Newsletter 27th March 2017 Term 1 Week 10
Assistant Principal’s Report
This will be my first turn to do the Assistant Principal’s Report for our school newsletter. I will be in the role of Relieving
Assistant Principal for semester one. We have lots of wonderful things happening over the next two weeks, to end what
has been a fantastic term.
Out of Uniform Day
This Friday, 31st March we are having an Out of Uniform Day. Instead of a gold coin donation, students are asked to bring
a chocolate for the Lob-a-Choc stall at the Year 6 mini-fete. Students need to wear sensible closed in shoes/joggers and
their school hats.
Grandparents’ Day
We are celebrating Grandparents’ Day next Tuesday (4th April). Activities will commence at 10:00am in your grandchild's
classroom. This will be followed by a picnic lunch at 11:00am in the playground. Don’t forget to bring picnic rugs, chairs
and of course, some lunch! Tea, coffee and cakes will be available for purchase from the canteen.
Easter Hat Parade
Our Easter Hat Parade is on after Grandparents’ Day celebrations, Tuesday 4th April. The K-6 parade will be held under
the Primary COLA starting at 12 noon. All K-2 children will be supplied with a cardboard strip to make their hat. Howev-
er, Year 3-6 students are asked to bring in a sheet of cardboard as an alternative hat to decorate. It would be greatly ap-
preciated if parents are able to send in a bag of crafty items to assist in decorating the hats. Teachers will notify you if they
need helpers in their classroom to make the hats.
Year 6 Mini-fete
The year 6 Mini-fete is on Friday 7th April. Please see the information provided by
Miss Patrick in the newsletter.
I look forward to seeing you at these wonderful up-coming events.
Regards,
Maxine Morton
Library We’ve had a great term in the library. We have been getting to know our new
interactive library system and doing lots of borrowing and reading.
Next term will be very busy, especially during Education Week. The Tuesday of this
week (May 23) will be the first day of our annual Book Fair. Also on this day our
annual Book Character Parade will be held. This is the parade we normally have in
Book Week (August). This year it is happening in Education Week, so we all need to
have our costumes ready by then.
Book Fair: Tuesday May 23 & Wednesday May 24.
Book Character Parade: Tuesday May 23
We will confirm times closer to the day.
I hope you all enjoy the upcoming school holidays, have time to enjoy a good book, and have brilliant ideas about book
character costumes.
See you next term!

UNSW Education Assessments Reminder that the payment for 2017 International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) is due this
Wednesday (29th March). These are optional assessments for students. A note was sent home earlier this term with
further information and can also be found on our website for further information.
School Banking There will be a brief information session held at the next Infants Assembly which will take place on Thursday 30th
March from 2:00pm in the Hall regarding School Banking. A representative from the Commonwealth Bank will also be
available after the assembly until 3:15pm should you have any queries regarding school student banking.
125th Birthday Celebrations As part of our birthday celebrations, we aim to publish a commemorative book. Past pupils, friends and parents are
invited to send in stories and memories of WBPS. These need to be send in as soon as possible. We also seek volun-
teers with publishing and design layout skills. All advice would be appreciated. Contributions can be left at the office
or emailed to the school.
Also remember to save the date of Saturday 28th October for our Anniversary Ball. More details to follow.

P&C Fundraiser Warners Bay P & C have formed a Fundraising Committee, which consists of parents from the school community. We
are working mums and are excited to be a part of this adventure. We have created a Facebook page, which all are wel-
come to join. The page is Warners Bay P & C Fundraising Committee 2017.
Many fundraising ideas have already been raised and we welcome any new idea. Our goal is to create fundraising op-
portunities for the students, parents and families collectively. Our first official fundraising opportunity will be a Holiday
Movie Screening. Details are attached to the Newsletter, however, for those who missed it.
Movie: Smurfs
Time: 10am
Cinema: EVENT Cinemas Glendale
Date: Tuesday April 11th
Cost: $20 includes movie ticket, lollies and a popper (money to be sent
to school in a labelled envelope)
We hope to see many of you at this, so we can introduce ourselves. As the holi-
days approach we are preparing for the Mother’s Day Stall with the help of Meredith. Once again we would like to
thank Meredith for her help in this transition.
Happy fundraising,
Elissa, Kristyn, Michelle, Stephanie, Mandy and Leah (Fundraising committee)
Starstruck This year’s Starstruck is shaping up to be a fantastic spectacle as always. Tickets go on sale from April 6th if you are
interested in going along to the show.
Canteen Thank you to our volunteers who have kept our Canteen open during Term 1. The roster is now available for Term 2
and we would welcome any new helpers that may be able to add their name to the roster.
A reminder also that our Canteen does not open on Wednesdays. Please remember to send in lunch for your child on
Wednesday as we are not able to process lunch orders or make counter sales.
Statement of Account Term 2 invoices are being sent home today to each family. A statement of account is also included which will list any
outstanding fees for term 1as well as the Term 2 charges.

