Hello UWF,

What a great start to our year! I hope you are as excited

as I am about our first meeting and the year ahead.

As you know we are celebrating our 10th anniversary this

year. In recognition of this important milestone, we will have a special activity planned for each meeting. At our

September meeting, we displayed the proclamations from Palm Coast City Council, Flagler Beach City Council

and Flagler County Board of Commissioners. Representa-tives from each of these governmental organizations were

in attendance: from Flagler County Board of County Com-missioners, George Hanns, Nate McLaughlin and County Chair Barbara Rev-

els; from Palm Coast City Council we had Mayor Jon Netts, and City Council-

man Jason Dalarenzo and from Flagler Beach City Council we had our own “Founding Mother” Flagler Beach City Council Chairwoman Jane Mealy. This

level of recognition is evidence of how well regarded UWF is in our commu-nity.

October promises to be just as productive and exciting as September. On

October 6th, The Bookminders will be taking a tour of the Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Historic State Park,

former home of the Florida author by the same name, as a follow-up to our last book. The Gourmet Gals will visit Whitney Labs for a tour and have lunch at Captain’s BBQ on October 13th. Both events have been

organized and chaired by Jane Mealy.

Our first major fundraiser of the year, Day of Games, chaired by Linda Jaeger is coming up October 21, 2016. There are still a few tickets left, so gather your friends and call Louel Larkin to get your tickets!

Also, we still need a few items for door prizes and auction items. Give Linda a call if you can help.

And finally, this year we hope to establish a Community Outreach Program, separate from our schol-arship fund, that would provide assistance to non-traditional students, - perhaps women returning to

school after working for several years, or students who have earned a GED and now want to attend col-lege. We may partner with local organizations to provide workshops on topics such as: resume writing,

dressing for success, and honing job hunting skills.

These are just some of the possibilities for this committee. This is a concept still on the drawing board just waiting for some UWF members to mold it and bring it to life! Are you ready to join in this new ad-

venture for helping women and youth in Flagler County? We need your ideas, your support and your

leadership. See me or any board member at the meeting if you are interested in helping us with this im-portant new initiative.

Thank you ladies, I look forward to seeing you soon!

Sincerely,

Barbara C. Holley, Ed. D

Breakfast was served.

Jan Kovacs introduced the meeting’s speaker, Cindy Delecki, who spoke of the power of social

media and the internet. She described various outlets such as: Facebook, YouTube, Snapchat, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, Google and Periscope. She responded to questions on how indi-

viduals can use each of these. Cindy briefly analyzed the UWF website and suggested better

ways to promote the site.

Submitted by Jan Kovacs

Our speaker in October is Trish Giaconne, the CEO/President of the Fam-

ily Life Center in Flagler County.

The mission of the Family Life Center is to end the perpetration of Do-

mestic and Sexual Violence throughout our community through proactive

programs that provide protection, intervention, education, and preven-

tion.

The Family Life Center is a private not-for-profit social service organiza-

tion providing no-cost services to individuals and families experiencing

Domestic or Sexual Violence. They are committed to meeting the needs

of the community and recognizing the specific challenges faced by those in rural areas of Flagler County.

Operating with the premise "Peace Begins at Home," the Family Life Center strives to create an environ-

ment of safe and harmonious co-existence among families residing within its facility and throughout the

Flagler County community, while providing an empowerment based model of help that is self-directed by

the survivor.

Closing

Barbara thanked the government officials who attended the meeting today, and asked for a motion to

adjourn. Diane Parisi moved and Mavis Krause seconded the motion. The meeting was adjourned at 10:55.

Respectfully submitted,

Day of Games—HELP PLEASE Our annual fundraiser, the Day of Games has been scheduled for Friday, October 21st at the

Flagler Woman’s Club. So many of you have volunteered to provide cakes, cookies, breakfast

treats, and of course, our lasagnas but we still need a few more lasagna volunteers.

We also need your help in gathering door prizes and items for our Chinese Auction. Please con-

tact your favorite restaurant or salon and request a gift certificate or use your “bonus” bucks to

purchase an item. I will be glad to send a thank you letter from UWF acknowledging the dona-

tion if you provide the contact information for the business.

Please contact Linda Jaeger ([email protected] or 631-875-3799) if you have a donation to

drop off or that needs to be picked up. Bring donations to the September 17th or October 15th

General Meetings. Our deadline for donations is October 15. Thank you all for your assistance.

Without you, events such as the Day of Games would not be possible.
