CONFERENCES

The Center for Bilingual Studies hosts

teams of student researchers focused on

investigating bilingual learners under the

direction of Dr. Amy Weimer, the

center’s Associate Director. This month,

she and her students presented three

symposia at the National Association of

Hispanic and Latino Studies International

Research Conference. The presentations,

“Parental Predictors of Latinxs College

Students’ Acculturation,” “Career

Pathways of Hispanic Music and

Psychology Majors,” and “Sociocultural

and Contextual Factors on Social

Cognitive Development among Bilingual

Hispanic Children” described research

findings on current projects. Audience

members came from a broad range of

disciplines, showcased students’

developing research skills, and facilitated

a useful discourse that will enhance CBS

research development.

CBS delivered two research-based

presentations at the Texas Association for

Bilingual Education (TABE) Conference

in Galveston, Texas. The first research

paper How do Children Feel Speaking

Spanish at School? An Investigation of

Learners’ Perceptions of Educational

Experiences, was presented on October 20

by Dr. Weimer and Center’s Director Dr.

Esquierdo. The paper focused on how a

group of 5th grade students in a dual

language enrichment program perceive

bilingualism. The presentation

recommended an expansion of dual

language programs that build strong

language skills to help learners identify

the value of bilingualism, and the

importance of cultural connections.

The second presentation, Engaging

Bilingual Students from PK-16 in Authentic

Writing Opportunities: Bringing Academic

Standards and Culture Together, was

presented on October 21st by Dr. Esquierdo,

Dr. Weimer, Ana Karen Mata, teacher at La

Joya ISD, Lucero Martínez, and Yajaira

Rivera. This session provided research-based

writing strategies that can support how writing

is developed with bilingual, bicultural children

Pk-16. One finding indicated that with bilingual

students it is imperative that teachers

connect academic standards and

culturally relevant approaches. Both

sessions attracted a good number of attendees,

and encouraged lively discussion.

Dr. Esquierdo, Associate Professor for

Bilingual & Literacy Studies, has been the

Vice-President of the TABE Executive Board

since 2015. Her role on the Board includes

chairing the Membership Committee

and assisting the President. She maintains

an accurate up-to-date list of TABE

members, assists in the recruitment,

organization, development, and training

of local affiliates, and carryies out the

duties associated with the certification

and training of delegates prior to and

during the House of Delegates at the

Annual Conference. She further reviews

and verifies TABE and affiliate

membership applications. Dr. Esquierdo

has been appointed to chair the 2017

TABE Conference in McAllen, Texas.

CBS celebrates the hard work and

dedication of BESO (Bilingual Education

Student Organization) members that

attended the TABE Conference in

Galveston. BESO worked hard to raise

funds to pay for travel and lodging for 23

BESO members and one GABE

(Graduate Association for Bilingual

Education) member. They attended the

one-day BESO Leadership Institute,

including taking in various sessions and

keynote presentations. The BESO

Leadership Institute organized by

President, Michelle Cavazos, who also

has also served the TABE Board as the

BESO State Representative for 2016. She

represents UTRGV and The College of

Education & P16 Integration well.

BILINGUAL STORY HOUR

Interested in learning how to use Spanish

culturally relevant literature with

children? You and your children are

welcome to join us in our bilingual story

hour. CBS will host the fall Bilingual

Story Hour on November 8 and

December 6 in our office located in the

Education Complex in room 2.216 at

4:30 pm.

UPCOMING EVENTS

CBS is planning the 2017 Parent

Advocacy Conference. The purpose of

this conference is to build bridges

between parent groups and the university

to support K-12 quality dual language

enrichment immersion programs. The

three-day conference will be held on

April 20-22, 2017, at UTRGV.

McAllen, Texas, will be the destination

for the TABE conference October 2017

at the McAllen Convention Center. If you

are interested in participating and would

CONFERENCIA

El Centro de Estudios Bilingües alberga a

equipos estudiantiles de investigadores

que centran su investigación en

estudiantes bilingües bajo la dirección de

la subdirectora del centro, la Dra. Amy

Weimer. Este mes, ella y sus alumnos

presentaron sus investigaciones en tres

simposios en la Conferencia Nacional de

Investigación de la Asociación Nacional

de Estudios Hispanos y Latinos

(NAHLS). Las presentaciones tituladas

“Parental Predictors of Latinxs College

Students’ Acculturation”, “Career

Pathways of Hispanic Music and

Psychology Majors”, y “Sociocultural and

Contextual Factors on Social Cognitive

Development among Bilingual Hispanic

Children” describieron los hallazgos sobre

proyectos actuales, mostraron las

habilidades de investigación de los

estudiantes y facilitó un discurso útil que

mejorará el desarrollo de investigación del

centro.

