video systemattracted the curiosity ofmembers. They alsointeracted with some ofthe participants present inthe class during the time.

After that they were seated in the meeting room where aHi-Tea was served. Prof Debashis Chatterjee explained tothe chairman and the members on the activity high lightsof the campus and how he intends to take it further. Thechairman specifically enquired about the type of enquiriesthe campus receives from the corporate and aspiringparticipants.

Prof Anandakuttan Unnithan presented a profile of thecurrent EPGP participants and gave a brief out line aboutthe campus activities. There were short deliberations ontopics relating to those aspects as the group settled downinto a discussion mode.

A delegation from CII constituting 35 senior HRheads and CEO’s from various corporate withinKerala, visited the IIMK Kochi on Thursday, 5th

September 2013, as part of their ‘Best HumanResources Practices Mission’. They say, theinitiative was in line with their continuingendeavors to enhance business excellence amongmember firms and build competitiveness for Indianbusinesses to compete globally.

The delegation was headed by Mr. A S Girish, Headof Human Resources and Administration at ApolloTyres, Perambra Unit, Kerala and covered FederalBank, UST Global and reached IIM-Kochi ataround 3.30 PM. The visit at Kochi Campus wasaimed to provide the delegates an opportunity tosee the newly established Campus at Cochin, explorevarious courses and facilities being offered there. IIMKozhikode has set up a campus in Cochin with a focus onexecutive education, academic collaboration with theindustry and case study development.

The delegates were welcomed at the Campus by a seniorfaculty team. They were taken for a short tour of the campusand then the group gathered at one of the large class rooms.The session started with a program introduction by ProfPriya Nair Rajiv, faculty in Organizational Behaviour. Shetalked about the benefits of gender mainstreaming effortsby IIMK that have created a vibrant campus as well asdiversity in the class room.

Prof Keyoor Purani, faculty in Marketing Management &Chairperson, Management Development Programmedelivered the welcome address. He spoke about thepioneering efforts by IIMK to reach out to industries,business houses and working professionals, initially bylaunching the Interactive Learning Courses through theVSAT/Hughes interactive learning platform class roomsat various locations throughout India, and now by startinga campus at Cochin which will offer long duration careerProgrammes for Executives as well as short/Mediumduration Management Development Programmes. Hestressed that the MDPs are designed and delivered with anobjective to allow the executives to sharpen their thinkingby allowing them to break away from the routine andexpose the middle and senior level executives to the latestthinking in leadership and strategy.

CII Delegate visit ‘Best Human ResourcesPractices Mission’

Prof Omkumar Krishnan, faculty in MarketingManagement, made a presentation about the IIMK Kochicampus and the Executive Post Graduate Programme. Heexplained to the audience about the objectives of settingup the campus at Cochin and the focus on Executiveeducation, Case study development, ManagementDevelopment programmes, Faculty DevelopmentProgrammes, Industry collaboration and outreachprogrammes. He pointed out some of the research,collaborative and Management development engagementscurrently initiated by the Cochin Campus.

Prof Sthanu R Nair, faculty in Economics and Abhilash SNair, faculty in Finance, Accounting & Control, spoke tothe audience about the course design and teachingmethodology, during their interaction.

This was followed by a presentation by Ms Shereen Navas,chairperson of ‘Learning & Development’ at Indian WomenNetwork (IWN) of CII. She was accompanied by Ms ReenaSebin, their convener. They explained the objective, goalsand proposed activities of IWM wing.

Mr AS Girish and Mr Jayaraj Chakyath addressed thegathering and expressed their deep felt appreciation aboutthe IIMK Kochi campus and thanked for the warmhospitality extended eto the delegates. They also stressedon the efforts by the IIMK Kochi team in facilitating thevisit. Prof Abhilash delivered the vote of thanks andexpressed the hope that the visit will create awarenessamong HR leaders about IIMK Kochi Campus and theProgrammes.

The conference was inaugurated byMs. Lisa Grande UN resident Co-ordinator and UNDP ResidentRepresentative. Prof. Prabhat Patnaik,Economist and the former Vice-Chairman of the State Planning Board;Prof. Krishna Kumar Ladha, Professor,IIMK and Prof. Ram Kumar, ProfessorTata Institute of Social Science (TISS)Mumbai spoke on the occasion. Someof the other dignitaries present duringthe inaugural include Dr. ThomasIsaac, former Finance Minister ofKerala; Ms. Hilari Wainwright, Editorof the famous Red Pepper Magazineand British Sociologist and PoliticalActivist; Prof. Venkatesh Athreya,TISS apart from faculty of IIMK and

invited guests. The Conference wasattended by over 80 participants fromdifferent parts of the world – SouthAfrica, China, USA and Europe apartfrom India.

