Children at Willow Brook Primary met one their heroes when acclaimed writer SF Said visited on World Book Day 1st March

2018. Even though the country was under the firm grip of snow and ice, nothing was going to stop SF Said from visiting Willow Brook- not even The Beast from the East!

The critically acclaimed author of Varjak Paw, The Outlaw Varjak and Phoenix spoke to pupils about his writing journey.

The London based author, told the children how he began as an author. Inspired by his own cat, he wrote Varjak Paw, however, his book was rejected 90 times by publishers. He talked about being resilient and not giving up as he finally found a publisher willing to publish his first book.

He talked about how he learned the importance of crafting the skill of writing through editing a number of times and why resilience was important.

Children listened to him intently and shared their goals and ambitions. The author signing event prompted further discussions about books. SF Said has published three books so far, with a fourth due for release soon.

In this Newsletter, we are considering the concept of Fairness. Children often have a strong opinion on what is ‘fair’ and ‘not fair.’ The idea of fairness is an essential concept for moral and political thinking. We are very sensitive to acts of unfairness in our own lives.

Discuss: ‘The teacher gives everyone in class one hours homework every day.’ • Is this fair?• What if someone is cleverer than someone else?• What if someone has less free-time than someone else?• What about the child who has to care for a family member?• What if someone has a computer and someone doesn’t?• What if someone’s parent is a teacher?• There is an overlap between the concept of fairness and justice.

You can give your child different scenarios to consider what is fair or not fair. Try to get them to give reasons for their response.

Here are a few scenarios to get started:• A starving person steals some food• A hungry person steals some food• Some people have many homes while others are homeless• Male athletes get paid more than female athletes• A school makes sure everyone wins a prize on sports day
