MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

A new year brings new opportunities, new faces, and a new lookAlthough the season has been extremely kind to us this year, I am still looking forward to

the first signs of spring: tentative green shoots, longer days, and buds on tree branches. With

winter turning to spring, we also have the usual change of season in our profession: new con-ferences in the upcoming year, new opportunities, and the chance to finally get to some of the stack of items in our inboxes and to-do lists.

Of course, our organization also celebrates the change of season with a new conference offering. This year, our conference theme is Understanding Our Users, Promoting Our Libraries, Marketing Ourselves, and will take place on Friday, May 5th at the gorgeous

Canandaigua Inn on the Lake Waterfront, in Canandaigua New York. Please take a look at the conference announcement on the following pages for more details about the presenters and sessions taking place. As always, we will have poster presentations relating to our conference theme, and this is an excellent opportunity for you to display your area of research or speciali-

zation. We are inviting submissions from members, non-members, students andprofessionals. The deadline for poster submissions is March 31, 2006. See inside for details.

As always, we encourage you to become more involved in this organization. To that end, please con-sider volunteering as a member of our executive

board. More information is inside, so read on! I hope to see you in Canandaigua in May. All the best of the season to you!

Fall 2005 Conference Scholarship Winners

Virginia Payne, of Rochester, NY, is in the MS-LIS program at Syracuse University. She hopes to work in an academic li-brary and is particularly interested in the reference, instruction,

and collection development functions. Ginny would enjoy serv-ing a population rich with international students. For fun, she sings in the Rochester Oratorio Society, a community-based

singing group of nearly two hundred singers.

Barbara Fadel, an alumnus of the School of Management at

Syracuse University, will be completing her MLS degree at the University at Buffalo in December. She completed a reference practicum at Lockwood Library and has volunteered at the BECPL Eggertsville/Snyder branch. Barbara is currently work-

ing on an index of the Schlesinger Library Vertical File for Women's Studies for Lockwood Library.

Dalia Platero is currently attending the University of West-ern Ontario for her MLIS. This will be Dalia's second Masters, the first one being in Science. She still has a passion for science

and wishes to combine this subject expertise with being a librar-ian., maybe in an academic setting. She is currently doing an internship at the University of Guelph in the information liter-acy and reference department. Dalia is enjoying the interaction

with students and faculty during her internship. She is a people person - and a Leo - so front line service is always a pleasure. In her spare time she enjoys as much of the outdoors as possible, trying to camp, canoe, and fish when ever the opportunity arises.

Carolyn Harris holds an Honours B.A. in History and English from McMaster University, and has completed one year of her MLIS at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Having decided to shift from library studies to archival studies, she will finish her

degree at the University of Toronto in 2006-2007. Carolyn gained experience at Nova Scotia Archives and Records Management and the Dalhousie University Archives, and is currently enjoying her official foray into archival work as a co-op librarian in Archives and Special Collections at the University of Guelph, Ontario.

The Western New York / Ontario chapter of the Association of College and Research Libraries (WNY/O ACRL) invites you to a day-long conference on multiple facets of marketing. “Marketing: Your Experience Will Vary”

This presentation will address the unique demands and growing needs of marketing within an academic library setting. We will discuss traditional concepts and preconcep-

tions about marketing in general, and then discuss how marketing an academic library has its own set of special challenges. Why hire a marketing professional for your library? What type of support should be in place before adding a marketing specialist to your

library? Learn what five years of marketing within an academic library have taught our presenter. What qualities and skills should you look for when considering hiring a mar-keting professional to join your library?

Robert Chandler joined Rochester Institute of Technology’s Library as Marketing Communications Specialist in May of 2001. Prior to that, Bob worked as a graphic de-signer and illustrator, and operated his own corporate design studio for ten years.

Since 2001, his focus has been on helping RIT Libraries develop and establish brand identity and to promote Library services, programs and events. Bob works with the en-

tire staff, offering marketing and creative support.

Session Two“Survey says …?”Deb KalveeAssociate University Librarian for ServicesBrock University, St. Catharines, Ontario

We all need to gather perceptions from our library users to inform decision-making and measure success. Surveys or ques-tionnaires are effective ways to collect such information, and can

also be useful marketing tools. In this session, Deb Kalvee, Associ-ate University Librarian for Services at Brock University's James A. Gibson Library, will discuss how the Library has used surveys

to gain information, what was learned, and what worked.

