OUT WITH THE OLD, IN WITH THE NEW

Pick the new hats! 11 were washed and kept as 'spares', and 80 were thrown away! The kids look great!!

Attention all Students with a Green Thumb!

It is that time of year again when we ask any interested

students if they would like to look after a portion of school

property – in the shape of a garden bed! Instruction sheets

on how to apply can be collected from the office.

Applications close on Thursday, 15th February (Week 3).

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

As we begin 2018, I look excitedly at what we do well here at WLPS. We have a

consistent staff and reliable structures here at WLPS. That surely contributes to

better care and service of students. We have academic programs across the school to

ensure students develop in the critical areas of literacy and numeracy, and there is

steadiness from one class to another. We have play based learning and environmental

investigation which starts our students on the right path to social learning – how to work

in groups, how to work as a team; how to solve problems together.

Grit and Grace Grit is a positive psychology term, which we are focussing on this year in learning week. It is the ability to

persevere and be committed to seeing a task through to an endpoint. It is a resilience that comes from:

Having a growth mindset that mistakes are an essential part of learning and are OK.

Being passionate about your task.

Ask your child about GRIT as we go through the first 2 weeks of school!

Adam Borgas

Parent Reps on School Council This year we have two

vacancies on school council

for parent representatives. If

you are passionate about

our school, you may be just the person

we need on school council! Included is

a nomination form to nominate parent

members. Fill in the details and return

to Adam Borgas by the 9th February!

Welcome New Students We welcome our new

students for 2018: in the Year

6/7 class we have Harley, in

the Year 3/4 class Cooper

and in the F/1 class Amarlee, Isla, Lyra,

Caleb, Bryan and Eli. We welcome you

all into our community, and know that

you will find care and support at WLPS!

Valuing Safe Communities Wednesday, 7th February at

4:00 - 5.15pm in Week 2,

Adam Borgas will be running

Valuing Safe Communities. This is a 11/4

hour workshop that we require any new

parents to complete before going on

camps or helping out at school. If you

can attend, please contact the office.

Student Wellbeing As a follow on from last year at

WLPS, staff are surveying

students about their wellbeing.

This is to assist us in providing for

our student’s needs as best we can.

Thank you to Sandie Canney, who is

leading in this area for our staff.

Uniform – from the hat down On Monday, students were

given a new hat in exchange

for their old one. They learned

about respect for their school

uniform, and how wearing their school

uniform is a sign of respect towards their

themselves, their families, the school and

each other. The wearing of school

uniform was highlighted as a strength of

WLPS by parents in our strategic planning

last year, and so this year I am ensuring

(as a part of the principal’s job) that we

are adhering to school uniform.

Learning Weeks The first two weeks at WLPS are

known as our learning weeks.

This is where we learn about

Who We Are as learners and as

a community. Students learn about how

their brains work to comprehend infor-

mation and be creative, as well as talk

about the best conditions for learning.

Schoolhouse (Piano) Mrs O’Brien is living in the schoolhouse for

the first 6 months of the year, while we

further investigate and plan for the use

of this space as a part of the school’s

masterplan.

Piano lessons will also be located

in the schoolhouse during the day.

Students are to enter in the front

door, where chairs are located to wait

quietly for the beginning of the lesson.

We thank Mrs O’Brien for her willingness

to share this space while she is at work!

Welcome to everyone this New Year.

The power of ‘I can” is what God promises to us all if we depend on Him; a most appropriate thought for

this new school year: may it be a year of peace, joy and wonderful surprises for all of us.

God bless, Moira