ANZAC Day service Ms Patrick will meet school leaders and any other students interested in attending the Dawn
Service at Speers Point on ANZAC Day. Meet opposite the LMCC chambers at Speers Point at
5:20am in full school uniform.
There will also be a servie at Allambee Park Valentine at 10:00am. Interested students are to
assemble at 9:40am near Jackson Lane for the short march to Allambee Park. The Lions Club of Valentine will be of-
fering their traditional Anzac Day morning tea afterwards.
NAPLAN Naplan is taking place in term 2 from May 9th-11th for our current year 3 & year 5 students. Please see the flyer for
more information regarding NAPLAN.
Kindy News Hi and welcome to the last Newsletter for Term One. Wow, the children have nearly completed their first term of
their schooling! They have worked so hard and achieved so much in such a short time. All are becoming very inde-
pendent and enjoying exploring and learning new things (although some need a little more encouragement than others
at times).
Year Six Mini-Fete
This will be held on the last day of this term and helps Year 6 raise money for their excursion to Canberra and also
for their gift which they present to the school. The fete is run by the Year 6 children for the rest of the children at the
school. Year 6 are our Kindy’s buddies and they are so caring, helping the children with their purchases and helping
with the games.
As a word of warning, some children love the “Ghost House” but the little ones are discouraged unless they are very
confident with this sort of thing. Please talk this over with your child before the day. The children are asked to bring a
labelled enviro bag in which to place their purchases and a purse or wallet with no more than $10 preferably in coins.
It is a fun day that also teaches the children some wonderful life lessons. All the teachers are on hand to assist the chil-
dren where necessary.
Grandparents Day/ Easter Hat Parade
We will start our day in front of the Kindergarten rooms. The children will come out and stand on one
of the four chalk-drawn circles where they will perform for our Grandparents. We ask that these cir-
cles are kept free as the children move into the area. They will perform for their Grandparents and
then hopefully join us for a tour of their grandchild’s classroom. At lunchtime all are invited to share a
picnic lunch so bring a rug and hopefully the weather will be kind to us. After lunch the school will as-
semble under the Primary COLA to parade our Easter hats.
All are welcome to stay/join us for this event. We will have made our hats at school earlier with some help from our
Year 6 Buddies (this is always a very exciting time). Thank you to all people who have made donations of craft materi-
als to enhance our amazing hats.
What’s Happening in KW?
Each morning in KW we introduce the new sound for the day and then we move into Reading and Writing Groups.
Wow have we learnt so many new activities in these groups! We play sound and word games, use the Comm box for
online activities, practice writing words and letters, use magnetic letters and lots, lots more. We would love you to
join us and see firsthand how clever KW have become and help us learn even more.
Wishing everyone a wonderful chocolate filled Easter and a safe and happy holiday. Looking forward to an exciting Term 2 starting on the 26th April.

Stage Two News
A huge thank you to all the parents who came to our parent-teacher interviews in Week 6. It was a great
opportunity to meet you again and find out a little more about your child.
Thank you also to the parents who have supported the Life Education Excursion which is held this week.
This is a valuable excursion in supporting our Personal Development and Health units taught in class.

What’s happening in 4H?
Just keep breathing, we are almost there!
With two weeks left, we in 4H are absolutely flat out working hard. You might have seen 4H singing their 4 and 5 times
tables on our Class Dojo page, our class have rocked out to these for the past few weeks and know them back to front!
4H have been working on Creative Writing, even creating our own narrative title Danger in Dangerfield Jungle. Our narrative
involves a young character that lives in Dangerfield Jungle, who contains the curious ability to speak to animals. It’s a great
read!
Life Education
Last week, stage 2 travelled to visit Healthy Harold. I’m proud to say the students behaved wonderfully and a great time was
had by all.
Stage Three News Congratulations to all of our 64 wonderful Year 6 students who are busy working and preparing for the Mini-fete which is
to be held on the last day of this term. Thanks also to the Yr 6 parents who are helping with stall preparations. Please re-
member, that if you have anything to send in for Trash n Treasure, tombola wheel or any of the other stalls we are happy to
receive donations whenever it best suits families. Another Mini-fete newsletter with reminders will be sent home this week.
Don’t forget that it’s Out of Uniform – ‘bring a chocolate as the fine’ this Friday 31st March – to assist us with the Lob-
a-choc stall at Mini-fete.
All of Years 5 & 6 should now have made a deposit to secure a place in this year’s Stage 3 excursion to Canberra. If you
have not done so, the deposit will need to be paid by the last day of this term. The Term 2 invoice will contain the second
payment amount and the final payment will be due in Term 3, as we depart for Canberra on Day 1 of Term 4. If you have
any concerns or enquiries, please contact Ms Patrick, as she has all the details and information relating to the trip.
Grandparent’s Day, Easter Hat Parade, ANZAC Service, Easter Scripture, School X-Country and the Mini
Fete are all on in Week 11. Yes, we will all need a holiday after that week. What a busy week it will be! We hope to catch
up with many of our families to share in these annual celebrations. In particular, Stage 3 is hoping to see many grandparents
visit our rooms on Tuesday 4th April. We also hope that the grandparents may find the time to locate some old photos,
books or artefacts that they can share with their grandchildren’s classes OR perhaps they may be brave enough to speak to
the children in our ‘yarning circle’ for a few minutes about what school life and growing up was like for them and compare it
to today.
Easter Hat preparations will take place at the following times for each Stage 3 class. Please ensure your child has a col-
lection of items and a base for a hat to decorate on the day. Year 6 will once again this year be going down to assist their
Kindergarten Buddies with the decorating of their hats.

