    Hymn to the Sun

September, 2013 Vivekananda Kendra- nardep Newsletter Vol:5 No:7

Service to humanity is the highest form of worship Swami Vivekananda

Karma-Yoga teaches, "Do not giveup the world; live in the world, imbibe its influences as much asyou can; but if it be for your own

enjoyment's sake, work not at all."Enjoyment should not be the goal.First kill yourself and then take thewhole world as yourself; as the oldChristians used to say, "The oldman must die." This old man istheselfish idea that the whole world ismade for our enjoyment. Foolishparents teach their children to pray,"O Lord, Thou hast created this sunfor me and this moon for me," as ifthe Lord has had nothing else to dothan to create everything for thesebabies. Do not teach your childrensuch nonsense. Then again, thereare people who are foolish inanother way: they teach us that allthese animals were created for usto kill and eat, and that thisuniverse is for the enjoyment ofmen. That is all foolishness. A tigermay say, "Man was created for me"and pray, "O Lord, how wicked arethese men who do not come andplace themselves before me to beeaten; they are breaking Your law."

If the world is created for us, we arealso created for the world. That thisworld is created for our enjoyment is themost wicked idea that holds us down.

This world is not for our sake. Millionspass out of it every year; the world doesnot feel it; millions of others are suppliedin their place. Just as much as the worldis for us, so we also are for theworld. The greatest weakness ofteninsinuates itself as the greatest goodand strength. It is a weakness to thinkthat any one is dependent on me, andthat I can do good to another. This beliefis the mother of all our attachment andthrough this attachment comes all ourpain. We must inform our minds that noone in this universe depends upon us;not one beggar depends on our charity;not one soul on our kindness; not oneliving thing on our help. All are helpedon by nature, and will be so helped eventhough millions of us were not here. Thecourse of nature will not stop for such asyou and me; it is, as already pointedout, only a blessed privilege to you andto me that we are allowed, in the way ofhelping others, to educate ourselves.

To know more about Rameshwaram Teertham Project: Contact Secretary, VK-nardep at [email protected]

    As part of the 150th

birth anniversary celebrationsof Swami Vivekananda, VK-nardep has taken upthe renovation of the 16 sacred water teerthams ofRameshwaram. This is the continuation of thereport series of the progress of the project.

The renovation of Mangala Teertham and Rina VimochaTeertham needs a special mention in this project. They situated at the two sides of the road that leads into the hisland. Hence the renovated water bodies sparkling at b

sides serve as an invitation to the larger concept of a grepilgrimage. The amount of pollutants removed from bthese sacred structures was massive and showed amount of insensitivity and cultural illiteracy even the called educated populations suffer from.

The Green Pilgrimage Oath that has been displayedHanuman Teertham in three languages (Tamil, Hindi aEnglish). Here we provide the oath:

This Teertham is the heritage of all Indians. So

I will beautify this Teertham with beautiful auseful vegetation.

I will not allow any water pollution in tTeertham.

I will assure this Teertham shall harvest rwater optimally.

I will not bring air-polluting vehicles near Teertham.

A glimpse of the pre-cleaning and pre-revival photo of the Teertham contrastedwith what it has become now: This showsthe amount of dedicated work that hasgone into the cleaning of the pond.

The green pilgrimage oath displayed at HanumanTeertham. This multi-lingual display will be put at

    all the Teerthams.

Here we see an example of hothe local participation transforming the landscape in green way. A local tea vendor habeen nurturing this sapling opapal (Arasu) which will soon grointo a shade giving tree. Th

concept of transforming aaverage pilgrim to the holy islaninto a green pilgrim envisioninculcating such a commitment the heart of every visitor. That the reason why VK-nardep planthe installation of the green pilgrimoath at every renovated Teertham

Though Mangala Teertham (top) and RinaVimochana Teertham (below) look similar, they can be differentiated by the steps onall the sides of Mangala Teertham. Belowthe rectangular inner structure can be

The same Reality presents Itself as Nature when contacted through the senses, mind andintellect. Therefore, the sense-bound pleasure seekers are also adoring the same Reality inaccordance with their understanding and attainments. All beings are verily resting in God andenjoying Him only, while their readings and interpretations of Him vary infinitely.

