Bosco Community Feast Day

Next Tuesday, 21 May, is the annual Bosco Feast Day. It is a great community day that enables us to continue to build the wonderful spirit that exists within Bosco College.

We commence the day by celebrating Mass together, before participating in the cross country run/walk. Food stalls and musical entertainment are also integral components of the day.

As we will be attending Mass, all students must wear appropriate clothing. This means, as stated in the College diary, that students are expected to wear casual clothing that is reflective of a Catholic, co-educational environment. They are not to wear excessively short shorts, open shoes or any items with offensive words/images on them. Students’ shoulders and mid riff must be covered.

Bosco Community Feast Day is a significant College event, and is mandatory for all students. It is expected that any student who does not attend school next Tuesday will provide a doctor’s certificate to explain their absence.

Staff Spirituality Day

The Staff Development Day for Term 2 is being conducted on Tuesday 28 May, and is a Staff Spirituality Day. As Catholic school teachers, charged with the responsibility of building our students’ faith and spirituality, we need to ensure that we take the time to build these aspects of our own lives. This day will provide us with that opportunity. It is a pupil free day and no student supervision will be available at the College.

School Zones

A reminder to all of our parents, and students with their driver licence, that school zones are in place for the safety of our children and families. School zones operate on all gazetted school days, which are all days that the school is open, even pupil free days. It is essential that all drivers adhere to the speed limit of the school zones during the nominated times of the day.

Q: Did you always plan to be a teacher? If not, what were you considering as a career?Christie: Yes, I had very inspirational PDHPE teachers throughout my education in primary and high school, so I was always interested. I did also consider nursing, social work or a paramedic.

Q: What is the best holiday that you have been on? Why was it so good?Christie: Our honeymoon. It was titled a 'Bush and Beach' package and offered the best of both worlds of relaxation and adventure. We spent relaxation time in Mauritius and then travelled to South Africa and visited Kruger National Park and spent time touring the Game Reserves and saw the 'Big 5'. Then we returned to Mauritius for some final relaxation.

Q: What is your favourite way to spend your spare time?Christie: Being active with family/friends, soccer, bike riding, bushwalking. Watching MKR.

Q: What are the top three things on your bucket list?Christie: Experience Central Australia with my family, take the kids to Disneyland, go back to the Greek Islands.

Q: What is the best thing that you can cook?Christie: Either my healthy 'Stanni Slice' vegan snack, but technically it is not 'cooked', or a mean Italiano Penne Boscaiola - courtesy of Mamma Lina and my first job at a local Italian restaurant.

Q: What has been your favourite concert?Christie: Red Hot Chilli Peppers at the Big Day out in 2000, atmosphere = AMAZING!!!!

Q: What is your favourite film?Christie: Anything with Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson; I think the reasons are obvious!

Q: Three living people with whom you would most like to have a meal. Why?Christie: Cristiano Ronaldo, so I could get his autograph for my obsessed son!Dr Michael Carr-Gregg, so I could pick his brain regarding child/youth mental health issues and strategies to address these.Dwayne Johnson, again I think the reasons are obvious ...

Q: If you could change one thing in the world, what would it be?Christie: The growing epidemic of child/youth mental health issues.

Q: What is the most useless talent that you have?Christie: Knowing all the words to Ice, Ice Baby by Vanilla Ice!

Q: Describe what happened with your most epic fail.Christie: Thinking I could outrun my younger brother; turns out I failed- he caught me then I tripped and broke my wrist.

Q: If you could go back in time, what major event would you visit?Christie: The building of the Pyramids, to see exactly how it was done!

Q: What fictional character would you choose to meet if possible? Why?Christie: Dora the Explorer, to tell her where to go, as she always seems to be lost!

Q: If you had a motto for life, what would it be?Christie: Winners never quit and quitters never win.

A TASTE OF RAMADAN - SoR 'ISLAM' EXCURSIONLast week, the senior 2 unit Studies of Religion classes attended an evening titled 'A Taste of Ramadan' at Amity Islamic College, Auburn. This excursion complemented our coursework on the religious tradition of Islam.

