Study Tips & Study SkillsStudents with better study methods and strategies score higher on their exams.• Everyone is different. Different methods work for different people; the following are only suggestions on improving upon your current studying techniques.

• It is best to review the material right after class when it’s still fresh in your memory.

• Start out by studying the most important information.• Don’t try to do all your studying the night before the test. Instead space out your studying, review class materials at least several times a week, focusing on one topic at a time.

• Have all of your study material in front of you: lecture notes, course textbooks, study guides and any other relevant material.

• Find a comfortable and quiet place to study with good lighting and little distractions (try avoiding your own bed; it is very tempting to just lie down and take a nap).

• Take short breaks frequently. Your memory retains the information that you study at the beginning and the end better than what you study in the middle.

• Learn the general concepts first, don’t worry about learning the details until you have learned the main ideas.

• By studying every day, the material will stay in your long-term memory but if you try to study at the last moment, the material will only reside in your short-term memory that you’ll easily forget.

Music NewsSeven SJF students who are members of the Yellowknife Youth Choir travelled to Toronto this month to perform. They took part in the Spring Concerts of Sir Alexander MacKenzie Senior Public School and the Bach Children's Chorus. They toured Earl Haig Secondary School and performed with the Gryphon Trio at Briton House.

Kacie Hall hosted Open Mike night at Javaroma and many SJF students came out to sing and cheer one another on. Try and catch the next one to hear some of our school's talent.

Six SJF students were selected to compete at the Alberta Provincial Music Festival in Edmonton between May 25 and 28. They were Brian Liang, Diana Rockwell, Bethany Giovanetto and Jenna Orr for piano, Diana and Beverley

Rockwell for voice and Grace Clark for composition. All students who competed said that it was an excellent learning experience. Bethany Giovanetto was awarded second place in the grade 9/10 piano category. Congratulations everyone!

Members of the choir, guitar ensemble, wind ensemble and SJF Unplugged performed a concert called Water Ways on May 25. It was great to see so many falcons on stage

together. One of the concert favourites was "Riptide" performed by the guitar ensemble, the choir, Tanner on bass and Obed on drums. Thank you for all your work and for making it a great night! Go Falcons!

Looking ahead...the band and choir will be performing at the Awards night on June 6 at 7 PM. We will also be performing at several YK1 schools on June 17 as part of our "school tour".

our students areMany students in Social Studies classes this year completed a citizenship project where they created, developed and even put into action a plan in which they can help make the community, the country or the world a better place. Here are a few examples of projects happening this semester:Beverley Rockwell, Cynthia Lalonde, and Kirstyn Falck visited several different elementary classes to teach empowerment to students.Heather Kimmins, Tatianna Lim, and Tafadzwa Sakarombe are inspiring youths in Yellowknife by bringing awareness to positive body image!Sheraz Daher is reducing the use of water in her home. Through awareness, actions

and research, Sheraz was able to make a big difference with her family. Sierra Nesbitt has been volunteering every week at the Abe Miller Centre. She was not only able to get out of her comfort zone, but also helped the Yellowknife community! Stephanie Blums created the Helping Paws group. She was able to make cookies and cupcakes this month for the SPCA. Branda Lee's Remapping the World Sea Level Rise is not only a research based project, but also an awareness project. Branda was able to significantly lower the C02 level at home and is now reaching out to her community.

Travis Stewart, also known as “Chef” began his YK1 career in 2010 as an Educational Assistant at Ecole Sir John Franklin High School. It wasn’t long before this classically trained chef starting teaching a CTS cooking class to students who love to share their delicious dishes with the staff. Travis also plays a very important role in Skills Canada sitting on the National Technical Committee. He has taken students to the Canadian Skills National Competition for Cooking and Baking for the last six years and this year is no different! In a couple of weeks he will be travelling to Moncton with SJF student Clair Littlefair. We wish them the best of luck! We are proud to acknowledge Travis Stewart as this week’s YK1 Staff Spotlight!

MEADOW MUNROEMeadow is a hardworking individual who comes to class everyday ready to give her best. She is committed to getting the most out of her workouts every day. She is engaged and asks questions. In the last month Meadow has really increased her intensity and desire to become a better athlete. She is friendly and encouraging to her fellow classmates. It has been a pleasure to teach a student who is receptive to feedback and who uses her class time to truly improve her athleticism. The Sport School program was developed for athletes like Meadow. Her efforts are showing and it’s been great to see such growth in her and an athlete but also as an individual.

SAHARA LAFFERTYSahara has really stepped up over the past month with her focus in all aspects of our training. It has been very evident in her lifting sessions as she continues work on improving the technique in her lifts. Both on and off court, she is working with a renewed focus that is going to enable to her to raise the level of her game. She has been displaying the qualities of an athlete that is driven to excel and this extra effort over the past month has made her the easy selection for the May Athlete of the Month in the Sir John Volleyball Academy. Congratulations Sahara!

KIRIANNE ASHLEYKirianne is in her last year of high school at Ecole Sir John Franklin High School. She is a very thorough, hard-working, reliable and humble young lady. She is a top student and a force on the 2016 Grad Council. She also travelled to Kenya with a group of Sir John students in partnership with A Better World Canada to fund the renovation of a school in rural Kenya. Students who exhibit her level of drive and community-mindedness don’t come along every day. Kirianne has been offered admission to the Bachelor of Science program and a $40,000 scholarship at the University of British Columbia! We wish her the best of luck!

YK1 Student of the Week

Students are hard at work on the 2015/16 SJF yearbook. It will differ slightly from past yearbooks. No longer will we print yearbooks for students. The yearbook will now be available on our website in PDF format for anyone to print whenever they want. If you are interested in printing the yearbook there are many companies online that will print files. It will also be available on the iBook store as a digital download.

In April a group of doctors presented to Ms. Young’s Biology 30 students. The presentation focused on the career opportunities in medicine. This interactive seminar was designed to engage with and inform high school students about what it takes to get into medical school, what medical school is like and what it’s like to be a doctor in the Northwest Territories. Presenters ranged from prospective medical students, to med school representatives, to medical residents to practicing physicians.
