Lisa Keenan I hope you and your family are still keeping safe at this difficult time
In the last newsletter I had hoped that by Autumn, things would have progressed so that RSF could begin to
hold some of our regular activities and it is disappointing that we are not in a position to do so. The Family Sup-
port Group were able to hold some family activities at the beach and a soft play centre in the summer. As the
weather gets worse and more restrictions are put in place, if feels like we are taking a step backwards.
We will continue to support families in whatever way we can, if you have any questions or issues,
please get in touch. We are mixing home-working and office working, although please do not drop by the office
without making an appointment first. To get in touch, leave a message on our answerphone and we will get
back to you—or contact us via our website, facebook or email—the details are all on page 7. We are happy to
get in touch with you via video messaging or zoom meeting. We can meet face to face if this can be done safe-
ly. We do not feel it is the right time to start our social groups, we will keep you informed as and when this
changes.
What else are we doing?
Family passes for Flamingoland, Dalby Forest and Castle Howard are still available to book Mon-
day to Friday. You can only use the Flamingoland passes once per year.
Family Support Group is meeting at venues where social distancing is possible.
The RAFT support group (for families of children and young people w ith autism) is meeting regu-
larly on zoom and the leaders of the group (who are also parents of children with autism) are able to do indi-
vidual zoom meetings if you would like to talk to someone who understands what you are going through.
The zoom sessions are on Tuesday, 11am to 12noon;
13th & 20th October
3rd & 17th November
1st & 15th December
Would you like an Australian penpal? I know it ’s all about in-
stant communication, but how about taking a different approach, writ-
ing an actual letter to another disabled young person across the other
side of the world! We are joining a scheme with a similar organisation
in Australia to match children and young people. You will receive a
pack of paper, envelopes and stamps to get you started and joined
with an Australian person of a similar age. Get in touch if you would
like to give it a try!
Would you like to take part in a wheelchair walk? We
would use the beautiful Dalby Forest as a venue as it has
good accessibility. Please let me know if you would like to
join a small group walk for families who have a child who
uses a wheelchair.
If you have any other ideas of things RSF could do—let me
know!
Best wishes, Lisa

Your Opportunity: Help for 18—24 year olds
Family Fund have long supported families of disa-
bled children with grants for equipment and holi-
days.
They currently have a small grant programme that
supports young adults aged 18 to 24 years old who
are living at home.
This funding pot is limited and on a ‘first come, first
served’ basis so don’t delay putting an application
in. The person applying must be a parent or carer.
To be eligible for a grant from this fund the young
person must have high support needs, see the
webpage for more details.
Additionally, to be eligible your family must be in
receipt of the listed benefits and must not have re-
ceived a grant from the Family Fund in the last 12
months.
A grant can be used for;
Digital/computer equipment
Clubs and activities
Sports equipment
Transport, including finding out if the young
person wants to learn to drive
Recreational activities
A musical instrument
Equipment needed for education or vocational
course
The grant cannot be used for wheelchairs or a fam-
ily break or holiday.
The Family Fund are very helpful when applying
and will guide you through the process.

You might want to make use of a lanyard if you cannot wear a face mask, it will make people aware that you have an additional or hidden need. We also have some cards explaining why you can’t wear a face mask, or you can download a message for your mo-bile here

Virtual 2020 Earlier this year, when we had to cancel our Yorkshire Wolds Cycle Challenge, it was hugely disappoint-
ing. It would have been our 10th year and hopefully would have raised over £35,000 for RSF—our biggest
fundraising event of the year.
Instead we decided to hold the ‘Virtual 2020’ and
invited people to complete the 146 miles of the
Wolds Cycle Way in their own time, in their own
way, over a month.
What a fantastic result—with 130 entrants, we
raised over £20,500 (not including gift aid).
With a bit more time to complete it, a number of
RSF parents, young people and staff also took part.
The miles were completed in a variety of ways;
Along the actual Wolds Way route
Across the remote North York Moors
Alongside the Liverpool to Leeds canal
In the cyclists own home!
In the highlands of Scotland
Across the month, all in one day and twice over!
Thank you so much to all who joined in and we will
be making t shirt presentations to our higher fund-
raisers including, Anne (our pink lady) who cycled
the distance AND made face masks which raised
£2,102!

Rob and Tracey’s Virtual Climb
Over a month, mother and son committed to a
virtual Mount Everest climb—a huge undertak-
ing. They worked out that they both had to
climb their stairs 110 ...every day... for a month.
What a brilliant effort, they raised £450 and
were able to use the Barclay’s Match Fund to
double that to £900—with gift aid to come also!
