Newsletter/Pānui 8 19 May 2017 Kia ora Parents Next week is ‘bullying free’ week in New Zealand. This links in perfectly with the introduction of Keeping Ourselves Safe and following Road Safety Week. Teachers will be talking to classes about bullying and what it is, so children are aware of their own and other’s behaviour. There are four types of bullying; physical, verbal, emotional or online (cyberbullying). It is widely accepted that there are different types of bullying. These fall into four main groups: Verbal Bullying – repeated mocking, name-calling, unwanted teasing, homophobic or racist remarks. Physical Bullying – repeated hitting or kicking, taking or threatening to take possessions. Social or Relational Bullying - repeated exclusion, spreading rumours or gossiping, withholding friendship, pulling faces. Cyber-Bullying – repeated threats, criticism or unkind comments or images sent by text, email or posted on social media. Children are more likely to be aware of physical bullying and more recently cyber bullying, but social/relational bullying can be a surprise to some, but as you will be aware, has a significant negative impact on children who are victims of this. In recent weeks we have been doing the twice yearly well-being survey. We do our well-being survey to give us insight into what is happening in the playground and classroom, telling us of things that we might not see. Teachers collect the information with their own classes, so they notice which of their children who being nominated by others and those who are 'over nominating' others (which is also valuable information). Sometimes teachers notice hidden dynamics within their classroom. Most importantly, the well being survey gives children a chance to share with their teacher, who and what is bothering them. The information is collated across teams and the whole school and we look for patterns and trends to alert us to things we need to be aware of and act upon. As usual if there are things going on for your child that don't seem to be getting better - come in and talk to us as we do want to know! A reminder that the Safe Travel to School survey closes next Friday (26 th May) and we would love your feedback – here is the link - https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/HoonHayOLA

The Board of Trustees is committed to keeping our whole community informed as we travel through the process of the Christchurch Schools Renewal Process. Firstly, I would like to thank you for so many responses to the end of year survey last year. This information has been critical in writing our Education Brief. It was fantastic to be able to capture such great information. You will notice to the right we have a time-line so at a glance you can see where we are in the process. To ensure everyone knows what is involved in each stage I will explain the stages. Data Gathering Last year we undertook a huge amount of data gathering to enable us to write our Education Brief. As mentioned earlier, we gathered survey data from our community to ensure a historic perspective is included in our new Cultural Narrative. We have engaged the Safe Travel to School group via the council and we have also met with the Cashmere-Spreydon Community Board. These two groups are assisting us to ensure we are making the most of parking, travel and safe entrance and exit to school. We met and surveyed the teaching staff to identify what we need to be thinking about. Writing the Education Brief The Education Brief is “our” document for the Ministry to use when planning our renovation. It is a vital document outlining the uniqueness of our school. We were extremely lucky to use the services of Robyn Madden (ex BOT member) to write this. Having gathered our information we certainly had some strong themes: Community: This was our strongest theme. We are a strong, connected community that is part of our children’s education. We need easy access to school, and places for our parents and extended community to meet. Flexible Learning Spaces: It was very clear that our children ALL needed spaces they can learn in. Spaces for collaboration, spaces for quiet learning, play spaces, natural spaces, and wonderful outside spaces. Safe Access to School: Parking, and safe entrances and exists. Submission and Review of MOE This is where we are at now. The MOE currently has our document and is reviewing it. Master Planning This is where all the design is done. The Ministry has a number of agencies that they use to come up with what our renovation looks like. Our Education Brief informs them of what makes our school special. This is why the Education Brief is so important. It should be kept in mind that this is a Ministry of Education project and whilst we have some say they ultimately are running the project. One of the things our community can help with at this stage is reviewing plans. Any Architects or Engineers (or the like) who are parents in our community, and would like to volunteer their expertise, please email [email protected]. Renovation The big event. This will be a large undertaking and there will most likely be some disruptions, however as a board we are absolutely committed to not compromising the education of our current students. I hope this has made things a little clearer. Please feel free to contact the school with any questions you may have. Bernie McCarthy – BOT Chair
