Why the Slash and not Slashers???, well after a horrid run with players last season and making the final, this season was even worse player wise, and not once were we able to fill a full team that included a sub. So that was 15 games with no subs, which made Bruce a very fit man…. We lost Torvill and Dean (Stuart & Kate) in the draft and picked up Darren Bain and Nick Burthell. On paper we looked strong but the crystal ball had other ideas. Russell Fraser : Anyone know if he’s visiting the Bermuda Tri-angle??? Kym Serafini : BB had to make way Uni during the winter season Bruce Creed : BB career cruelly cut down by water skiing injury This left us a bare five and our first 8 games consisted of 2 forfeits, and 3 games starting a goal down due to needing a player just to bring us to 6. After round 8, we got Ashleigh to reappear (no mean feat) which meant Bruce was able to show his silky skills on the wing, and really impress in week 13 with 2 goals. By week 11 (and with constant complaining) we finally picked up a new player, Phil, from the Noarlunga ice rink, which made us a team of 7, but other circumstances reduced us back to 6 and we finished the season full of running, or walking, and a place in the 1st semi. In all, a fine effort by the lads, with Nick and Phil improving every week with more games under their belts. Thanks to all who filled in for us, and the referees, and to Wayne/Shane for getting us the extra player. With subs, we will be aiming for a G.F appearance next season. “THE TEAM”

Ash : Mid season pick up, who seems to invent some new rules for keepers and gives the stats people a hard time about how may shots he saves. Kim : Please come back! Bruce C : Rumours have it that he may come back as a ref? Russell : Please come back! Bruce Mc : Keeper/Winger played his guts out for us and then had to play two more games in goals, would love a sub, prob from Subway. Kate / Stuart : The Torvill and Dean of Broomball : Traitors!!! Darren : The heart of the Slashers, never gives up, never stops running, and never complains, if only he could shoot…. Snowie : Season cut short by family commitments after week 10. Sorely missed up front and by the refs. Me : Early season injuries reduced my games until week 7. Tried to keep on the good side of the refs and fire the occasional deflection past Megan, just to hear her scream at her defence. “TEAM PLAYER” Well what a mess… we had no voting due to player absenteeism, so in my capacity as captain I have made the unanimous decision to give the Slashers Team Player to MYSELF.. oops, to DARREN BAIN. Darren played every game, never gave up, never spat the dummy, and plays it hard but fair and never stopped running when most of us were gasping for air. Hopefully the powers that be won’t steal our MVP this season as they did last season… well done Darren… (you owe me a drink).

Hackers Winter 2002

Hackers had a slow start to the season losing the first four games without scoring a goal. After this unpromising start however we started to get a regular team turn up every game and really started to play with some good teamwork. This showed in the results, which after those first four losses we turned around to go on to win or draw the rest of the games in the minor round. I enjoyed the team atmosphere and I think everyone else did as well in what was a great team where everyone was really positive and supportive. Mike was always good at elaborating on my standard half time team plan (score more goals than them) with a more detailed breakdown of tactics as team coach. Kate is developing into a good goal-scoring winger! And Stuart supplied the pace when needed (which is quite a lot). Whilst the rest of the old guys in the team just keep on gasping. The team goalies did a good job all through the season and our thanks go out to all who kept for us during the season (Meagan, Bruce and Adrian). The team in no particular order started with Defence consisting of Brian (how come I get sent off this season) Plush and Keith (soft shot) Thomas who were fantastic in defence all season. Centre was shared by Mike (I’m too old for this) Chartres and Stuart (I don’t always pass to Kate, honest) MacDonald. Playing on Wing was left to Kate (Stuart better pass to me or he’s dead Gummow) and Graham (I’m Captain so Ill play on the Wing) Elix. Here hoping the good guys (Hackers) can beat the bad guys (anyone else) in the final. Cheers Graham Elix

