YEAR 4 CAMP Attention Year 4 parents… Milson Island is only 4 and ½ weeks away!

I’m sure you are aware, as the children (and teachers) can hardly contain their excitement… Our Milson Island Camp is just under 5 weeks away! The final instalment is due next Thursday 8 November. Thank you to those families who have paid already.

We are still waiting on some Medical and Consent forms. For those who have not yet done this, could you please complete the form online at https://sportandrecreation.nsw.gov.au/facilities/medicalandconsentform . You will need to use the following details when submitting your child’s information. Booking Number: 538030 Booking Start Date: 3/12/2018 Booking Venue: Milson Island Sport and Recreation Centre. The camp needs this information ASAP to ensure our children are well looked after.

The parent information sheet can be found online at https://sportandrecreation.nsw.gov.au/facilities/schools/parent . This provides details for parents and children about what to pack, what sort of facilities the children will have, medical information and more. We ask that you allow the children to do most of the packing and just assist where necessary to promote higher independence. A few students are a bit anxious about attending camp (with nights away from home, medical issues or special sleeping conditions being the major concerns). This is totally normal. Please be assured that we are very

understanding of any issues and will do everything we can to make sure every child has a wonderful camp experience. As we have said before, it is not only a very enjoyable excursion for all children who attend, but also an important social experience that can greatly aid independence and maturity. We are looking forward to three fun and exciting days of camp! Mrs Priscilla Wright Assistant Principal (Relieving) Stage 2

DRAMA NEWS

Tuesday was a great day for the kids in the Drama Club. It began at 9am where we all met at Manly Wharf and jumped on the fast ferry to Circular Quay. Once we arrived at Circular Quay, we walked around to the Dendy Cinema and watched many different films that were entered in the Arts Alive Film Festival. Our film ‘The Terrible Suitcase’ was awarded 2nd place in the primary school division and was acknowledged as having the ‘Best Special Effects’. After, we went to the Botanical Gardens and ate our lunch. Then it was time to go home, but before we got on the ferry, we had a well-deserved ice cream. What a day to remember. SPORTS NEWS Well done, Ethan

During the holidays, Ethan M travelled to the Gold Coast to compete at Gymnastics Australia’s National Clubs Carnival. After two days of intense competition against 42 children from all over Australia, Ethan walked away having secured second place in his age group. Due to his excellent effort, Ethan has also earned selection to train at The Australian Institute of Sport for Gymnastics. A phenomenal effort from a fantastic young man. Well done, Ethan! Captain Lulu

During the course of the year, our school captain Lulu has been training with the Sydney North Girls’ cricket team. Due to Lulu’s fantastic effort and leadership skills, the selectors at Sydney North have elected her as the captain of the team. We look forward to hearing of the team’s achievements when they play in The State Championships at Maitland. Awesome work, Lulu! State Athletics success

Yesterday, Ewan K competed at the State Athletics Carnival. He came first in his heat in the 100m sprint race, went on to place 3rd in the semi-finals and finished 4th overall in the final. Very impressive! Swimming Superstars

This week, Year 2 have begun their School Swimming and Water Safety Program. Students are encouraged to bring the correct swimming gear and take responsibility for their belongings. We look forward to hearing of their achievements and seeing the development of their skills as the fortnight progresses. PSSA Spring / Summer Competition

Well done to all the players and coaches on such a fantastic effort. This week, we will continue our PSSA Spring / Summer competition. This week’s fixtures are against Collaroy Plateau. We will be keeping our fingers crossed that the weather stays with us so that we can participate in the end of season finals. Round 7 vs Collaroy Plateau

CAINE’S ARCADE Last term in CCT lessons, students in Years 5 and 6 viewed the inspiring

mini-documentary ‘Caine’s Arcade’ – which is the true story of an

innovative nine year old who builds his own arcade games from cardboard

and other recycled materials. As part of our Critical and Creative Thinking

Unit, all Stage 3 students worked through the seven thinking hats in teams,

before creating, designing and making their own awesome arcade games.

This project helped them to develop their seven dispositions, which we

hope will have a positive impact on all areas of their learning.

Last Thursday, after lots of hard work, Stage 3 finally got the chance to

demonstrate their critical and creative thinking skills during their very own

‘Caine’s Arcade’. The hall looked amazing, with the lights low and the

mirror ball twirling, it looked and felt like a real arcade! Music filled the hall while students from grades K-4 visited and played the

games. The games involved shooting ducks, whacking teachers, mini golf, basketball, pinball to name just a few. Throughout the

unit of work and while creating their games, students drew on their curiosity, imagination and thinking skills to pose questions and

explore ideas, spaces, materials and technologies all whilst working as a team. These skills are all vital in an ever-changing world

where we work collaboratively to solve problems.

Congratulations to all Stage 3 students for running a very fun and successful arcade. You all demonstrated creativity, innovation

and problem solving.

Regards,

Stage 3 Teachers

A SPECIAL MEETING A kindergarten student from WHPS was very lucky to meet Prince Harry and The Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle on their visit to Sydney a few weeks ago. Madeline was close enough to have a chat with the royals and give them a present for their future baby. Madeline gave them ‘Possum Magic’ by Mem Fox and Meghan even called over Prince Harry to have a look with her! Mem Fox was informed and Madeline was sent a yet to be released edition of Possum Magic with a special message inside! A very memorable moment for Madeline and her family!

Annual Trivia Night is Coming Soon! November 10

Our biggest fundraiser for the school year is just around the corner and we need your help to make it amazing. This year the monies raised will be going to a variety of upgrades to the

school grounds, new readers, iPads, Solar Panels and so much more.

WE NEED YOUR HELP!

CALLING ON ALL BUSINESS OWNERS! It’s great when our school community owned businesses get involved by either donating a prize or sponsoring a table. We like to offer our school families the first opportunity for sponsorship. However, if this isn’t possible all you need to do is think of someone you know who can donate something for the night – vouchers, gifts, services, in fact we can pretty much use anything to raise money to help make our school even better than it already is. If you own your own business or know of someone who does we are also offering “naming rights” for tables which, for a small fee ($200.00 tax deductible) is a great way of getting your business name out there. All businesses that make a contribution receive acknowledgement in the school newsletter, logo inclusion on the night’s slide show, mentions on the night and ability to distribute merchandise and business cards. Silent Auction prizes are another must for any fundraising event. Sporting memorabilia, hotels, trips, tours and pretty much anything with substantial value that will make the attendees spend up big on the night. There are plenty of very talented people in our school community and we would love it if you could turn your hand to making something for us to use at the silent or live auction or as a prop on the night - please let us know. Last year we received a great response from our school community businesses and we’re sure we can do the same this year.

If you have any questions or want to donate or help the committee please call Sherene LaGasse 0427 174472 or email [email protected].
