Singapore Philatelic Museum’s latest exhibition titled Message Me explores the importance of communication and its development from the Stone Age to modern day through the museum’s

permanent collection of over 200 postage stamps. The exhibition is designed as a fun and engaging experience with interactive exhibits for school children and families to find out about the many

types of communication. The alphabet, printing, flag signalling, Morse code, telephone, the Internet and the World Wide Web are

forms of communication and highlights of inventions which bridge distance and time.

To communicate is to transmit information from one person to another through some means. The word ‘communicate’ originates from the Latin communicare meaning to ‘share’ or ‘make common’. Printing and letter writing served as the main form of communication. The last 100 years saw a spurt of inventions, such as telegraph, radio, television, computer, mobile phone and the Internet.

See an interesting selection of communication stamps and philatelic materials from around the world, including a 2007 lenticular stamp from Switzerland and 2007 lace–like perforated stamps from Liechtenstein, as well as the museum’s collection of historical items

such as portable military phones from the WWII era; and a 1950s green Bakelite phone which was commonly used in homes and offices.

Children can enjoy hands–on activities like writing on clay, trace hieroglyphs like in ancient Egypt, post a message on an

electronic message board or test their Morse code knowledge.

ExhibitionExhibition MESSAGE ME

Tintin is the famous young reporter in the comic series created by Belgian Georges

Remi, also known as Herge (22 May 1907 – 3 March 1983). Tintin and his dog companion Snowy enjoyed exciting adventures that took them to various places in the world such as Tibet, Congo, America, Russia and even the moon!

One of the adventures, ‘The Secret of the Unicorn’, has been made into an animated movie. ‘The Adventures of Tintin’ exhibition will open in time for Singapore’s release of the movie in November 2011.

The exhibition will showcase the full range of Tintin postage stamps issued by Belgium, France and the Netherlands from the museum’s Universal Postal Union Collection. These include

stamps issued since 1979, upcoming new issues which will be launched by Belgium in August 2011, and personalised stamps for the movie in October 2011. Rarely seen original stamp artworks, colour trials and other philatelic materials from the Museum Voor Communicatie, the Netherlands, and Musée de La Poste in France will be on display for the first time in Singapore. Visitors will also get to view all 24 Tintin comics, and Tintin collectibles from private collectors and The Tintin Shop (Singapore).

Look out for interesting activities that will be organised in conjunction with this exhibition!

There is no man in the history of modern China as universally

revered as Dr. Sun Yat Sen. This year, we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the 1911 Revolution of China with an exhibition on this great revolutionary leader. Did you know that Dr. Sun visited Singapore eight times? Several prominent locals, such as Lim Nee Soon and Tan Kah Kee, were his ardent supporters. Discover the origins of Dr. Sun, his political ideologies and actions, and the role Singapore played in his revolutionary efforts.

On display are the rare stamp collection of Beijing philatelist, Mr. Meng Zhao Long, and artefacts from the Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall, including a calligraphy scroll written by Dr. Sun.

In addition, children aged 7 years and above can discover little known facts about Dr. Sun through stamps and play at The Story of Dr. Sun Yat Sen exhibition. Children can bring home a free activity book at the exhibition which runs until 16 October 2011.

This exhibition is curated by Singapore Philatelic Museum and held in collaboration with Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall. Content is presented in English and Chinese.

Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall is currently under redevelopment and will reopen its doors in October 2011. For more information, visit www.wanqingyuan.org.sg

The Singapore Philatelic Museum is a cosy gem of a place to host a birthday party! We were pleasantly surprised that the museum offered interactive exhibits and activities well suited for young children. My Primary 2 daughter had a blast with her friends and they were engaged from the beginning until the end. The ambience, lighting, exhibits, and of course the facilitator Mr Lee, all came together to provide a fun and stimulating environment for the kids. Even the size of the museum was not too physically intimidating for the children to explore.

Memorable Birthday Celebration

Memorable Birthday Celebration

Singapore Philatelic Museumrecently worked with the Nanyang Polytechnic School of Interactive & Digital Media for two exhibitions – Bunny Wonderland and Message Me. Under the guidance of lecturers Andrew Khoo, Raymond Tay, Ester Lim, and Adrian Chua, final year students created interesting multimedia pro-grammes that engage the young and old.

This is a quiz for visitors to find out if they make suitable bunny owners. In this interactive projector game, children can use their fingers to move carrots and feed the bunnies!
