Thorpe Park After all their hard work preparing for their exams the BTEC Travel and Tourism and Business studies students trekked out to Thorpe Park to see good customer service in action. The day started with an exploration of the park, looking at how the company maximise profits and make the customer experience as amazing as possible which of course meant sampling a few rides as well! In the afternoon pupils got the chance to use their knowledge and quiz the Thorpe Park customer service experts in a private behind the scenes workshop. After an intensive session with their informative guide pupils got a sneak peek at some of Thorpe Park’s props before we headed back to school. JULY 2014 SUMMER TERM Follow us @parkview_school for regular updates facebook.com/Park-View youtube.com/parkviewlondon Follow us @parkview_school for regular updates facebook.com/Park-View youtube.com/parkviewlondon One hundred and seventy parents attended our recent Summer Schools Information Evening. We recently wrote to all parents of children starting with us in September and invited them to a meeting, which was held on 21st May. At the meeting parents were given information about this year’s Transition Summer School; which will run from Monday 28th July to Friday 8th August. This year’s theme will be “The Continents” and on the final day there will be a showcase and barbecue to which friends and families will be invited. Sixty children have so far registered for a place on the scheme. Year Fives Taster Day For the last three years we have been running a programme of Year Five Taster Day; each Summer School 2014 term we invite pupils from local primary schools to visit and spend a half-day with us. This gives pupils the opportunity to learn what a secondary school is like. They take part in specially prepared lessons (taster sessions) meet and talk with Year 7 students, who also give them a guided tour of the school. They also take part in a quiz, which is designed to test their team building and listening skills. Since January this year we have been visited by approximately two hundred and forty pupils and their teachers from Welbourne, Tiverton, and Alexandra Park and Holy Trinity schools. Our last Taster Day for the 2013 – 2014 academic year was in June, where we looked forward to welcoming pupils from Earlsmead and Seven Sisters primary schools. Herma France Neighbourhood Learning Department DEAR PARENT/CARER My time is nearly up; the weeks seem to have flown by. As we approach the end of term, I’d like to say how much I have enjoyed my time at Park View. It really is a very special place. The students are vibrant, warm and welcoming and staff across the school work really hard to support them and ensure that they achieve all that they are capable of. The school is going places. We are already graded ‘Good’ by Ofsted (with Outstanding Leadership and Management) but are confidently aiming to be Outstanding by the time they arrive next (which is likely to be in the next academic year). Building on the firm foundations laid by Alex Atherton and his team, I have pushed everyone to set their sights high and no-one has let me down. We are working on some innovative curriculum developments, which will make sure that students de- velop their Park View learner skills and become the confident individuals that we want them to be. In embracing the PV learner’s skills we believe that our students will have all that they need to become successful young adults and employees in the 21st century. From September, all students will have their own PV learner skills passport to track their progress - so watch this space! Andy Webster will be taking over as Headteacher from September 2014. We have worked closely together since his appointment in February and have tried very hard to provide a seamless transfer for students and staff. Also, the governors have asked me to provide some ongoing support to Andy and the school. I jumped at this opportunity and am looking forward to still being a part of Park View next year. I have loved working here and look forward to celebrating its future successes with you. Have an enjoyable, safe and relaxing break. Darryl McLaren is an outstanding Deputy Garden Manager! Forward thinking and very practically minded. He is able to solve many practical problems, has lots of ideas and when he puts his mind to a task, he is passionate about completing it to the best of his ability. He is able to work independently and is also a great mentor to other students and visiting primary school children. He has really embraced this project and I wish him every success in the future. Well-done Darryl.

Chelsea Norton (lovely Chelsea) is a fantastic tree planter! She always tries her best and will persevere until she has completed the activity. She is very caring and often motivates others in the group. Her ability to retain and then share the knowledge she has gained is fantastic. Well done Chelsea.

Duke of EdinburghAfter 6 months of hard work learning a new skill, completing a service and participating in a sporting activity the Year 10 Duke of Edinburgh students put in to practice their training in camp craft and navigation to complete their first two day independent expedition in Lee Valley Park. Pupils set out in their groups early on Wednesday morning, navigating a tiring 15km to reach the campsite, set up tents and cook themselves a delicious (and in some cases not quite so delicious) dinner. Luckily the weather was in their favour and the glorious sunshine on Thursday morning made packing up and embarking on another long day of walking a much less daunting prospect. By the end of the day all of the students were exhausted but decidedly proud of their first expedition efforts. Only the final expedition is now needed for these pupils to achieve their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh award!

Over the last few weeks Year 7 pupils have all had the opportunity to participate in a humanities trip travelling by boat up the River Thames, where students learnt about geographical uses of the River and saw many major London landmarks before disembarking at the Tower of London. Here students got to see artefacts belonging to monarchs they have studied during their first year at Park View as well as getting a first-hand glimpse of the crown jewels and weapons used in warfare through the ages. During each of the three trips pupil’s enthusiasm and behaviour was exemplary and pupil’s even got to have their photographs taken with the Tower’s famous Yeoman Ward-ers and some of the Queen’s Guards.

Michigan State University students visited Park View in May to better understand students and teachers experiences in British Secondary Schools. The delegation was led by Mr Gene Burns, Professor of Social Relations & Policy of James Madison College Michigan State University. The 19 students were second and third year degree students reading Social Science and Social Policy. Beginning with an outline of The UK education system, the students were taken on a journey from primary school right through to University, discussing the different approaches to education and the way in which schools, colleges and universities select students. Students from Year 10 played host for the day, engaging in discussions around their individual

Michigan State University Visit 20th May 2014experiences, particularly in Haringey and their journey through school as they strive to go to university. Gene Burns described: ‘What a wonderful visit, and what a fantastic impression the staff and students of Park View School make.’ It was an outstanding experience for both parties and will be an annual event moving forward.

Well done to: Rian Anderson, Romoney Crichlow-Noble, Cicek Guler, Vlad Kopchev, Parisa Bakmohammadi, Shamaiya Alleyne, Helena Tra, Landi Duraku, Khalid Egeh, Gulis Gulkaya and Mr Edwards and Ms Fyffe-Locke for managing the day.

Last Thursday Park View hosted its annual celebration day, Parkstock. The day was a wonderful opportunity for students to learn about different cultures and demonstrate their Park View Learner skills. There was a vast range of lessons taking place including a Jamaican BBQ, Capoeria lessons from Brazil, a Mexican Day of the Day skull painting lesson, South African cricket and many more exciting lessons. We even had a guest speaker in to share what it is like to live in Antarctica, with a tent for a home and penguins as neighbours. The students produced brilliant work to demonstrate their learning. Children in Year 8 made creative Anime cartoons, students across KS3 made fabulous head dresses for the carnival at the end and others made baseballs from New York. The day was topped off with a fantastic celebration of students work with performances from Music, Art, Drama and Dance. Overall, the day was a fantastic display of how creative, engaged and interested Park View students are. It would be brilliant for parents to become involved in the day to share their culture with the community. If you would like to be involved in next year’s Parkstock please email me, Jessica Gadman at [email protected] thanks to all who helped make Parkstock a success.