Prof. Saji Gopinath welcomed theguest speakers and the delegates byintroducing the theme of theconference. He referred to the ethosof IIMK as seeking to inculcate acommitment to inclusive socialdevelopment in the students, and istherefore a proud host for theconference. He touched uponcooperative as a self-governingmechanism that could move up thevalue chain by achieving economiesof scale as well as of scope and providean alternative to the firm-based modelof production.

Prof. Krishna Kumar Ladha deliveredthe presidential address, and noted that

the neo-liberal free market modelacross the globe is plagued by financialcrisis, climate change and unequalincome distributions. Governments areunable to deal effectively with thecrises. Could cooperatives provide ananswer? Cooperatives employ andaffect millions of people. Could theybeing in two qualities of democracy:Aggregation of knowledge of thepeople, and Credible Commitment forjustice, power sharing, and processesfor checks-and-balances? He notedthat classical profit maximizing firmsare weak in these qualities; and arehierarchical where self-interestdominates; leading to a lopsidedservice to shareholders rather thanstakeholders. He quoted severalscholars to emphasize thatcooperatives with in-built democracybenefit from the ‘wisdom of crowds’;and offer the checks-and-balanceswhich are hard to obtain in the profit

maximizing firm. As aclosing comment,“Absence of profitmaximization goal andwisdom of the many mayjust create the necessaryslack for the processes toensure justice, equality,and credible commitmentto happen.

In her inaugural address,Ms. Lise Grande – UNResident coordinator andUNDP ResidentRepresentative – bluntlyasserted that the world isin trouble. It facesfinancial crisis, dwindling

food supply, climate change; and thejobs have vanished. Cooperativemodel seems to provide stabilityduring the turbulent times. She citedempirical data from several countriesto describe why cooperative model isa winner in these times. According toher, cooperatives own $1.3 trillion inassets – equal to the 9th largest country,employ 800 million people and arecreating 100 million jobs annually.More than 20% of the global outputtoday comes from cooperatives.Cooperatives look after their membersbetter than their corporatecounterparts, and have severaladvantages such as access to capital,access to power, providing voice andjustice to members, engage in a dialogwith governments and consumers.Above all, cooperatives offerflexibility. However, they face notablechallenges in higher cost of capital,access to technology and knowledge;and have a weaker representation bythe women and younger populations.She shared that UN maintains an active

interest in promoting the sustainabilityand growth of cooperatives asinstruments of social and equitabledevelopment.

The key note address was delivered byProf. Prabhat Patnaik – ProfessorEmeritus of JNU. In his scholarlyaddress, Prof Patnaik noted twoaspects of the impact of globalizationon the cooperatives. First is the well-studied impact and influence ofcapitalist economy and itsencroachment into all walks of publiclife. Second and less discussed is thedestruction of “petty” production byunder the capitalist paradigm, wherethe state acts as the handmaiden of thebig capital leading to displacement andgrowing economic insecurity of thepeople. Thus the state no longer actsas the protector of the peasant intereststhat it used to do earlier. Cooperativesmay be useful to counter thisdevelopment. Cooperatives havepeculiar properties, in that they alloweconomies of scale and introduction of

Teacher’s Day was celebrated in IIM-Kozhikode on 5th September 2013, ina grand fashion. The event wascoordinated by all the student bodiesof the campus and it also got some of

TEACHER’S DAY @ IIM-Kthe older alumni back to their almamater. It was a day which saw manyemotional moments, proud moments,and most of all, “smiles” on teachers’faces.

The day began with the delivery ofcustomized cards to all the teachersand faculty members. The cards for theteachers contained personalizedmessages from their former students.

The happiness and joy that this gesturebrought on the teachers’ faces, wasbeautifully captured in the form of avideo and photographs, which werethen relayed to the alumni along withthe corresponding messages from theirteachers. As expected, most of theteachers and alumni were reallytouched and this helped instrengthening their bond with theinstitute.

