Principal’s report

Welcome to Week 6! We are halfway through the term already and I am so proud of our amazing staff and students. Teachers have been successfully working hard to get to know their students academically, socially and emotionally. There is a direct positive link between a child’s connection to their teachers and other staff at school and their academic growth. Wellbeing is a priority at The Entrance Public School and an important focus this year is ‘every child is known, valued and cared for.’ Please let me, or your child’s classroom teacher, know if something special happens on the weekend or during the week that we can celebrate – a premiership or a personal best in sport, a special achievement in dance or karate. We want to know! Leaders’ Induction Assembly

Last Thursday, I was lucky to be part of a very special event – our 2019 Leaders’ Induction Assembly. I had tears in my eyes as our wonderful Captains, Vice Captains, Aboriginal Leaders, Sports Captains and Vice Captains were presented with their badges and uniforms and recited their pledge. What a special moment when our leaders’ parents or carers pinned on their badges in front of the 3-6 school! I am so very proud with the way our leadership team conducts themselves in our school. Their leadership and responsibility have already assisted teachers and their peers and I am looking forward to seeing them continue to shine. Many thanks to our parents and carers for attending our ceremony – your support of your child and partnership with our school is so appreciated. Thank you to our Tuggerah Lakes Secondary School, Tumbi Campus School Captains, Zac and Jade, for running our assembly and to Mr Willis for presenting the badges. We value our partnership with you. Thanks to Mrs Wardlaw for her organisation of the ceremony. Thank you to Emma and her canteen team for the yummy morning tea!

Congratulations to our 2019 Leadership Team

School Uniform

At The Entrance Public School, we believe that wearing the school uniform consistently, teaches a sense of pride amongst the students and the school community. Thank you to our parents and carers who support our school by ensuring that their children are sent to school in the correct uniform and hat each day. High School Students in afternoon

I want to thank all of our parents for their positive response to our unfortunate action of having to ban high school students from our playground in the afternoons. Safety of our students and staff is our priority. High school students who are picking up a sibling ARE welcome to enter at 3.15pm. All students are supervised until they are picked up. Also, if your high school child is sitting with you, they are welcome. Visitors to the School

All visitors to the school must report to the office. All volunteers must sign in and wear a visitor’s badge. On leaving the school they need to sign out and remove their badge. We appreciate your cooperation with this Department of Education policy. Have a wonderful fortnight TEPS families! Together we make a difference to the lives of our children. Nicole Heazlewood Relieving Principal

Kiss and Ride Zone Oakland Avenue

Kiss and Ride Zones are designed for your convenience and for your child’s safety. Designed for quick entry and exit, these zones minimise congestion and risk when used properly by all parents and carers. These zones operate under the same conditions as no parking zones, which means you may stop to

drop off or pick up children for a maximum of 2 minutes. You're required to remain in, or within 3 metres of your vehicle.

Hours of operation 8:00am – 9:30am & 2pm – 4pm

Please be aware that some of our families have received fines from local authorities for not following the above Kiss and Ride Zone restrictions.

VISION SCREENING

Local optometrists from Eyecare Plus in Long Jetty and Bateau Bay are offering a FREE vision screening to a group

of students at The Entrance Public School.

The screener does not replace a full eye examination, but is very useful in picking up children with vision problems which would otherwise go undetected. The screener assesses distance and near vision, eye movement and colour vision. The screening will take place at The Entrance Public School on Monday 11th March. Numbers are limited. Permission notes were distributed on Friday 1st March and must be returned immediately to secure your child’s place.

School Banking is at our school with The Greater. Any student who wishes to bank money can bring their bank book and money to the office on Friday mornings.

Ms Ally Bayfield Organising Teacher

Kindergarten News Thanks to all the parents who started using our lunchbox tips. This makes their eating time more user friendly, meaning more time to PLAY. Playground Behaviour

We have now introduced our playground behaviour expectations into the kinder play area and are really focusing at the moment on rough play. Although most times this is friendly it can end up with someone getting hurt so we use the "hands and feet to yourself" motto to try and reinforce safety. For most of the students recess and lunch are fun times outside with their friends playing on the equipment or with our outdoor play equipment. If your child makes a mistake they will be spoken to by a playground teacher, if it's a repeat offence they might be given a small timeout on the silver seats, if it still continues it will be written up on a green clipboard which is monitored by me (Mrs Ainslie). If there is a serious playground incident your child might end up in the Planning Room at recess or lunch time and you will be notified about what happened. It is very rare for kinder students to go to the planning room unless it is an extreme case or multiple repeat offences of the same behaviour. The majority of the students go out to play and have fun and will be rewarded for this. School Photos

We will be having school photos taken on the 7th and 8th of March. Payment envelopes have gone home and can be returned on the photo day.

A big thumbs up to everyone who received a classroom award at our mini assembly. Keep up the great work.

Stephanie Ainslie, Nicole Crottey & Nikki Wilson

Stage 1 News MARVELLOUS MATHS!

Our clever Stage One students have been learning how to interpret information on a calendar and how to read the time on both analogue and digital clocks, with a focus on o’clock and half-past. What can you do at home to support your child?

Talk about events in terms of time. For example, it’s going to take about three minutes to cook this, so you might have time to butter some bread.

Look for different kinds of clocks and watches in the house. Ask your child if they are analogue or digital.