Deb worked in various paraprofessional positions at the Uni-versity of Calgary before acquiring her MLS at Dalhousie Uni-

versity in Halifax.

She was the Assistant Government Documents, Maps Librar-

ian and Cataloguer for 3 years at the University of Wyoming. She then worked at the Rasmuson Library at the University of Alaska - Fairbanks, where she was the Government Documents and

Maps Librarian, and then the Head of Cataloguing and Acquisi-tions. Deb is currently the Associate University Librarian for Serv-ices, at Brock University's James A. Gibson Library.

Change has become the constant of the library environment, and concern for the quality of our services is growing on all sides. Many of us are re-examining our goals and approaches to service.

Self assessment and self critiques are paramount. Understanding our users is essential. But how can we be sure that we are on the right track? As our library services are being reinvented and ad-justed to the changing world around us, we need listen to what

our users are telling us even if we find their messages inconvenient or uncomfortable. This presentation will reflect on and discuss how the University of Guelph uses focus groups to inform service

model adjustments and the ways we have re-adjusted our mes-

sages and services based on this specific type of user feedback and consultation.

K Jane Burpee works at the University of Guelph in Ontario,

Canada. When not managing the library’s five reference service points and the information literacy program, she is training, teaching and advocating information literacy skills to under-

graduates, library users, and administrators on campus. Jane is currently serving as a counselor on WNY/O ACRL.

Session Three"Collaboration and Convergence: Librarians and Faculty"

In this five person panel, we will explore two successful col-laborations between librarians and faculty.

Crouse and Kasbohm have collaborated over the past several years to create a “learn by doing” information literacy instruction program for graduate teacher education candidates. They will

discuss how that collaboration began, how it evolved, and the challenges it has posed. They will also share how their own knowledge has benefited from their collaboration as they continue

to work to develop instructional models for educational research.

Warren Crouse is Director of the Center for Excellence in Catholic Education; a partnership between Niagara University

and Stella Niagara Education Park. He also teaches educational research at Niagara University. He has a PhD in educational re-search from the University at Buffalo. Kristine Kasbohm is the

Information Literacy Librarian at Niagara University. She has an MLS from the University at Buffalo and an MA in history from Syracuse University. They are the authors of: Crouse, Warren

and Kristine E. Kasbohm (2004). Information Literacy in Teacher Education: A Collaborative Model. The Educational Forum, 69(1).

During the summer of 2003, Kimberly Davies, Reference/Instruction Librarian at SUNY Geneseo, began collaborating with Dr. Ellen Kintz, Professor and Department Chair for SUNY

Geneseo’s Anthropology program, to design course-integrated library instruction into Dr. Kintz’s anthropology classes. Lauren




Hare, current senior student at Geneseo, was one of the students involved in the original experimental anthropology course, and now works as a reference assistant at Milne Library.

Davies and Kintz describe student engagement in an experi-mental anthropology course and the path that professor and li-brarian have taken to perfect their approach over the past few

years. Combining unique contributions of librarians, professor, and students, information literacy skills are designed to connect course content and the enhancement of student research. To

promote a successful library instruction program, librarians and administrators rely heavily on the systematic results seen on an individual class level. Preliminary assessments, student feedback, and continuous readjustment of course content, pedagogical ap-

proach to that content, and meaningful activities aid in fostering positive improvements in students’ understanding of the research process.

Librarian, professor and student will present expectations, course format, assessment, and revisions for continued and ex-

panded collaboration.

Executive BoardPreviously a professional chef in beautiful Vancouver, BC,

Justin made the 180 degree shift to being a librarian. His current position is as Academic Liaison Librarian at the University of Guelph, with the subject responsibilities for Philosophy, Political

Science, and Government Documents. Justin’s job requires fre-quent in-class instruction, the creation of subject and course spe-cific pathfinders, and collection development. His research inter-

ests revolve around media literacy, as well as the effects and inter-play of various media on narrative (i.e., literature vs. film vs. graphic novel).