In the evening, all the teachers wereinvited for a vibrant celebration in theauditorium. The students gave musicand dance performances on relevantthemes and this enlightened the entireaudience. The Cultural Committeeorganized many fun events and gamesfor both teachers and students, andthose events were also well receivedby everyone.

Cooperatives can be viewed as abridge to transcend the forces ofglobalization and could become abridge to effective and equitabledistribution of gains from the socialand economic development.

However cooperatives face twochallenges: a) Cooperatives gaineconomies of scale, becomecorporatized and lead to alienation ofmembers; and b) constant threat andencroachment by the capitalist modeland the state coercion lead todiminishment of the cooperatives.Therefore a defense of cooperativesmust be integrated with approaches tobuild a new social order.

ALUMNI COMMITTEE – QUARTERLYHIGHLIGHTS

Mentorship ProgramThe Alumni Committee of IIM Kozhikode launched the“Alumni mentorship series” this year as part of its continualeffort of connecting more alumni to the campus. The mainaim of the program is to help the current students of IIMKby getting the alums mentor them on academic andprofessional matters. The program would enable thestudents to make informed decisions pertaining toacademics and career.

Marketing, finance, HR, consulting, IT, operations,entrepreneurial ventures, general management, sportsmanagement, family business, etc., are some of theverticals in which alumni enrol themselves for mentoringthe selected students. Mentees are also periodicallyevaluated and regular feedback is given. A good numberof alumni have enrolled for the program and it is expectedto be a huge success.

Guest LecturesAs part of the mentorship program, the Alumni Committeeinvited some of the campus alums for delivering guestlectures on their fields of expertise.

Mr. Ronald Philip, Infrastructure Consultant McKinsey& Company, UAE, came down to the campus andinteracted with students on 19th and 20th of July. Heconducted workshops that covered a gamut of topicsranging from management consulting career, women inbusiness, to how one can make most of his/her time at anIIM.

A session by Mr. Anand N S (PGP-02), leader of the DataScience team for Verizon Enterprise Solutions, wasorganized on the 26th of August, 2013. With an experienceof over thirteen years in the industry, Mr. Anand talkedabout how becoming a Data Scientist has become one ofthe emerging career paths. He gave insights on makingthe most out of the enormous amount of data andinformation available. Mr. Anand advocated the use of datascience and encouraged his audience to explore the fieldas it has a lot of potential.

Mr. Gaurav Sharma, a graduate of IIT Bombay beforejoining IIMK (PGP09 batch), also came to the campus inthis quarter. Mr. Gaurav is currently working with HP asStrategy and Planning Manager and has also worked withAccenture Management Consulting. He is a multi-facetedalumnus of IIM-K having done a documentary and a coffeetable book on composer R. D. Burman. During his visit tothe campus, Mr. Gaurav delivered a talk on career planning,facing interviews, and tackling placements. He alsoprovided a holistic view of industry life. The session hadan interesting discussion on “Black Swan” events and acase on HP which helped the students to connect with theidea in a better fashion.

As part of the alumni interaction series, the AlumniCommittee organized a talk by Mr. Abhishek Babbar (2005Batch), who is currently serving as an Associate Vice-President in Ernst and Young. Mr. Abhishek was on campusfrom 20th to 22nd September. In his formal session with the

students, he updated the PGPers about the current marketscenario in the Banking and Financial Sector. The sessionalso cleared many doubts raised by students with regardto their career options and preparations for summers orfinal placements. Mr. Abhishek also conducted a workshopon “Mergers & Acquisitions” through which he shared hisown experience of the field.

Coffee With AlumsThe Alumni Committee had another interesting launch thisquarter titled “Coffee with Alums”, and it was centredaround the recently concluded term break of PGP16. Theevent entailed arrangement of casual meets between theincumbent students and alums located at important citiesthroughout the country, and it saw registrations in largenumbers from both ends. More than 70 alums, from batchesas old as PGP10, signed up for the event, and the number

of student registrations approached the same limit. Theinitial meet was set in motion while the students were oncampus and future meets were scheduled keeping in mindthe convenience of both the parties. The Alumni Committeemade sure that there was maximum coverage of the eventand that the communication was smooth. As planned out,the event was a runaway hit, with the students making themost of the informal meets with the alums. The rendezvousprovided the students with ample opportunities to sharetheir problems and persistent doubts on a one to one basiswith people who have actually tasted a slice of the industry.The platform gave the students closer, realizablealternatives and clarifications. The alums at the same timewere more than happy to be a part of the campus onceagain and confirmed participation in greater numbers overthe coming years.