Have your child help you set a kitchen timer or an alarm clock.

Watch athletics and swimming events and talk about the times the athletes are achieving in the events.

Record special events on a calendar and talk about how many days or weeks before the event.

Locate the ‘use by’ dates on groceries and discuss how many days left before the item should be used.

Have your child help you read bus and train timetables when using public transport or read the arrivals and departures board if at the airport.

Look at parking signs and discuss the time restrictions when parking the car. ATTENDANCE

To get the most out of education, children need to attend school every day. School attendance has a major influence on not only educational outcomes but social outcomes as well. When your child attends school every day, learning becomes easier and positive friendships can be built and maintained. It is important that from day one parents set an expectation that their child will attend school every day. On occasion, your child may need to be absent from school. Justified reasons for student absences may include:

being sick or having an infectious disease

having an unavoidable medical appointment

being required to attend a recognised religious holiday

exceptional or urgent family circumstances eg. attending a funeral Please try to make any appointments outside of school hours. We also encourage that holidays are taken during school holidays. Your support is greatly appreciated. If a student misses as little as 8 days in a school term, by the end of primary school they’ll have missed over a year of school. Have a wonderful fortnight!

Stage 2 News Our classes have settled in well and are working hard to meet Stage 2 expectations. Stage 2 Camp is fast approaching. Camp dates are: Wednesday 29th May to Friday 31st

May, Week 5, Term 2 at Active Outdoor Camps Morisset. Medical notes are now due, please fill these out and return to your child’s class teacher as soon as possible, so any individual needs can be accommodated. Initial 10% deposits of $28.50 are now overdue. Progress payments of any amount can be made anytime throughout this term. If you have any queries about camp contact the office to organise to speak with Mrs Duncan.

Geography – This Term Stage 2 classes are trialling a new unit about our local catchment area “The Tuggerah Lakes”, which

focusses on the many roles and importance of our local lakes system, the environmental impact and changes, as well as the marine and wildlife that depend upon this system. All of our classes will be conducting a lake sample water test with ‘Waterwatch’, analysing the results and sending our data off to Central Coast Council for their records. If your family have been a part of The Entrance community for many years and you have some old photographs of activities on the lake, newspaper clippings or memorabilia, we would love to see them. If you have anything of interest let your child’s teacher know, so we can share this information with our students. School Photos – Are scheduled for this Thursday & Friday. Envelopes have been sent home, orders and payments need to be finalised and envelopes returned to school by Thursday. Please ensure your child is wearing full school uniform on these days

(not sports uniform). Classroom Teachers will advise exact day and times, once timetables are released.

Home Reading Program A reminder to all Stage 2 students to keep up the great reading each

night. Don’t forget to record it on your reading log, in order to receive your reading certificates. If you have misplaced your reading log, remember to get a replacement copy off your classroom Teacher. Remember the more you read the smarter you become! Stage 3 News

Dear Parents/ Caregivers, The Stage 3 Aboriginal Heritage Excursion is fast approaching! This will be held on Tuesday 19th March (for classes 5/6D, 6M

and 6B) and Wednesday 20th March (for classes 5A, 5H and 5E). We will be attending the Girrakool and Bulgandry Aboriginal sites to help support our understanding of Aboriginal perspectives. The cost of the excursion is $12 and is due to the front office by 11th March. There is a limit of 60 places for each day. This is a fantastic opportunity for students to experience Aboriginal

culture. Friday sport started last week for Years 4, 5 and 6. It was a great success! This is a fantastic opportunity for students to play sport on a much larger playing field and try new activities such as lawn bowls and capture the flag. Year 6 students in particular will benefit from this off site activity as it is similar to what happens in high school for sport. Students must have a school hat in order

to attend as there is no shade at Taylor Oval. Home Reading is in full swing and so is the Premier’s Reading Challenge! We successfully started DEAR (drop everything and read) time on Monday and will be allocating time each day to participate in independent silent reading. Students can bring books from home OR borrow from the library. Year 5 borrow on Wednesday and Year 6 borrow on Thursday (4/5A borrow on Tuesday). Students need to bring a library bag to borrow from the library. This can be a plastic bag or a reusable calico/canvas bag. Parents of Year 6 students must complete the High School Expressions of Interest form and return this to the office before Friday 15th March 2019. This form needs to be completed even if your child is not going

to be attending a government high school.

A few more things… ● Please have notes for sporting activities and excursions completed, signed and handed in by the due date. This is

important for us as we create risk management plans for all school activities. ● Please ensure to notify the school of any absences. ● Students must continue to wear FULL SCHOOL UNIFORM (including hat). ● No mobile phones in school. If your child needs to bring a phone it can be left in the office.

Miss Martinez (Rel. AP Stage 3) Miss Clarke, Miss Dawson, Mrs Hyslop, Mrs Ambrose and Mr McInnes

Home Reading for Years 1-6 Please see below for the Home Reading awards that are presented at our morning assemblies. A reminder that awards are given for the number of nights that your child reads rather than the number of books read per night. This makes our award system equitable for students who are reading much lengthier chapter books. We encourage students to read as often as they can and for parents to read to their children also. Every night counts including the weekends and school holidays. To help with the administration of this program please return completed reading logs at the end of each 25 nights completed. Kinders will start their home reading next term and more information will be given then.