The evening gave our students an opportunity to meet 200 fellow SoR students from schools across Sydney. We witnessed an Islamic student presenting the 'Call to Prayer' and then observed the Muslim students and teachers perform their sunset prayer. Dusk is the time of 'iftar' - when Muslims break their daily fast (from food and water from sun up to sun down) during the holy month of Ramadan.

We too, joined in this iftar meal. We started by consuming a date with a sip of water. The Prophet Muhammed was reported to break his fast with a date, so many Muslims follow this model themselves during Ramadan.

We certainly enjoyed the Halal feast that followed, where collegial discussions were held at tables and Islamic SoR students informally answered the many questions asked of them.

We also listened to recitations from the Qur'an and presentations from guest speakers on the significance of Ramadan.

Our evening closed with a walk through Haldon Street, Lakemba. The 'Ramadan Night Markets' were buzzing with delicious middle Eastern food and friendly, welcoming people.

Year 7 Geography Excursion to Wattamolla

7 TERM 2 - WEEK 3 GAUDIUM ET SPES | JOY & HOPE | A school that prepares for life

'We did a task on the fire trail where we had to find a little slope and build a device out of natural produce that diverted the water that is causing erosion problems for the vegetation. Clare and I built a device where we blocked off the water with a bit of bark and sand; we then built a ramp on the side for safety. To keep the device in working order we put some bark down and put it into the path of the vegetation and added some rocks. The final result was great; the water went on the path going into the vegetation but it also went slowly so that the water could be digested by the vegetation. What happened as the final result was that the water went down the slope and into the bark path slowly, and then passed through the pebbles creating a slow path so that the vegetation could drink the water slowly. We also put in a little path once the water had got to the vegetation to divert the water in all different areas, so instead of one part getting over-watered they all got water. We also built the ramp so that less erosion could happen and so that the people would be safe and that we would be able to sustain the device.' Charlie and Clare 7HK

'One thing I learnt on the fieldwork excursion at Wattamolla was that the edges of a cliff was rock and that rock would eventually wear away. This means that it would be dangerous to sit on them, even to meditate. The rock that we were sitting on while doing our sketches was sandstone. Our guide told us that sandstone took millions of years to build up and it was caused by wind erosion eroding the sand from beaches and making its way to a platform. The sand compressed with the help of gravity and moved the sand closer and closer together to create the rock formation and as you could tell, the rock shape wasn’t perfect.' Amanda 7HK

'We did a field sketch at a lookout having to label the features of the drawing; this included BOLTS and correctly representing the rock formations. We learnt about how the rocks formed and how the different make-ups of rocks affects the way the rocks break off. Another thing that we learnt was how the chemicals in the ocean can break down the rock and weathering and erosion play the biggest part in how the formations appear. For example the vegetation on top of the cliffs that can hold back water and stop rivers and waterfalls coming down the cliffs.' Luke - 7HK

8 TERM 2 - WEEK 3 GAUDIUM ET SPES | JOY & HOPE | A school that prepares for life

ROSTRUM VOICE OF THE YOUTH COMPETITION 2019On Tuesday 9 April St John Bosco College students attended Smith’s Hill High School in Wollongong for the 2019 Rostrum Public Speaking Competition. In the junior competition the school was represented by Jillian Weir, Abbey Long, Charlie Brennan and Lara Pool who all delivered thematic speeches that were impressive and engaging in their content. In the senior competition, the College was represented by Nicholas Osiowy, Jayden Helm and Benjamin Bruckard who all presented speeches with detailed insights and researched content. Jayden was fortunate enough to progress to the Regional Final with his speech that discussed the enduring nature of war and conflict throughout history - and how detrimental this can be on both our local and global communities. All students are to be congratulated on their participation in Rostrum 2019, as it takes preparation, courage and confidence to deliver their speeches. We wish Jayden all the best next week in the Regional Final at St Gregory’s College, Campbelltown.

If your child has an interest in developing their Public Speaking and/or debating skills, we have many opportunities this term for their involvement including the College-based St John Public Speaking Competition that will be held on Thursday 30 May 2019. See Mrs McKimm or Mr Butcher for more details about upcoming events and competitions.