GUEST LECTURES“Overview of the Indian e-commerceindustry” by Ms Deepa Thomas (Head-Corporate Communications, eBay)

The Industry Interaction Cell, IIMKozhikode organized a session withMs. Deepa Thomas, Head- CorporateCommunications, eBay India on 6thSeptember, 2013. Ms.Deepa led thelaunch of the eBay for Charityplatform in 2005 and has since scaledthe program to benefit over 60nonprofits. She has almost 17 years ofexperience in CorporateCommunication.

An industry expected to be worth $1.3trillion by the end of 2013, Ms. Deepaapprised the students with the trends,features and benefits of the e-commerce. The later part of the sessionwas dedicated to eBay and industryopportunities in India. With expertspegging the expected value of onlineshopping to $1.8 billion by 2013, e-commerce is the industry of the futurefor India.

After successfully conducting aworkshop for PGP16 students inSeptember 2012, General Mills cameback to IIM Kozhikode for a secondseason. The popularity of theworkshop can be gauged from the factthat it saw participation from 75students from PGP17 and continuedfor more than 7 hours with sharing ofvaluable insights on consumerinsights.

Sun-Bazaar was started with the aimto make solar accessible to everyoneat the click of a button. An online one-stop shop for everything solar was theunderlying tenet on which Sun-Bazaaris based. The brainchild of SamarthWadhwa and Kumar Gaurav, IIM KAlumni from the batch of 2011-13,Sun-Bazaar owes its genesis to thevibrant and intriguing discussions thatoccurred in the courses taken by Prof.Mahesh Bhave during StrategicManagement and StrategyImplementation. Sun-Bazaar wouldalways be indebted to IIM K and Prof.Bhave for giving us the much neededvision to start of something new.

Our Story: BackgroundIt all started in the second year at IIMK where the craze for B-Schoolcompetitions was at its peak to spiceup the resumes for the hallowedplacement season, when the idea ofSun-Bazaar came into being. How itcame? Well we did a case study of FirstSolar during one of our courses andthus began the heated discussion withmy friends regarding the prospect ofsolar in India that lasted me close to 4hours and viola by the end of it, theseeds of Sun-Bazaar had been sowndeeply in my mind. Thus Sun-Bazaar,the idea was sent to various B-PlanCompetitions. Somehow it landed usin the national finals of various B-Plancompetitions including making it to thenational finals of Antyodaya theInternational Social B-PlanCompetition of IIM Calcutta. Thisgave us the much needed confidenceto actually start of with it in reality andthat’s why you are here reading this,an idea on its way to become a reality.

Our Story: Why Sun BazarSun-Bazaar was formulated on paperto cater to the basic need ofaccessibility of the customer. Anonline e-comm portal dealing witheverything solar seemed to be theanswer to the solution why people whoknow about the advantages of goingsolar, still do not. There was notenough effort to make solar a customerfacing B2C market. Plus there was a

wide gap in terms of whom to contact,how reliable the sources were and whatis the quality of the products. Plus howto get the execution done hassle-freewas the main pain point.

This is how Sun-Bazaar came intobeing; A one-stop shop for anythingand everything solar. From a solarcharger to complete solar powersolutions, Sun-Bazaar aims to be theanswer to all even looking afterinstallation and after sales service. Itwas only later on that we formulated 4business divisions to take care of 4different white spaces in the solarindustry.

Our DivisionsStarting from a simple e-comm forsolar, Sun-bazaar evolved into a

something bigger. We expanded ourinitial plan to accommodate a fewmore revenue streams, after allwouldn’t mind the extra flow ofmoolah.

Our business model currently can besaid to be composed of the followingfour pillars:

e-COMM: The online solar ecommstore dealing in virtually everythingunder the sun from a plethora ofmanufacturers. All products on Sun-Bazaar would be guaranteed forquality.

e-BIZ: The online solar marketplacecovering the who’s who of the solarindustry. From OEMs to Solar Modulemanufacturers from SystemIntegrators to Renewable Consultants,this platform covers everyone. All thatis needed to be done is to set up shopand start trading amongst each other.In the future we hope to make e-BIZthe hottest destination for REC tradingas well.

e-LEARN: Our online learningmodule, e-LEARN would offercertifications and degrees in variouscourses on renewable energy. Thehighlight of this: all courses would beindustry approved as well as at afraction of the cost at which it isavailable elsewhere. Sun-Bazaar is inthe process of tying up with thestalwarts of the Solar Industry as wellas the premier institutes of the country.This would help in catering to themuch needed capability issue thatthe industry is facing and willface exceedingly as the industrymatures.