El centro también presentó dos proyectos

de investigación en Galveston, Texas en

la conferencia de La Asociación para la

Educación Bilingüe de Texas. Las Dras.

Weimer y Esquierdo presentaron su

primer investigación titulada “How do

Children Feel Speaking Spanish at

School? An Investigation of Learners’

Perceptions of Educational

Experiences” el 20 de octubre. Este

trabajo se centró en cómo percibe el

bilingüismo un grupo de estudiantes de 5º

grado inscritos en programas de lenguaje

dual. El trabajo proponía también una

expansión de los programas de lenguaje

dual que fortalecen las habilidades

lingüísticas para ayudar a los estudiantes

a identificar el valor del bilingüismo y la

importancia de su propia cultura.

Las Dras. Esquierdo y Weimer, y la

maestra del distrito de La Joya, Ana

Karen Mata, así como Lucero Martínez y

Yajaira Rivera presentaron un segundo

trabajo de investigación titulado

“Engaging Bilingual Students from PK-

16 in Authentic Writing Opportunities:

Bringing Academic Standards and

Culture Together”. Esta sesión

proporcionó estrategias de redacción

basadas en la investigación que apoyan el

desarrollo de la escritura con niños

bilingües y biculturales desde pre kínder

hasta la universidad. Una de las

recomendaciones indica que, con los

estudiantes bilingües, es imprescindible

que los maestros establezcan una

conexión entre estándares académicos y

métodos culturalmente relevantes. Ambas

sesiones reunieron un buen número de

asistentes donde hubo un discurso activo.

La Dra. Esquierdo, directora del Centro de

Estudios Bilingües y profesora titular de

Estudios Bilingües y de Alfabetización, ha sido

vicepresidenta de la Junta Ejecutiva de TABE

desde 2015. Su función en la Junta incluye

dirigir el Comité de Membresía y asistir a la

Presidencia. Sus funciones incluyen el

mantenimiento y poner a disposición una lista

precisa y actualizada de los miembros de

TABE, asistir en la contratación, organización,

desarrollo y capacitación de afiliados locales,

desempeñar las funciones asociadas con la

certificación y capacitación de los delegados

antes y durante la Cámara de Delegados en la

Conferencia Anual. Además, tiene que revisar

y verificar la membresía de TABE y los

afiliados. La Dra. Esquierdo ha sido designada

para presidir la Conferencia de TABE 2017 en

McAllen, Texas.

El centro elogia el trabajo comprometido

y la dedicación de los integrantes de

BESO (organización de futuros maestros

bilingües), que asistieron a la conferencia

de TABE en Galveston. BESO trabajó

muy duro en la recaudación de fondos

para el viaje y el alojamiento de 23 de sus

integrantes, así como de un miembro de

GABE (sociedad de estudiantes graduados

de educación bilingüe). Asistieron al

instituto de un día de Liderazgo de BESO,

a presentaciones primordiales, y a varias

sesiones. El Instituto de Liderazgo de

BESO fue organizado por la presidenta de

BESO, Michelle Cavazos, quien también

ha servido en la Junta de TABE como

representante estatal de BESO en 2016,

llevando a cabo un trabajo impresionante

en representación de la Facultad de

Pedagogía e Integración Escolar y

Universitaria de La Universidad de Texas

de El Valle de Río Grande.

LA HORA DE LOS CUENTOS

BILINGUES

¿Le interesaría aprender cómo utilizar

con los niños literatura culturalmente

relevante en español? Les invitamos a

usted y a sus hijos, a unirse a nuestra hora

de los cuentos bilingües. Este otoño, el

Centro de Estudios Bilingües ofrecerá La

Hora de los Cuentos Bilingües el 8 de

noviembre y 6 de diciembre en nuestra

oficina, ubicada en el salón 2.216 del

Edificio de Educación a las 4:30 pm.

PRÓXIMOS EVENTOS

El centro está trabajando en los

preparativos para la conferencia Apoyo

de Padres de 2017. El propósito del

mismo es construir puentes entre los

grupos de padres y la universidad para

brindar apoyo a los programas de

inmersión y enriquecimiento de lenguaje

dual desde Kínder hasta 12º grado. La

conferencia, de tres días, se llevará a cabo

del 20 al 22 de abril de 2017 en La

Universidad de Texas de El Valle del Río

Grande.

El Centro de Convenciones de McAllen,

en McAllen, Texas, será la sede de la

Conferencia de TABE en octubre de

2017. Los interesados en participar que