PARENT INFORMATION EVENING Monday 27th May, 2019

Sleep Problems in Teens and Tweens...and how to fix them! Dr Chris Seton Paediatric and Adolescent Sleep Physician, Woolcock Institute of Medical Research

From Chris... Good sleep, exercise, & optimal nutrition, are the 3                 so-called “pillars” of good health in teens & tweens. Sleep                   deprivation is a common, but frequently overlooked health               problem in teens & tweens with 70% of Australian                 teenagers chronically sleep deprived on school days.   Sleep deprivation has a negative effect on learning and                 wellbeing, impacting memory, body image, sense of             humour, stress levels, family relationships & even ethical               judgements. Most of our kids place little value on sleep, &

generally are poor sleep managers. Therefore, educationalists, parents, & health                   professionals all have an important role in detecting & resolving sleep deprivation.  This presentation details the multiple factors that conspire, in the “busy bee” lives of                           our teens & tweens, to deprive them of sleep, & cause them to be tired, grumpy and                                 moody. Particular types of sleep problems, and the science behind them, will be                         explained.   This solution focused talk shows parents how to detect sleep problems, & how to                           implement practical strategies that build resilient, high quality sleep, with the ultimate                       aim of providing protection from stress-induced mood disorders, while achieving                   optimal school- learning outcomes.

11 TERM 2 - WEEK 3 GAUDIUM ET SPES | JOY & HOPE | A school that prepares for life

It has been an exciting start to the term! Last weekend a group of students, Mrs Wild, Father Peter & I attended OzBosco in Safety Beach Victoria. The students conducted themselves in an exemplary manner and proudly represented our College.

This is what Grace Luciano & Elliot Waugh had to say about it:

"Last weekend, 20 students, Mrs

Karlov, Mrs Wild and Father Peter

all travelled south to Safety Beach

Victoria to attend the annual OzBosco

Salesian camp. Despite a delayed

flight, spirits were high as we landed

in Melbourne and we met our fellow

Salesians later that night. Our school

led the Salesian good night that

Friday and the following day we

spent the morning with our oratory

groups. These were assigned groups

where we explored what it means to

be a Salesian and meet people who

share in our faith. Over the duration

of the weekend, we connected with

not only our friends, but also our

teachers and other students from

schools all around Australia. We took

part in many fun activities, some of

which included spending the day at

the Enchanted Forest where we made

our way through a variety of mazes

and activities, an alfresco Italian

style dinner under the stars and team

building scavenger hunts. Overall, the

entire weekend was a lot of fun and

we would highly recommend students

to take part in OzBosco next year!"

This semester in the Year 9 Elective Industrial Technology – Timber Products, the students have been creating bread boards. They have used hand and machine tools including the laser cutter to cut their designs. The students have learnt a variety of skills in this project such as:• Marking out• Planing• Biscuiting• Applying solid timber lippings• Clamping solid boards together (note

of end grain) and the importance of dry fitting

• Equipment preparation• Different glue functionality• Effective procedure order for a

quality finish• Laser cutting• Trimmer and cutters for profile edges• Sanding techniques• Application of an oil finish.

There are some fantastic bread boards and very proud students! May I take this opportunity to thank Mr Andrew Langdon (IT Support) for assisting with the laser cutter.

On Thursday 16 May Year 12 Hospitality students planned, prepared, garnished and packaged, in a very professional manner, three gourmet salads: A Thai beef Salad, The Big Vegetarian Buddha Bowl and a Chicken Caesar Salad with Avocado.

The service period was very successful and staff really enjoyed the fresh salads; staff also mentioned how fantastic and well presented these were. The hospitality class continues to demonstrate a high level of competence and passion both in food preparation and working as a team.

A huge thank you to Mrs Kaylene Cox with her help in the commercial kitchen. Your help is much appreciated.

Year 12 Hospitality (TAS) | Mrs Nita Panagio

Customer Feedback - Mr Vince McDonall: “I wanted to say how much I loved my Thai Beef Salad prepared by the Year 12 Hospitality students.

The beef was tender and the salad ingredients so fresh, while the dressing had a really lovely zing that I can still taste bouncing around in my mouth.

Please pass on my thanks and congratulations to the students involved in the preparation - it was a totally enjoyable eating experience.”
