The 4-H Achievement Program is intended to recognize 4-H participants who have outstand-ing accomplishments and to provide incentive for youth to increase their knowledge, skills and abilities. It is a comprehensive pro-gram spanning the entire career of the 4-H’er, awards points for outside efforts and interests and encourages growth and development by awarding high points at multi-county, state, and national levels. As youth work their way through the achievement levels they become eligible for scholarships to teen summit, teen conference, and eventually college scholarships. You can and should start keeping records in September of your 6

th grade year. The

application is posted to the Daviess County 4-H website. High School Seniors take note!

The application for the Daviess County 4-H

Council Scholarship will require the 4-H

Achievement Application.

The 4-H Achievement Application is due on

November 1. Do not wait until the last

minute. This will take some time!!

This month we are featuring the 4-H Horticulture/Garden Club.

Led by Dr. Annette Heisdorffer, Daviess County Extension Agent for Horticulture, who was in 4-H growing up, and Andrea Stith, Horticulture Technician, who is experienced in working with youth. This club is all about anything that has to do with gardening and plants. At their first meet-ing of the year, club members planted flowers in the landscape around the Extension Office. The members have also participated in competitions close to home and at the recent Kentucky State Fair. On Monday, October 19, the club will meet from 6 - 6:45 p.m. to investigate and plant spring flowering bulbs.

On Thursday, October 15, the Ag Club will be visiting Fuqua’s Pumpkin Farm at the invitation of Mrs. Anita Fuqua. The meeting/tour will be at 2:30 p.m. Anyone that will need to ride/caravan with Ms. Angie, the club

leader, will need to be at the Extension Office ready to go by 2 p.m. Please RSVP (you may bring guests) by

calling 270-685-8480, or by emailing

[email protected], no later than October 14, so Mrs. Anita will know how many to expect.

Issues Conference is a leadership weekend, November 19-22, open to High School sophomores and juniors. This conference gives teen 4-H members the opportunity to identify and address local issues. Conference delegates will select an issue they are concerned about and research it before coming to the conference. While at Issues Conference, they are given the opportunity to share their ideas and collaborate with other 4-H teens from across the state to address these issues. For more information on this conference, please contact Lindsey at the Daviess County Extension Office. The deadline to register is October 13.

October 7 is the 4-H National Youth Science Day! 4-H programs all over the country will be hosting events for youth to participate in this year’s challenge, Motion Commotion, and Daviess County 4-H is taking part. Our 4-H STEM Club is hosting the event at the Daviess County Extension office starting at 4:30pm on the 7 for anyone that wants to come have some science fun. A snack will be provided as well. Call the Extension Office at 270-685-8480 to RSVP so we will know what additional supplies we need to purchase as well as ingredients for the snack. Motion Commotion is a two-part experi-ment that investigates the physical and human factors of motion using toy cars to simulate a speeding car collision and distracted driving. Youth will analyze the speed, momentum and kinetic energy of a car in motion, and explore the science behind the car’s collisions. The same physics principles will also be used to demon-strate the consequences of distracted driving.
