The President’s Message – Kevin Garlick

The Ragnar Relay Experience – Ragnar Niagara: Coburg to Niagara – May 19/20, 2017

Some brave (awesome!!) London Pacers joined forced with other avid runners to form a 12 person Ragnar Team for Ragnar Niagara. I was fortunate to be among this group, “The Chris Hemsworths”. There were more Pacers on other teams, including the overall winning team, Dozen Get Any Faster.

For those not familiar with Ragnar relays, they are generally 200 miles in length, go from point to point and are comprised of almost 300 teams of 12 members (some teams have only 6 team members). Each team member runs 3 legs of varying lengths, usually between 6 – 15k. Turns out, I was the only team member who had ex-perience running any previous Ragnar. The team bonding is great and includes some problem solving along the way – I will get into this later.

Ragnar Niagara started in Cobourg, just East of Toronto, on the North shore of Lake Ontario and ended in Niag-ara. We arrived the evening before the event and Team Captain, Adam Blacklock, had arranged accommoda-tion for the team. On Friday morning, we decorated our two 12-passenger rental vans (window-safe markers) before heading to the start area to check-in. Ragnar is all about runner safety and there is a Ragnar Bible which lays out all rules and regulations along with route directions for each leg.

Van 1 had the first six team members: Erin Wagar, Janet Lapierre, myself, Juliet Veens, Brian Grant and Adam Blacklock. In Van 2, were Jen Archibald, Armin Kruspel, Bryan Carey, Stephanie Cardill, Mark Fenton and Meghan Reid. The start is a staggered start based on the team’s seed time. Runner 1 in Van 1 starts the race. The remaining five team members from that van, drive to the first exchange. Once all six runners from Van 1 have finished their leg, Van 2 kicks into action. “Run, Drive, Sleep? Repeat!” This continues until all runners have completed their three legs. Runner 12 has the thrill of running the final leg from the team. They are often joined for the last 100 metres by their 11 team mates who run through the Finish as one.

No matter how well things are planned in advance, on-the-fly decision making is always half the fun. Unex-pected washroom relief might be found at an arbitrary service station. Lost competitors may be brought back on track with a shout from a van window “Hey, you’re going the wrong way”. Having your van Navigator take you the wrong way on a highway while you are heading to the next exchange to meet your runner (guilty).

We covered the 304.5 km, placing 8th out of 84 teams in the Open Mixed cate-

gory and finishing 25th overall out of 210 teams. We ran an average pace of

5:17 per km over the entire distance, this while being somewhat nutritionally and sleep deprived due to the (fun??) nature of this type of event.

It was then time for some celebration at the post-event BBQ along with photos with the Falls in the background.

“The Chris Hemsworths” turned out to be a terrific team, full of superheroes. We truly were Thor after! “12 Friends, 2 Vans, 2 Days, 1 Night, 200 Mile Relay, Un-forgettable Stories!”

Hello from #431 at the Mount

Took part earlier on Sunday in the 5 km MS run/walk event. The race started in a cool 3 C at 10 am at Victoria Park in downtown London and was in support of the annual MS fund raising efforts across Canada. There were a total of 6 runners, 622 walkers and 1 race-walker braving the cool temps this morning.

And we have results – I race-walked the 5 km distance in 48 min and 19 sec and a minute and 27 seconds faster than last May on the very same course. Can’t say why that happens, but it could well be due to something they have in the hot chocolate here at the Mount.

The amount raised at the London location was in excess of $121,000, and thanks to my sponsors our contribution to that sum was $250. As with previous years, the finish-ers were handed a flower, there was a hot dog lunch prepared by a local caterer and pizza slices from Domino’s, Starbuck coffee, potato chips, assorted fruits, and a T-shirt that I gave to a person that needed it more than I did.

It was a great morning on the streets of London – it will get better than this -- when they have a cure for MS!!

Also:

Took part the Alzheimer 5 km walk on Saturday morning as part of the Revera Team from Windermere on the Mount.

We had about 20 people from the Residence, and when family, friends, and staff joined in, that number at least doubled. The walk started in a nice 12 C at 10:30 am at Springbank Gardens near the Thames river in west Lon-don and was in support of the 23rd annual Dementia / Alzheimer fund raising efforts across Canada.

There were hundreds of participants, but parking for our team was not a problem since we were driven to the park in a Revera bus – Ian our driver and Emma our coach were very helpful and made sure that all were taken care of before and after the event.

And we have results – I race-walked the 5 km distance in 49 min and 50 sec and 31 seconds slower than the MS walk last Sunday – my story is that I may have been slowed by a large crowd at the start.

However, the amount raised prior to the start of the walk was in excess of $170,000 and $200,000 was expected to be reached by the end of the weekend. As with most events like this, there was a lunch – they had hamburgers and hot dogs Tim Horton coffee, potato chips, pop, assorted fruits and a T-shirt that I gave to a young person who appreciated it more than I did – and for the record, two T-shirts for one event is a ‘record’. It was a great morning in the park – it will get better than this – as they increase sup-port for patients -- or better still, when they have a cure for Dementia!

Cheers,

Lorne

I retired after working at Craigwood Youth Services ( a children’s mental health agency) in London after 47 years. They gave my wife Donna and I a trip to San Francisco as a retirement gift.

I couldn’t resist a relaxing run along the Golden Gate Bridge.
