Speaking without notes at the company's annual shareholders meeting Wednesday, April 23, Bill Nuti, NCR chairman and chief executive, said he and his colleagues have "our feet on the ground and our head in the clouds." The biggest publicly traded company based in Dayton finds itself No. 1 in re- tail self-checkout equipment, airline self-check-in kiosks and ATMs, Nuti said. "We're starting out in a good spot," said Nuti, who has been CEO for nearly three years. "This company has a good market position." And while NCR — once known as National Cash Register — has come a "long way" toward greater productivity and efficiency, the company still has work to do, the CEO said. Nuti hailed what he said was NCR's best performance since its spinoff from AT&T in January 1997. NCR saw $219 million from continuing operations in 2007, up from $154 million in 2006, and $4.97 billion in revenue from con- tinuing operations last year, up from nearly $4.6 billion in 2006. Emerging markets that will get growing attention include health care, travel and hospitality, gaming and entertainment as well government and public sec- tor. The company has also studied what Nuti called the "digital-native" generation — young people who have grown up surrounded by self-service technology. He pointed to surveys saying that the number of people willing to use such technology will only rise. One shareholder spoke up at the meeting, Bob O'Connor, 75, of Centerville, who retired from NCR in 1994 as director of labor relations. He asked Nuti to consider an increase in pension payments. In reply, Nuti pointed to escalating health care costs as "incredibly exorbi- tant." He made no promises, but said the company "will look at your benefits compared to our peer group." DAYTON, April 24, 2007 — Decision makers at NCR celebrated their best year in a decade by pledging a greater focus on their customers' customers, self-service technologies, and emerging markets. Trustee Jim Carroll is currently communicating with members around the world to solicit some dedicated volunteer time to help us maintain and increase our member-ship and to garner news of interest that can be shared in your newslet-ter.

A major THANK YOU to the many of you who have contributed. Keep up the good work.

Please mark your calendars for the

I am Bud Kotvas, President of the CRCC (Cash Register Collectors Club). Our mission is to preserve the interest in antique cash registers and have a camaraderie among col-lectors. Some of our members are retirees of National Cash Register or have worked the cash register busi-ness. We have a member, Gerald Beeson from Rowlett, Tx 75089-3913, phone 972 463 9398, who is trying to gather information on H. O. Whistler.

In 1963, Mr. Beeson purchased a cash register business from H. O. Whistler. Mr. Whistler was then in his mid-60s and was involved or worked for NCR in his early twenties. The story goes that Mr. Whistler was involved in the first large order of 2000 class machines to department stores. He also was in-volved in the formation of the Sugar Camp Project.

Mr. Beeson would like to talk with anyone who may have any information about H. O. Whistler. Thank you, Bud

upcoming Annual Business Meeting. It will be held September 11, 2008, at the NCR Country Club in Dayton. Last year’s meeting was fun and infor-mative with a little different format.

We plan to do even better this year.

The 2008 hardcopy of the NCR REA Membership Directory is in the mail.

Happy reading. Hope to hear from you.

...NCR at one time had a company slogan. In 1921, in a continuing effort to involve the employ-ees and to stimulate thought by the employees, a slogan contest was initiated. In June 1907 over 5000 entries were received from 1150 employees. The winning entry, chosen by the Advertising De-partment was “National in Name, Universal in Use.” No idea how long it was used by the com-pany, however, we do know it was never included among the many sayings, mottoes, and slogans which were printed on the outside walls of many of the buildings in the Dayton complex.

When NCR management, in 2007, moved the ex-ecutive offices to New York City, it was not the first time that the executive office had been move out of Dayton. In a written history of NCR’s em-ployee newsletter, it reads, “From July 1908 through April 1910, the newsletter known at the time as The National Cash Register was edited from New York City as the executive offices were in New York.” I have not been able to determine exactly when the office returned to Dayton, how-ever, the history does state the newsletter was ed-ited in Dayton beginning in May 1910.

It may well be that the movement of the executive offices to New York was an extension of a threat made by Mr. Patterson as early as 1906 and with more urgency early in 1907. That threat, to move the company out of Dayton, was mentioned in a speech in January 1907, when Mr. Patterson said he considered the City of Dayton backward, un-progressive, and lacking in public spirit and show-ing little inclination to help NCR continue to grow as it had over the past 23 years. Mr. Hugh Chalmers, Patterson’s second in command and General Manager at the time, in a speech to the city fathers of Dayton, outlined in more detail Mr. Patterson’s thoughts.

Civic improvements were needed. Public trans-portation ( getting employees to and from the plant), better roads and railroads (getting raw ma-

terials in and finished products out), parks and en-tertainment (something beyond employment to offer new employees moving to Dayton), a Board of Trade to work toward advancing current busi-ness and promoting new business ( other cities were doing just that), more effective police depart-ment ( easier to form the character of the young than to reform the adults), better school system ( too many children quitting and not educated to enter business and industry), additional bridges across the Miami ( better access to the city west of the river), and an updated sewer system (unsanitary conditions were affecting the health of the employees). Mr. Chalmers’ stressed that these changes would benefit NCR but they would have even a greater affect on the city as a whole.

Mr. Chalmers went on to point out what NCR meant to the city: over 5000 people employed with an annual payroll of $5,000,000 and over $2,000,000 of local purchasing. Projections were for all these numbers to double in five years. He reminded them that 96% of all the cash registers in use in the world were manufactured right here in Dayton and that was just the beginning. He asked this question, “How will the city of Dayton ever attract new business if they let their largest em-ployer (NCR) leave?”

