A WORD FROM PASTOR TIM

A Word from Tim

As you read this we are approaching the first Sunday in October. That means:

Celebrating “World Wide Communion Sunday”

Receiving our annual “Peacemaking Offering”

Celebrating a youth baptism Hearing Jesus on “Fasting” in the Sermon

on the Mount This month also brings with it things to pray for. They include:

The elders’ composing a budget for 2015 The beginnings of our Stewardship season

to fund that budget The beginning of a new ministry to 3rd-5th

graders (Oct 3) A family movie night (Oct 25) Ongoing ministry with youth

. . . just to name a few! Personally, but also in your name, I will be heading to LAX after worship on October 5th, bound for Turkey. You recall the Turkish Pastor, Ramazan Arkan, whom a number of you met last May at the home of Gary and Patty McCaughan. I’ll be leading a retreat for his leadership team which serves the Antalya Evangelical Church, Oct 8-10, near Antalya, Turkey. See their church website to get a feel for the group – http://www.antalyaevangelicalchurch.com . I’ll be gone two Sundays, but you’ll be treated to good preaching from Jerry Scott and Laura Terasaki. And we will most likely be saying goodbye to

And we will most likely be saying goodbye to Talip and Christal Peshkepia on October 19th, too! They’ve been such a timely blessing while Lizzy has been on maternity leave. Make a point to reach out and thank them! Saying goodbye to the Peshkepia’s, of course, means we will be seeing Lizzy and Ian Redford back with us in worship leadership! That’s the good news. Pray for them as they transition from a baby-focused home life back to duties and life at FPC . . . with baby in tow! How exciting! As the weather cools and the rain considers returning to our dry land, pray for an even greater watering of our souls as we look to the one who sends rain of every kind on a drought stricken state and on thirsty worshippers, as well. Pastor Tim

Notes

Your Pastor Nominating Committee (PNC) members include Lillan

Alfaro, Shelly Diaz, Michael Duron, Ian Redford, Eric Ruckman,

Jerry Scott, Eric Stender, Rosa Torres and Karen Trejo. Our

Presbytery Committee on Ministry Liaison is Rev. Sarah McCurdy

from Morningside Presbyterian Church. The PNC has completed

the Ministry Information Form (MIF), which serves as a position,

church and community description for our Pastor Candidates. The

MIF has been approved by our Session and by the Los Ranchos

Presbytery Committee on Ministry. It is now in our

denomination’s Church Leadership Connection system, available

for interested Pastor candidates to review. We have received

over 130 applications, Personal Information Forms (PIF), which

serves as a Pastor’s resume, and begun our search process.

Please continue to pray for our work and that God will lead us to

the person He chooses to lead our congregation as its next

Pastor.

PEACEMAKING The General Assembly has affirmed in “Peacemaking: The

Believers’ Calling” that God’s peace giving in a broken

and insecure world is central to the message of the

gospel. Therefore, people of faith engage in

Peacemaking, not as a peripheral activity but as an

integral part of their Congregational life and mission.

Our Church has signed the “Commitment to

Peacemaking”. We have our Commitment from General

Assembly in the Peppertree Room under glass next to

Our Old Bible in the glass case.

Please take time to have a look and

Just a reminder that Children's Sunday School is now in session. Children meet

downstairs (for grades K-5) and in the upper room (for middle school and high school students). We look forward to

working with your children. We have also returned to our children's worship

schedule. This program is designed for children preschool through fifth grade and

helps our children understand the components of worship so that they can participate more fully once they are in middle school. Middle school children should remain upstairs for worship.

Contact Donna Huff or Cynthia Stender if you have any questions.

This fall we will be handing out Bibles to our third grade children. We don't want to miss anyone.

Please contact Donna Huff or Cynthia Stender if you have a third grader.

YOUTH GROUP

UPDATE

Summer was full of fun for the Youth

group! We had many activities that gave

our youth the opportunity to interact with

one another and apply what they learned

from the scriptures. We want to thank the

parents who got involved and participated

by preparing meals, providing rides and

chaperoning to camp and outings like the

Harvest Crusade and Beach Day. We also

want to thank the members of the session

and all our church members for their

wonderful support and encouragement!

Our youth is now actively participating in

our Sunday’s services with Kids of the

Kingdom, prayers of the people, praying

for our offerings as well as collecting the

offering. They obviously understand that

they are an important part of our

congregation. When you get a chance,

approach them and let them now how

important their decisions are to our

church. We will continue with our Weekly

Bible study session. Please continue to

keep the Youth in your prayers.

Major Blessing and Happy Autumn to you

all!

“The hearT of The MaTTer”

2014 Stewardship Program

“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

Matt 6:21

We are on the threshold of our future ministry at First Presbyterian

Church of Downey. The Session has confirmed the “What’s Next”

Congregational Study program goals and priorities. The Pastor

Nominating Committee is hard at work seeking, with God’s guidance our

new pastor. 2015 will be a pivotal year for us at FPC.

But with every dream, with every vision, there is a practical side. How do

we provide adequate resources to do what God has called us to do? This

is the heart of the matter for our 2014 stewardship effort.

November will be Stewardship month. During November you will

receive a stewardship letter and your pledge card. Our hope is that you

will have been praying about what you can do next year. Stewardship

Sunday is November 23, where you will have an opportunity to present

your pledge for 2015. Your Session will then confirm or amend the

ministry plan for 2015 based upon the pledges received..

We have some challenges in 2015. We would like to fully fund our

Ministry Plan, which includes the compensation for the new pastor,

provide resources for a dynamic children’s and youth ministry, and

continue our many programs, such as the Spanish Bible Study, Adult

Sunday School and our mission and outreach programs. The heart of the

matter is this – if we are to move forward in 2015, we need your help and

support!

So for 2015, please join me in doing a little bit more…a little bit

more praying, a little bit more studying of God’s Word, a little bit

more of serving where God calls us to serve, and a little bit more

giving as we work to do what God has called us to do.

19 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where

moth and rust[g] consume and where thieves break in and

steal; 20 but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven,

where neither moth nor rust[h] consumes and where thieves

do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there

your heart will be also.” Matt6:19-21