The Bruisers season did not work out as we were hoping for. We came into the season with some confidence on improving from last season and we also recruited Adrian to bolster our attack and add some experience .We started the season with a couple of wins, a lot of draws and then finished with heaps of thrashings from teams that showed no mercy on the weak and mentally fragile. As the season unfolded we struggled to settle into position due to not being able to have our full team each week. Sean Chivers decided to get married and go on a honeymoon and returned with the news that he was retiring. (I thought that’s why we come and played broomball). Adrian was sent to Queensland for two weeks to recruit a quality player but failed to return with the goods. James Chartres was deep in study for a number of weeks to try and raise the IQ of the team and Jean-Marie Hetu was back and forth from numerous destinations around the world for most of the season. Next season the Bruisers are looking for a big improvement and are ready to challenge the other teams to become the summer champions for 2002 I would like to thank Jean-Marie, Shane, Sam, Darren, Adrian, James, Sean, and Meagan (goal keeper) for their sense of humour during a frustrating season and I look forward to next season. Each player decided bruises MVP by voting 3,2,1 each week. This seasons MVP came down to a tie so it was decided in a count back on 1st preference votes. Congratulations to ADRIAN BARRIE. Adrian had a great season despite suffering from a dickie knee and a two week holiday in Queensland (recruiting). Congratulations to Shane Penny for coming a close second. Regards, Craig Barrett

What a strange season this one was, kind of like a Broomball version of the "Celebrity Big Brother" exercise, the team had a different line up every week, which really led me to wonder… We managed to build up an injury list that could have kept a small medical centre in business for the whole winter. Also we were a bit schizo this season - playing like a well-oiled machine one week then like a clapped out pile of crap the next. I reckon the problem is that the later game times made our pub attendance drop a bit this season. The cast in this reality soap opera was… Marita Atwood - This was Marita's second season. Marita is a very gutsy player who will take on anyone but she unfortunately had many work commitments and could only play a handful of games. Pleasingly Marita actually took the trouble to regularly let us know whether she would be able to make it out or not. Bill & Nylie Economou - These guys are just magnificent - when our team structure was crumbling in the mid season Injury fest they just got on with the job, playing both in defensive and attacking roles. Bill still has the loudest voice in the team when the pressure is on, and he lifted us all many times. Nylie has excellent vision on the ice and that uncanny ability to position herself wherever the ball is going to – her efforts in the Prelim Final really put away the Raiders with 2 great goals. Matt Holder - The Dominator returns to Broomball! Matt was a huge asset to the team this season. Everyone knows that Matt has a fearsome shot and huge enthusiasm. But the thing I really noticed about Matt is his excellent tactical understanding of the game and determination to cover the whole centre area of the ice – not just forward of the redline. Tony Howlett - Tony fronted up for his second season determined to continue the good progress made in his first. Then four weeks into the season, as you will all know, he sustained very serious injuries in a work accident. To recover in the time Tony has, is nothing short of miraculous and gives you an idea of what a fine man he is. Gerry McCaffery - Yup, me again. Continued to have fun in attack. Was usually able to say something inspiring at half time, if not, again he would let Shaps talk about the actual match we were playing in. Fred Nash - Phantom Fred had a very big impact in the early games he played for us - his value to his team mates could be measured in that he even went pretty close to winning the team trophy. Unfortunately Fred had an old injury that kept him out for the rest of the season. We are hopeful he will return for summer.

James Poulson - This season was an outstanding effort - James has always had excellent hockey skills and I reckon has been one of the better players in the competition for the last 2 seasons. He has got to feature highly in the MVP's this season. Wayne Ritchie - Mr Reliable, Wayne's high standard of play never falls. He should be knighted for his services in defence. Kim Shapley - Keeps on keeping on. All I can do is regurgitate what has been said about Kim for every season… "excellent", "sublime skills", "On no, his bloody hammy's gone again"… With one addition – “that” shot that Kim fired at Ashleigh in the Elimination final was one of the most terrifying things I have ever seen in a Broomball game - how Ashleigh was able to get up from that amazed me. Like every season our thanks must go to our Goaltenders, Megan & Bruce (and Adrian for a couple of games), to the fellow players who made time available to umpire our games and also to Kerry for scoring/time keeping and now also recording Goal tender stats. Thanks to Sam for collecting the money as well. The team trophy was to be decided by votes after each game (Thanks to Bill & Nylie for taking care of this). The final results were a very even spread of votes amongst all the team, but also revealed a first place tie between two players, both of whom would be most deserving. The captain then made an autocratic decision based on his own criteria and general pig ignorance of the game. Ok, drum roll please - James Poulson is the recipient for his exceptional effort all season. Hope the Grand Final is fun… Gerry McCaffery Captain Destroyer 2002 Winter Season

It’s a long way to the top, even if the point’s ladder has only six rungs. But what does that mean for the Vipers? We can only go in one direction and that’s UP! Winning the coveted Wooden Spoon, the award truly belies the spirit and effort of the Vipers. This being my first time as captain, and my third season in broomball, I was proud to captain a team that never lost its good spirits after losing a game, which unfortunately, was an all to often occurrence. The Vipers showed a proud and noble spirit throughout the season, running fast, playing hard, and often holding off the opposition from scoring for nearly an entire period. The Vipers, in defeat, still found it easy to have a smile and a compliment of ‘a game well played’ for each other.