This 16th September, amidst the hecticend terms and summer placements’preparations, IIMK proudly witnessedall its students coming together tocelebrate Onam, the national festivalof Kerala in the highest spirit andgrandeur adorned by a whole lot ofcompetitions and festivities organizedby the Cultural Committee-CULCOM.

On 16th September 2013 00.00, moststudents of PGP17 were returning froma series of preparatory mock GDs, butunlike other nights, they were notreturning to their rooms. The night wasjust getting interesting as all the sixsections huddled together below theAuditorium with bags and bags offlowers to participate in the Pookkalam(Flower Carpet) making competition.Yes, the most awaited day of IIMK hadarrived –it was time to celebrate theflagship festival of IIMK….Onam!

Onam is reminiscent of Kerala’sagrarian past, as it is considered to bea harvest festival. This festival marksthe homecoming of the mythical figureMahabali who the Malayaleesconsider as their King. Also, it is oneof the very few festivals, that is

blindfolded – one of them had to feedthe other whose hands were also tied,only he knew how! Section F emergedas the clear winners with anoutstanding 4.25 Bananas in a minute.The Forex students formed their ownteam and came a close second. But,they really upped their game in thenext event of the day, which was theTUG OF WAR. With no restrictionson the number of participants, thesections gave it their all. The gameculminated to a nail biting finish withthe Forex people emerging as thewinners over the Home team-SectionB in the final match. Very interestingly,most of the crowd support wasreceived by the guest team.

But the highlight of the day was thebeautiful traditional local dance,Thiruvathira performed by thelocalites of the campus. The danceindeed brought out the true flavour ofthe national festival of Kerala andmade all one with the state’s richheritage. Everyone had goosebumps tosay the least. Thus came to an end themost unique experience in everyIIMKian’s tenure of 2 years – the daywhen they truly lived the spirit of“When in K, do as K does!”

celebrated with the most number ofcultural elements such as Vallam Kali,Pulikkali, Pookkalam, Onappottan,ThumbiThullal, Onavillu,Kazhchakkula, Athachamayam.

16th morning arrived and IIMKozhikode looked anything but atypical B school lined in black suitsand ties. The students donned beautifulwhite and golden traditional OnamSpecial sarees and mundus. Specialmention goes to Section C’s Kaustubh,who, being dressed as King Mahabali,was indeed the centre of all attentionand the photographs.

The day started with the inaugurationby Prof. Deepa Sethi and the muchawaited Pookkalam CompetitionResults with Section F and D jointlywinning the 1st prize, section E closebehind as the 1st runners up and sectionB bagging the 3rd place.

Next was celebrated the most widelyavailable fruit of Kerala, through theBanana eating competition. Howeverit was a competition with a twist aseach section had to nominate tworepresentatives, both of whom were

Kochi Campus is a quiet beginner in the ManagementDevelopment Programme (MDP) space but the quarterending September was eventful enough for those at KochiCampus. It is not about numbers or even the participantsize but each of them being unique for being first of itskind at Kochi and being first is always dear.

July 29 – 30: The first Customised MDP at Kochi campus,for a corporate group came in the form of a two dayprogramme named the “Implementing Change” for GeojitBNP Paribas, a Kerala based company predominantly intoretail stock broking, financial products and financialtechnology. The participants constituted their seniorbusiness leaders and some of the functional heads. Theprogram was facilitated by Prof Abhilash S Nair,whereProf Manoranjan Dhal and Prof Priya Nair Rajiv sharedsome of the sessions.

August 9: The first Faculty Development Programme atKochi Campus was a hands-on workshop by ProfAanandakuttan Unnithan on Structural EquationModeling. The program created a lot of interest from thetarget participants and most of them were from CUSAT.The popularity was evident at the participant size of 36

MDP @ Kochi campusand some getting enrolled at the very last moment etc.Prof Omkumar Krishnan shared some of the sessions.