He closed by assuring them that the move out of Dayton was not an idle threat and the company’s going or staying was in the hands of the city. He made it plain that other cities were making offers to the company. He had letters from one city in particular, Buffalo, NY, and detailed why Buffalo was a viable option.

The threat must have been met head on by the city as NCR still counts Dayton as its headquarters even though all manufacturing as well as the ex-ecutive offices have departed.

May 8, 2008 • Teradata reports 2 percent revenue growth over the first quarter of 2007 • Teradata generates EPS of $0.23, maintains full-year EPS guidance • Cash from Operations of $143 million, versus $102 million in the year-ago quarter MIAMISBURG, Ohio – Teradata Corporation (NYSE: TDC), the world’s largest company solely focused on data warehousing and enterprise analytics, today reported revenue of $375 million for the first quarter of 2008, a 2 percent increase from $367 million in the first quarter of 2007. Included in the year-over-year comparison was 4 percentage points of benefit from currency translation. Gross margin in the first quarter was 51.7 percent versus 53.4 percent in the first quarter of 2007. Gross margin was lower in the first quarter of 2008 primarily due to lower product volume in the Americas region. Teradata’s first-quarter net income was $42 million, or $0.23 per diluted share, which compared to $43 million, or $0.24 per diluted share, in the first quarter of 2007. As expected, Teradata’s first quarter results included $11 million of incremental costs associated with Teradata now operating as an independent publicly-traded company. “We continue to see overall global demand for enterprise data warehousing remain strong, as companies look to Teradata to achieve competitive advantage with our best-in-class data warehousing

solutions. While we are disappointed with our start to the year, primarily due to lengthening sales cycles in the United States, the fundamentals of our business remain solid and we are maintaining our guidance for 2008,” said Mike Koehler, president and chief executive officer of Teradata. “Our services business grew 20 percent in the quarter and service margins increased 1.3 points. Customer activity is strong entering the second quarter, especially internationally. “We are investing for growth, both in our innovative technology and in our market coverage. We just introduced our comprehensive new platform family, which sets the standard in data warehousing and leverages the power of our industry-leading Teradata 12 database, and we are increasing our number of sales territories. Data will continue to grow exponentially in the years to come, both in volume and complexity, and Teradata is well positioned to help organizations address the challenge and gain competitive advantage.”

FROM OUR MEMBERS

Approximately one third of our members come from the ranks of field engineers, customer en-gineers, and technical service. We imagine many of you have spent a considerable amount of time at this facility. To my knowledge, the guest with the longest stay was an engineer from Australia who spent 54 weeks living here. He was a young man with a family back home and he did not visit his family nor did they come to the States during that time. This picture has a mistake; it identifies Wash-ington Church Road as Spring Valley Road. At the time of this photo, Spring Valley Road could not have been seen. The road at the up-

per part of the picture, behind the dormitories, was Swamp Road. After some time, the name was changed to Spring Valley Road and it remains so to-day. The complex was purchased by Dayton Christian Schools and most of the facility is once again in use educating people. They are currently not using the dormitories. But Building A is still called Building A.

A gathering in San Diego found this three fellows together. Gerry Mikas, on the left was a key re-source in Rancho Bernardo large systems, . The two on the right based their brilliant careers on the ever-exciting I systems, IRX and ITX. Re-member the NCR 9300 and Gary Mathews and Tony Bleses?

At the same San Diego gathering [l to r] Lupe Angulo, Glynda Bockler, Joe Hightshoe, Charlotte Angulo, Rich Vetech, and Rocky Graziano shared memories. [Isn’t that the notorious Jim Shelton in the background?]

NCR Retiree's of San Diego held their Annual Holiday Luncheon at the Olive Garden Restaurant on De-cember 12, 2007. [Photos above.] Forty six guests attended including Gary Mathews who traveled from Phoenix, Arizona, to attend our celebration. We had 22 winners of our door prizes which were valued over $300. Our membership ended the year with 58 members. Gordon Belgum, President

I am a retiree of NCR (1966-1985), and also a REA member. I hired into the Research & Development Proto Labs in Building 30, second floor. It was the lab that manufactured NCR's first Integrated Circuits before moving to the Manufacturing Building that was built on Byers Road in Miamisburg (Micro Electronics Department, better known as MED). We moved to that building in 1972 with 15 people. The reason I am writing you is to forward a picture of the first IC Circuit that NCR actually made for OEM use. It was a Dual 64bit Shift Register. I encapsulated the wafer and packaged the 16-pin device. I made only five of these while working at Building 30. I have one and I gave one to Roy Fahren-bruck (who passed away in June 2003). I am not sure who the other ones were given too. I thought maybe some former MED NCR employees might be interested in seeing the picture and story in the NCR Retiree News. I would like to donate the actual encapsulated parts to the NCR Archive - if they would be interested in it. In 1969, I and the final test group put on a dog-and-pony show for Mr. Oelman, the NCR CEO at that time, and his Executive Staff. It was to test this 16-pin IC (NCR's first Integrated Circuit) on the in-house built Digital Tester. You could not buy this kind of test equipment back then; we were too far ahead of everyone else in the field. We were only suppose to build prototype ICs at the R&D Lab in Building 30 and then farm them out to someone else to build, but we were so far ahead of everyone else - that's why NCR built the manufacturing plant on Byers Rd. (my understanding). I am also attaching a picture of the many things that were passed out to employees after certain ac-complishments.