We lost Bob (The Rock Doctor) McElhinney about the halfway mark. A seasoned and able defence man

and scorer his skills are truly missed. Bob would often run an attack from the blue line and move swiftly like a forward. Good luck Bob in your new endeavours.

Dani (Ballbreaker) Faucher, who had never played in defence until the Nationals this year, took up her

new position in defence and stood her ground (or ice) alongside team mate Rod Nancarrow. Dani had no fear of stopping shots and will eagerly attack players in the corners.

Rod (the Principal) Nancarrow, our other player in defence, proved to be our experience behind the blue

line, helping to break up the attack of the other teams. Held in high regard amongst the Vipers, the team elected Rod as our team MVP by way of ballot after each game.

Hurricane Harry Macris, on the wing, undaunted by taller opposition, will charge down the wing and

often make a pass to another of his team mates. If not at the point, he can be seen at the goal posts waiting for the rebound. Great effort Harry.

Adam (the Bagman) Binns, ever enthusiastic, can be relied upon to act defensively when needed and will

always be on your wing in the Vipers legendary forwards attacks. Quick, calculating and aggressive; qualities you want in a team player. He is a good man to have on our team.

The youthful Daniel (Dan the Man) Cutting, quick and nimble, agile and his explosive rushes in the

centre ice certainly help the forwards on the attacks and the defence in retreat. Giving his all, Daniel’s efforts on ice certainly helped out team stave off numerous goals by the opposition.

Ian Potter, the strong silent type, and valuable winger. Ian will fend off many opponents and will be in

position for an attack, or will make a pass to create an offensive play. The latter half of the season saw Ian becoming very adept at taking a lead in the Vipers rush on goal.

And finally, Jean-Pierre Faucher, Captain Canuck, in his first season as a captain, inspiring his team

mates with fanatical ideas of trying to bring ice hockey methods to broomball, aggressively played every game, on the wing and in the centre, alongside his team mates.

QuickTime™ and a TIFF (Uncompressed) decompressor are needed to see this picture.

The 2002 Australian National Broomball Championships was held in Adelaide, South Australia on the weekend of 7 - 9 June 2002. There were 16 teams competing in 3 divisions Men’s (Contact) Mixed/Co-ed (Non-Contact) Women’s (Non Contact) Teams were from NQ (North Queensland) - These guys won the "Most distance travelled to the

tournament award", like they travelled a few thousand miles from Townsville (in the Tropics - "Crocodile Hunter" territory). Adelaide in winter must have seemed like the South Pole to them, they fielded a mixed side.

ACT (Australian Capital Territory) - where our nation's capital - (Canberra) is located, sent 1 Men’s, 2 Mixed and combined with NQ women to field a Women’s Side.

NSW (New South Wales) - Players who play in Sydney, where in recent times there has been a real growth in Broomball participation, sent 2 Men’s, 3 Mixed and a Women’s Side.

SA (South Australia) - the home state for the tournament - 2 Men’s, 2 Mixed and a Women’s Side.

Referee in chief was Craig McDaniel from the USBA with Simon Agerbeek of ACT assisting. The Ref's let the matches flow without getting too caught up on technicalities. They had a tough workload with many games played at odd hours. This was very much a nocturnal tournament due to limited availability of Ice time (Adelaide has only one major rink suitable and I think there are only about 10 rinks in the whole of Australia). Craig also moonlighted as a player in the NSW Men’s 2 team - but we didn't excuse him for that. With Australia being such an isolated country (and the major sports like Australian Football (AFL) and Rugby League (ARL) being somewhat peculiar to down under) any 'interstate' competition takes on a bigger meaning than in most other countries. So some old and new rivalries were on here (the biggest rivalry is basically between ACT and the rest).