What’s happening in 6P?
Over the past 4 weeks, 6P have been working on writing narratives. We have made particular effort to write ‘Sizzling Starts’
to kick off our writing. The children have worked on 40 different topics and learnt how to begin at the point of action or
excitement and get straight to the part of the story which is intended to ‘hook’ in their readers. Each time they have a quick
‘whole class’ discussion of possible tangents they could take, and then they have 3 minutes to come up with great ‘bait’ for
their readers. We have now moved on to select one of their favourite sizzling starts to work on building into a full blown
story. During the year, I will endeavour to include examples from every member of our class in one of the 6P newsletter
items. Below are examples from the first 12 members of our class. They are….sizzling!
TOPIC: What Would you do for a Million Dollars?
My knees are shaking and my tummy is lurching. “What have I gotten myself into?” I ask myself with a sense of
doubt. “Robbing a bank for one million dollars… is it really worth it!” by Grace Thornton

TOPIC: My Teacher is a Robot
As she shoots laser beams out of her eyes, I suddenly notice an off switch on the back of her neck. I run
over to her and reach for her neck, all for the sake of humanity. I can’t believe it! My teacher truly is a ro-
bot! by Maxwell Holland
TOPIC: The Hidden Door
Bang! The trapdoor slams shut and we are constantly falling down, down, down. We travel into a deep
blackness. I keep calling to Kelly but no sound comes back. I cannot tell how long we have been falling but
it seems like forever. Finally we land and I can’t believe my eyes. by Lily McHarg
TOPIC: Run!
Mum calls out to me and I answer her. She tells me it is time to take me to the doctors. I tell her to close her
eyes and count to 10. She closes her eyes and starts to count. I run! by Blain Simpson
TOPIC: Picture Stimulus
As I walk through the snow, I see two little penguins waddling along. They are so cute! I rush over to
them but just as I do, I hear a cracking sound, as the thin ice beneath me breaks and I fall into an icy
cave. I hear a growling noise behind me and I realise … I am not alone! by Adam Blackie
TOPIC: The Hill
It loomed forebodingly in the distance. The sun was setting and so it appeared as if the shadows
were dancing. I sighed and lowered my binoculars. It may be haunted but I fear it is the only chance I
have to survive. I head over towards the house on my skis; unaware of the two small eyes watching
me… by Charlotte Couch
As we were unpacking the car on our holiday, I ask mum if I can go to the edge of the hill and have a
look. She says yes and so I race up and peer over the hill. While I am peering over, I see the most
beautiful lake I’ve ever seen. It is absolutely breathtaking! by Ruby Gray
TOPIC: Trapped!
The audience cheers. You know, even though I’ve done this like a million times before, I still get nerv-
ous. I walk onto the stage as the crowd roars loudly. The humungous steel box lowers over my body.
Hunks of metal cover my face and make it hard to breathe, but I’ve been doing this for a while now, so I
hardly notice. It’s weird, I’m trapped but I don’t even care. by Maddison Farley
TOPIC: The Key
I’m walking around the back of my house. This is the first time I’ve been allowed to walk home
alone. The journey was okay but for the whole time, I was thinking about the secret goblin door
under the house. I push the barrier of oak wood out of the way and hold the key firmly in my
hand. It is a shiny black key with a ruby encrusted top. I cautiously slide the key into the door. I
slam open the door and immediately I am pulled into the dark abyss on the other side. by Jayden
Peter
TOPIC: Jump
I launch myself out of the plane with a smile on my face…wait…I am actually screaming my head off.
All I can see below me are large paddocks. I think of the smell of the delicious barbecue at the end
but then I think…I’m still falling thousands of kilometres down and without a parachute! by Jett Tully
TOPIC: Picture Stimulus
I am on a jet ski and on the biggest mission in the world. I am setting off to take down the criminal,
Jimmy Jumper. What an evil little boy he is! I take off my jacket and throw myself onto the dangling
ladder. Just as I latch on, I slip… by Tiernan Mulhall
TOPIC: Picture Stimulus
As I bend down and peer into the glass jar, my eyes are just amazed. There, inside, is a tiny girl.
At first I think that it must be a doll and I hate those things! But then…I see a movement from
within. She is holding up a sign that says, ‘Help me!’ by Monique Portelli
