Horses for

Special thanks to sponsors:Singapore Post LimitedMr Ong Yew HuatSingapore Turf Club

Horses are one of the well-loved animals in the world. They are strong, majestic and have servedman well over the centuries.

Early civilisations like Mesopotamia, Egypt, China and India used horse-drawn chariots for work and especially for burials. The ancient Egyptians were well-known for their skills in crafting swift chariots to carry archers during warfare.

Terracotta steeds and soldiers were buried in tombs of the first emperor of China, showing how important they were in the emperor’s court. In medieval time, armoured knights riding on horses usually formed the main thrust of attack but this eventually gave way to artillery offensive.

Native Indians in North America discovered the horses’ usefulness and soon mastered the riding skill for herding and warfare. Seafaring European nations spread their influence and power across different continents and this was aided by horses for inland conquest.

Horses often connote honour, intelligence, bravery and many artists have often depicted themin art and performance. In Chinese opera performances, using a fringed cane represents a character riding a horse.

In Singapore, the kuda kepang is a popular Malay cultural dance that is performed at weddings and special events. The dancer wears a colourful horse costume and may mimic the movements of a rider on the horse. This dance originated from Java.

Throughout the world, horses have been a reliable form of transportation for man and as numerous outlets of recreation.

From myths to legends, art to hobby, Horses for Courses takes you on a journey which reveals the strength, speed and loyalty of this noble creature.

1 - This stamp issue features Singapore’s first embroidered appliquéd stamp. The petals of the Pigeon Orchid on the stamp are exquisitely embroidered showcasing the offset lithography with embroidery printing technique.

2 - The world’s first beaded stamp is designed in a unique pouch shape and is intricately pasted by hand with ‘caviar glass beads’. It is inspired by the exquisite beadwork which is a distinctive aspect of the Peranakan culture.

3 - Special ink with phosphorus is used to produce these stamps. The ink works by absorbing surrounding light and when the environment is dark, light is released. 4 - To commemorate 50 years of Greening Singapore, the $5 stamp on the Collector’s Sheet is embedded with the seeds of Portulaca grandiflora. All stamps are from Singapore Philatelic Museum Collection.

National Stamp Collecting Competition 2014 The National Stamp Collecting Competition 2014 (NSCC 2014) will be held at The Plaza, National Library, from 29 to 31 August 2014. The competition is organised by Singapore Philatelic Museum and is supported by Ministry of Education. NSCC aims to promote the study of postage stamps and philatelic materials to learn about Singapore and the world. Through the use of philatelic materials, students stand to gain knowledge in topics like nature, culture and technology. Participants also pick up research and organisation skills, learn to work with team members and hunt together for philatelic treasures!

Mrs Michelle Tan, a teacher from Ahmad Ibrahim Primary School whose school participated in NSCC 2013 commented, “Our students enjoyed participating in this competition; they learnt to value and appreciate stamps. They are now aware of the various types of philatelic materials available. They also learnt that through creativity, passion and hard work, they can achieve excellence in whatever they do; like the excellent work which they produced for the competition! They have done themselves and the school proud!”