Women’s Division Favourites in this 3 team division were ACT & NSW, but obviously the form book got thrown out the window very early. The NSW side had an unexpected minor round loss to SA in the opening match. NSW then beat ACT and ACT then beat SA which led to a 3 way points tie with equal goals for/against for each team also. Finalists were decided as ACT by scoring the most goals 'for' and SA by beating NSW head to head in minor round (very unlucky for NSW). The Major Final was a slim 1-0 victory to ACT over SA. With the solitary goal scored by Chris Jeacle-Banks. Mixed/Co-ed Division 8 teams were split into two pools of 4 for the minor round matches. Expected winners in this division would have been a choice of ACT 1, NSW 1 and SA 1 (with NQ as the unknown quantity). After the minor rounds both SA teams were bundled out into the B-grade draw and which was totally dominated by a tired and weary SA1. After only dropping 1 goal through the minors ACT1 took its place along with NSW1, ACT2 and NQ in the semi’s. In a weird turn of fate (yes that bloody form book failed again) ACT2 qualified for the Major final after defeating NQ and in last years grand final replay NSW1 defeated a spiteful ACT1. The major final was a comprehensive 6-2 victory to NSW1. Men’s Division This is traditionally the elite division of the Australian Broomball scene. There were 5 teams entered, with ACT1 and NSW1 expected to battle out for major honours. There were strong rumours of NSW1 desperately wanting to break the 10 year domination of the ACT team after the NSW1 narrowly lost to ACT1 last year. In the minor games some huge scores were recorded with ACT 1 defeating SA 2 by 18 goals to nil (the SA 2 team was made up of rookies - some of whom had playing experience limited to weeks rather than years and had never previously played any contact Broomball). On the subject of contact/checking - check out Australian Football or any Australian Rugby on cable sport and you will notice that Aussies love contact sports (even though these sports are being cleaned up for the masses). NSW 1 were expected to make the final but suffered an upset loss to SA 1 in a critical minor round game. NSW1 led 1 to nil until the last 1:30 of game when SA1 scored twice to snatch the win. SA finally had a team in the Men’s final for the first time in 7 years. Men’s final opened at express pace with Andrew Snow of SA1 hitting the post early on with a cracking full stretch shot. Bruce Davidson, the goaltender for ACT1 held out and the score was 0-0 at half time with momentum going back and forth between both sides - could a shock SA1 victory occur?… Alas the form book was right on this occasion and ACT1 prevailed in the second half to record a 3-0 win with goals to Trevor Banks, Ben Boyd and Stuart McNab. Division Winners: Men's: ACT 1 Mixed: NSW 1 Women's: ACT Gerry McCaffery

Nationals Men’s and Mixed Division 2 Men’s Division 2 We started slowly, and I suppose it could be said we really took a beating from our number one side. Then with the help of Shane Penny and Craig Barrett on the bench we got our game organised. From then on we showed improvement every game. I think everyone should be congratulated in the spirit we maintained throughout the championship. And I really hope that everyone goes to the next one. I would especially like to thank the new people from Noarlunga for the effort they made and the way they fitted straight in to our way of thinking, of let’s give it a go. Mixed Division 2 The mixed side showed a lot of promise straight away and we were doing ok in a few of the games… as with the men’s division 2. I am proud to say that the group of people we had played hard, but most of all played in the spirit that makes the sport fun. To all the girls, I do hope you all go away again next year. With the improvement everyone made through out the weekend I am sure some will step up to the number one side. As I said before thanks to all the players from Noarlunga for being part of the fun. On a personal note, I thank you all for the effort made and the attitude everyone had to make these championships fun. I hope that we get enough of you to go away next year, as it would be a pleasure to play another tournament with you all. I would like to thank Kerry Kemp and Tony Howlett for the long hours in the scorers box. Bruce McPhee

Nationals Women’s side As first time Captain of any Broomball team, I was very proud that weekend. The skill level of the whole side improved immensely. I knew that we could beat NSW, as we beat them last year. It was ACT that was the battle, and what a battle it was. I would also like to thank the support of our interstate imports Karen & Tara. And the support of our coaches Alan & Kim is greatly appreciated. The fact that we made the final, WOW. We didn’t come out of it empty handed, we all got runners-up trophies. But as far as next year, let’s aim for the top. We are going to win that final. On a personal note I believe that my husband (Shane Penny) deserves a big thank you for all his efforts. The championship was very well organised, to all other committee members and Nationals organisers (you know who you are) I Thank You. Without all the other team members, the events of the weekend may not of ran so smoothly. Sam Penny