August 26 – 28: This was the first major open MDP atKochi Campus. It was a three-day programme facilitatedby Prof Saji Gopinath. The participant size was just rightat 19 but came from diverse background like academicsto seasoned business executives with considerableexperience in project management. Prof Prof. Abhilash SNair, Prof. Rupesh Kumar Pati, Prof. Manoranjan Dhaland Prof. Lionel Aranha shared a few sessions.

September 11 - 13: This program added spice to Onamcelebrations at Kochi Campus. The program was titled“Leadership Transition” and was conducted for the coregroup of business heads and functional managers of

Intersight Tours & Travels, anindustry leader in inbound tourism,nurtured by their founder Mr JohnyAbraham George, Chairman &Managing Director. The program wasconcluding on a Friday and the dayafter was breaking for Onam. Thecampus was decorated and flowercarpets were made to create an Onamexperience for the participants.

This was the first talk in the Leadership talk series being planned at IMK Kochi campus.organized with an . The intention of the programme is to provide a platform wherein thestudents, academia, industry magnets and leaders from all walks of life come together andshare ideas. This also creates an opportunity for executives in and around Infopark and theIIMK Kochi programme participants to learn from industry leaders.

The program was flagged off with Mr. S R Nair, founder and managing Director of M/s TeamFrontline. ‘SR’, the way he is more popularly known went on to hit the pulse of the audienceand was eloquent, taking the audience from his gruelling days as a young sales man and thento an entrepreneur as well as a reputed trainer and motivator for budding entrepreneurs. Healso takes sessions at IIM Kozhikode class room on Entrepreneurship.

A Marketer’s Dream RevealedmPower–Marketing Interest Group at IIMK, organizeda guest lecture by Mr. Avinash Pant -Head, Marketing atNike India. He is an IIM Ahmedabad graduate and hasworked as Executive Director with Walt Disney and alsoas Director at Coca-Cola before joining Nike India.

He started the lecture by sharing his journey in themarketing domain so far with Coca-Cola, Disney and nowNike. He talked about Nike and its philosophies when itcomes to marketing their products. He said that at Nike,they have always believed in innovation and thinking outof the box. Sports have been their main area of focus rightfrom the beginning and that is why almost all the topathletes in the world are their endorsers. He mentioned inbrief about Nike’s branding activities in India like NikeRun Club in Bombay and Bangalore, TCS World 10Kmarathon that it sponsors every year, its recently unveiledIndian national football team’s jersey among many others.

He then talked at length about various innovations thatNike has come up with like Nike FuelBand, a device thattracks daily physical activities along with the caloriesburned, or how Nike came up with the eccentric idea ofcolored studs for playing football while black was the onlycolor people associated football studs with or FlyKnits,the ultra-light weight shoes for runners.

Dr. Subramanian Swamy visits IIM Kozhikode

The students of Indian Institute of Management Kozhikodegot a chance to interact with the President of Janata Party,Dr. Subramanian Swamy on 20thJuly. Dr. Swamy visitedthe institute to deliver a key-note address on “Growthversus Development” as part of the leadership seriesorganized by the Industry Interaction Cell of IIMKozhikode.

Dr. Swamy stressed the need for women to take active rolein the development of the country. He believes that coming

10-15 years is the time for India togrow at a rapid pace and stand in theleague of developed nations. Growthalone would not suffice; it should becoupled with improvement in qualityof life, infrastructure andproductivity. Only then can oneconfidently state that India is adeveloped country. In the presentscenario, progress of India and Chinahas been based primarily onInnovation. The onus is on India tochannel its immense human capitalto transform the world.

Apart from addressing key topics ofcorruption & its eradication, the question of FDI, India’smodel of development as compared to China, Dr. Swamyalso emphasized that the need of the hour in India is toalign the material and spiritual value and a mentalrevolution in India. People should choose to not only beprosperous but also happy. Indians are special because theycan do what others cannot. If they realize their truepotential, nothing can stop India from becoming adeveloped nation again.

First year students Somya Barpanda and KalpitaKaustubhan were awarded the prestigious AdityaBirla Scholarship (2013). The Scholarship that wasinstituted in 1999 is awarded to outstanding studentsin the Management, Engineering, and Law streams.Within Management, out of the 31 shortlistedstudents from across all IIMs and XLRI, 16 areselected as scholars after a rigorous interview-roundby a panel comprising of eminent industrialists andpersonalities. IIMK was the only college from whereboth the shortlisted students were selected asscholars.