    From our

    Publications

In this excerpt from Akshaya Vikas we see some of the proposed policy measufor water conservation by different levels of administrative bodies for differhabitations like the rural and urban areas. An eco-toon shows how the traditiowater management structures and temples have been aligned. Watershmanagement has provided benefits: this shows how proactive efforts can odisadvantaged farmers positive solutions to overcome adverse conditions.

Everyone in the world should be able to sleep without fear, at least for one night. Everyoneshould be able to eat to his fill, at least for one day. There should be at least one day whenhospitals see no one admitted due to violence. By doing selfless service for at least one day, everyone should help the poor and needy. It is Amma's prayer that at least this small dream berealized.

Wise physicians knew that letnature take its course withintervention would often allow natself-regulation to make the cure. T

were not averse to claiming credittheir skill when this happened. I ththe same may be true about planemedicine: our ignorance of the Esystem is overwhelming intensified by the tendency to famodel simulations over experimeobservation, and measurem.Global heating would not hhappened but for the rapid expansin numbers and wealth of humanitwe fail to curb global heating, planet could massively and cruelly us, in the same merciless way that

have eliminated so many specieschanging their environment into where survival is difficult. Are sufficiently talented to take on wmight become the onerous permantask of keeping the Earth homeostasis? ...The alternative isacceptance of a massive natural cuhumanity and a return to an Earth freely regulates itself. Perhaps greatest value of the Gaia concept in its metaphor of a living Earth, wreminds us that we are part of it

that our contract with Gaia is not abhuman rights alone, but incluhuman obligations.

It's mainly due to our own actions thatnegatively affect nature like thedestroying forests, polluting rivers, cutting down trees. We have disturbedthe balance of nature, disturbed thebalance of the earth. Just like a buildingstanding on pillars: if you demolish onepillar, that will create an imbalance inthe whole structure. We are drilling oilwells; we are destroying mountains, polluting rivers, cutting down trees. Sothe only way is to have acompassionate approach. Lookinwards, within you, and try to have acompassionate approach to nature. Forexample, suppose there's a hugebanyan tree filled with ripe leaves on it,and an eagle flies and sits on one of its

branches, and all of a sudden, theleaves wither away. Maybe thoseleaves were about to be shed anyway, and it was just their time. So this entireuniverse has a rhythm to it. There's aharmony. There's a rhythm in everyaction that you can have, knowingly orunknowingly. Something that happensin one corner of the earth can have animpact on the other corner. So we arenot isolated like islands. We are all partof the universal chain. If we expectothers to change first, nothing will

happen. Instead of expecting others tochange first, we have to change firstand then others will changeautomatically.

Awareness and PlanetOuter and Inner Gaia and Humanity

    James LoveloBio-physi

The individual parts of the living systemare whole and intelligent since thechain of self-organization is recursive. Not surprisingly, each component haswithin it the wisdom of the whole, andthey unfold together, reorganizing alongthe way. Living in an unyieldingmachine-system, the individual isforced to become like a machine, andhe is alienated from nature. It is notmerely objects that people crave, butalso inner life and meaning. In theabsence of this inner life, a fog settlesover the mind. Modernity glorifiesindividualism, but it atomizes the self, creating emptiness and despondency. The zone of harmony that lies betweenfreedom and responsibility is a very thin

line. As the individual becomesisolated, he forges links with imagesand reflections. It becomes easier tolive in an artificial world that is asimulation of reality. It is easy to indulgein make-believe and fantasy in themimic world. It is difficult there todistinguish truth from falsehood, and torealize that there is no soul behind themechanical motion. The challenge isto balance the exploration of the outerwith a corresponding exploration of theinner, to balance ownership with

compassion, to balance the body withthe spirit.
