Our Classes at K280 celebrated Harvest Day with breakfast and lunch. It was a way for our families to come together and celebrate for all the many things for which we are thankful. Here are some classes we visited.

Bring on the Cool…..The “Cool” is here! Finally families can enjoy the Cool Culture program by visiting uncharted places throughout the city! So many different journeys to embark on with the whole family and this year we have introduced the Cool Culture Passport Program.

The school year is in full swing and what better way to get the year started and the holidays rolling than with your Cool Culture pass.

In October, parents and staff of K280 and PS10 had the opportunity to apply for a wonderful program called

Cool Culture. Cool Culture is a unique program offered to city children of Pre-k & kindergarten and their families. This program enables them to participate in the arts, and visit museums, zoos and cultural institutions throughout the city.

There is so much to explore when it comes to New York City! I have lived here all of my life and haven’t seen or heard of half of the places being offered this year through our Cool Culture partners. Cool Culture is a

great match for K280 because the journey is such an integral part of our inquiry based program. When students are out on neighborhood journeys they discover things that can potentially become the spark to an inquiry in the class. As it relates to Cool Culture we want to involve

families who are not able to be in the classroom to volunteer or go on walks/journeys to be able to replicate this process with their children on journeys at home.

Coming in late December or early January 2017, the release of the K280 website (powered by Weebly) will enable parents to get comprehensive information on the K280 school community at the reach of a smartphone or computer. The link to the website will be released once we are officially ready to go live!

The website will have an announcement section filled with information that parents need to know from all areas of the school including our cluster areas, such as the art studio, science lab, music room, inquiry piazza, and gymnasium.

The website is also a great way to reduce our paper trail. Being a Zero Waste School we want to preserve our environment and reduce our waste. By using the direct email and now the website where you will also be able to download forms you will need and flyers, we can limit our copying while still keeping you in the know. The goal eventually will be to fully green! Keeps an eye out on updates hitting your child’s yellow folders soon!

If you feel you are not getting email notifications from the school, please contact your classroom parent or the parent coordinator Mr. Josh so he

can add you to ensure you get all the information you need to be informed here at K280.

SLEEPING BEAUTY…….

This student participates in Sleeping Beauty.

It’s balloon time! Yes, boys, girls, and adults- its time to cheer and laugh and smile and be a kid at heart because its Mr. Goowins who came to see us!

November 18, 2016 Mr. Goowins from Goowin’s Balloowins put on a fantastic show

for our students at K280 and by far it was one of the best shows for children I have ever seen.

As I was recording I couldn’t help but laugh at the commentary. The children all wanted to make the debut of their lives. Mr. Goowins allowed students to partake in three small shows of the classics told in his own unique version and funny they were- The Three Little Pigs,

Sleeping Beauty, and The Farmer and his Wife

This amazing show has been a wonderful tradition for all of our students of the PS10/K280 community. We are looking forward to next year when we hopefully get to see him for more laughs and stories.

Welcome from this year’s K280 PTA Core Committee!

On behalf of the 2016 – 2017 K280 PTA Core Committee, we wanted to tell you all how excited we are about the year ahead and to thank you all for your donations and participation in our Character Day Bake Sale, Food Drive, and Lice Out initiative. Our Bake Sale and Election Day coffee fundraiser raised nearly $2,000 and we received enough contributions to cover at least three (3) visits from Lice Out this year so we’re off to a great start! None of this would be possible without your participation so thank you for helping us support public education at K280!

We would like to take this opportunity to introduce our K280 PTA Core Committee for 2016 – 2017—please feel free to email us at

This December please donate to the K280 Family Giving Campaign!Over the last three years, K280 has grown from 120 students to more than 400! The need to support our teachers and students has never been greater -- that is why we are launching the very first K280 Family Giving Campaign!

Our goal this December is to raise $10,000 -- an average donation of about $25 per family – all of which would be spent this school year on supplies and programs that still need to be funded beyond the school budget. Your contributions will help fund those projects, which will benefit our children as well as future classes. Last year’s K280 families worked hard to raise funds for the school and their generosity has enabled our children to enjoy:

● A brand new and fully furnished library stocked with age appropriate books

● ‘Kimochi’ Dolls in each class to help children manage and understand their emotions

● A safe, onsite playground specially equipped for the children

Because the K280 Parent Committee is a standing committee of the PS10 PTA, a registered 501(c)3 charity, all contributions are 100% tax deductible. Give whatever makes sense for your family, but it is our hope that all families will participate. No contribution is too small or too large, and no family is required to give.

● Vote on use of funds to buy 400 new safety vests for classes

● Suggest other ideas for use of funds raised

Holiday PTA Foley Firs Tree Fundraiser……..If you are planning to purchase a Christmas tree this holiday season, Foley Firs is donating $10 for every tree sold to our PTA. Just mention our school when you purchase your tree and sign the school’s fundraiser

list and our PTA will receive the donation.

Foley Firs offer free delivery and will gladly set the tree up, provided the tree stand is in place. Pass this message along to family and friends (even if they do not have children in the school) and they too can purchase a tree towards our school. We can also strongly encourage spreading the word electronically by linking their website or facebook page to your friends via social media.

Foley Firs will contribute a personal donation if there are more than 30 participants that mention our school. This donation is 50% of our total amount of funds raised if we reach over 60 participants.

Inquiry/Journey: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. Ms. Claudia & Ms. Alice Class 229

‘We have been discussing ways that we can reuse objects for fun. Luckily (for us), when we went on a journey to the library to find books about reduce, reuse, and recycle we found a bin filled with recyclable items that we can build and play with.

We had so much fun playing with empty bottles and bottle caps. We used our imagination and turned them into rockets, buildings and even a pot of soup!

We are now collecting objects to bring into our sand table and block area! ‘

Kindness Day Ms. Elysia & Ms. Sharmala Class 175B

Class 175B celebrated kindness day by distributing shapes of kindness to teachers and staff throughout the school community. We made a special visit to Mrs. Marlene and Principal Scott to deliver our kindness shapes! Each child sported a decorated headband with words stating what each of them does to be kind. “I like to help my friends open things at breakfast, I offer” was a daily act of kindness from one of our students!

Our K280 classes are on a journey to help those less fortunate throughout the community of K280 and Park Slope. As of this week notices went home to ask families of our school community to assist the spirit of giving event.

As you consider your holiday gifts and giving ideas, if you can also consider a used coat or toy that you may not be needing or that pair of winter boots or winter gear. Let the Coat Winter gear & Toy drive begin!
