Dear Parents and Carers,

Vision: Together We Grow Pedagogical Principles:

Reaching Beyond Learning Together Being Curious

Dear Parents and Carers,

I have been enjoying visiting home rooms during this past week and experiencing numerous ways in which our children and teachers have been ‘Reaching Beyond’ in the learning.

One such example in Sarah DiMauro’s 6/7 home room was during their focus on Mathematics Investigations. The children were in fact ‘In the Pit’ or in a challenging space where they needed to find a way of moving forward. They were investigating the Fibonacci sequence. Through thoughtful questioning from Sarah, discussion with their learning partner and access to various resources to try different strategies, they were able to reach beyond what they thought was their limit with the number sequence to the point where two of the students came to the office the next day excited about the fact they were up to numbers in the trillions with such accurate recording and understanding. This joy and excitement came from the fact that they faced a challenge and worked with their peers and teacher to find a way forward ‘out of the pit’ as we would say. There is nothing like achieving a new discovery and feeling the satisfaction of knowing you can reach beyond what you thought was your limit. This is all about having a growth mindset. I see many examples of this great learning happening across Stage 3 and other age groups across our wonderful school and we look forward to sharing more of these with you at our Expos and through the SeeSaw app.

At our AGM on Wednesday 21st March we look forward to sharing more with you about the teaching and learning happening at Galilee revolving around our vision and the three pedagogical principles named at the beginning of this article. The evening will begin with wine and cheese served from 6.45pm before the meeting begins at 7.00pm. There is an opening for a parent representative on our council, so if you are interested please make contact with our front office staff and they can provide you with further information about this role as well as completing the nomination form at the end of the newsletter. We look forward to seeing you there!

Parents and Friends Co-ordinating Group Our PFCG met for the first time on Tuesday to plan for the exciting year ahead of continuing to build community, friend raising and fundraising to support the school’s strategic work.

The PFCG are looking forward to raising funds to support the teaching and resourcing of STEM programs such as robotics across the school. The PFCG know that many parents would love to be able to support our children through the PFCG work during the course of the year but you may not be able to make

NEWSLETTER 2018 WEEK 5 TERM 1the meetings. That is ok! Whether you are able to attend meetings, help at a particular event during the year or contribute something from home such as making phone calls to local businesses, covering books etc all of these contributions add up and make a difference.

The first two events for our PFCG are the BBQ for the Election Booth at our school on Saturday March 17th and Sports Day on Friday 6th April. If you can spare some time on Saturday 17th March to support our BBQ, please keep an eye out for the information and sign up link we will share with you. Your help, no matter how much time you have available will be greatly appreciated. This is a great opportunity to support your children’s learning and spread the word about the great things about our community with the many people who will be voting on the day. The next meeting will be focusing on Sports Day and will be held on Tuesday 13th March at 7.00pm in the staff room. All PFCG meetings are open to all parents and carers at Galilee.

Arriving and Leaving School Safely

We support you and your children to arrive and leave the school each day ready to engage in lots of wonderful learning together. It is important that we all play a part in teaching our children how to arrive and leave school safely by using the school crossings, footpaths, driving safely and being patient when using the carpark.

I have noticed many near misses as well as some crashes at the intersection of Quinliven and How Rds during the week and also on the weekend. The roads are not places for great risks to be taken so I ask you all to help create a safe environment by:

• Driving without using your mobile phones • Using the two school crossings to enter school • Driving through the carpark at 5kph • Parking away from the exit to the carpark • Parking in designated areas, not on the verge

blocking access and visibility

On behalf of Jodie, the staff and myself I would like to offer my thanks to you all for your support during the first 5 weeks of this term. Your support at home or in person at school makes a wonderful difference to the learning and development of your child. Research shows time and again that the positive relationship between home and school has a significant impact on your child’s learning and development.

Together We Grow.

Yours truly, Anthony Garton Co-Principal

Fair Funding for Catholic Schools As we head towards a State Election, parents are encouraged to consider how each political party is promising to support our Catholic schools. Until recently – Catholic schools in South Australia received the lowest level of funding in the country.

In November, the State Government announced that it would increase recurrent funding to our schools. This equates to a $14.3 million increase in 2018 and brings us into much closer alignment with the amount Catholic schools receive in other parts of the country. The State Government also announced a capital grant of $5.5 million indexed annually to CPI.

While this is good news for our schools, there is much more that can be done to ensure our schools receive adequate support.

You can read more at: www.cesa.catholic.edu.au/news/fair-funding-campaign. We have sent letters to all of our local candidates and we encourage you to do the same. You can contact Natalie or Lana and they will provide you with a personalised letter to send.

Growing seeds of love

This week Mrs Forbes and Campbell’s learning community remind us that we are now in the time of Lent. A time to stop and think – how am I going? Have I been kind or showed care to somebody recently? Lent is a time for growing. We pray we can create a garden of love and peace in our hearts this Lent. During community prayer they used the parable of the mustard seed (Matthew 13:31-32) to teach us about growth and love. This story represents how great things can grow from small beginnings. The mustard seed represents a seed of love in people’s hearts and even though something is so small that slowly overtime amazing things can grow. When we are caring and generous to each other it shows this love growing in our hearts.

Ava: When we remember we are a hands-off school we grow in respect.

Christian: When we try to solve problems together we grow in learning.

Laila: When we listen to one another we grow in forgiveness.

Milly: When we let people join in we grow in friendship.

Esther: When we spend time in quiet we grow in peace.

Respectful Agreements

Establishing a shared set of expectations or rules is an essential step in creating and maintaining a peaceful community. You begin by envisioning what the ideal community would look like and then brainstorming the behaviours or agreements all members of the community will need to help maintain the environment you envisioned. This list of agreements or rules can be posted up as a learning community agreement and becomes a working document that will serve as a guide towards the goals and ideals. At Galilee our practices are based upon an agreed understanding of respect. The 5 dimensions of respect are (Homeroom Agreements):

1. Respect for self 2. Respect for children 3. Respect for adults 4. Respect for learning 5. Respect for environment

Look in your child’s home room and you will see how each community are working towards these goals. Here are some thoughts about respect from Mrs Emberton’s and Mrs Guilfolye’s learning community:

Dylan – We need to use respectful language otherwise we won’t have friends.

Louie – We have these agreements to respect so we can all get along.

Ruby S – We can all get along and live together as a community.

Lucy, Olivia and Oriah – Respect for self is about having high expectations and being the best, you can be.

Alana and Emily – Respect for learning is so we can all learn in a variety of ways.

Azi, Finnigan and Hugo – Respect for others, don’t pass judgement on others or make fun of them and their efforts.
