Community NoticesHealth Promoting SchoolNurse UpdateThere have been a number of con-fi rmed cases of whooping cough within the school, and I would urge you to read the attached letter is-sued by CDC. If you are concerned about your child, please see your family doctor. Our Athletics Carnival is coming up on 23rd May . Remember, slip on a shirt, slop on some sunscreen, slap on a hat, slide on some sunnies & seek shade. And one more thing – sip on lots of water.“When are we going to have our needles?”, is the usual question I get asked as I wander around the school. So, to answer your ques-tion, the Year 7 girls will be having their second Gardisil immunisation later this month. Then, in June, I’ll be catching up with the Year 8s for their Boostrix (tetanus, diphtheria, whooping cough), Varilix (chicken pox) and TB screening (Mantoux). Dates are yet to be confi rmed. Stay healthy

WHOOPING COUGH (PERTUSSIS)

Parents/ carers, students and teachers are reminded that pertussis (whooping cough)

continues to spread throughout the NT. There have been a few cases reported from within

the school.

Whooping cough usually starts as a snuffle or a cold. Within a few days it develops into bouts

of coughing, which is sometimes accompanied by a distinctive noise or “whoop “when the

person breathes in between coughs. This coughing can last for many weeks. Sometimes,

vomiting, or shortness of breath, can occur. Whooping cough is a life threatening disease in

young babies.

It is important that all children, and adults who work or care for infants, are vaccinated. The

Australian schedule of immunizations recommends children be vaccinated against whooping

cough at 2,4 & 6 months of age, and 4 and 13 years. An adult booster vaccine is available,

and is recommended for couples planning a pregnancy, and carers of young babies.

To help prevent this infection spreading, people who have whooping cough should not go out

in public (including attending school) until 21 days after the onset of coughing, or they have

completed 5 days of medically prescribed antibiotics.

For more information you may contact the Health Promoting School Nurse at Katherine High

School or Centre for Disease Control (8973 9049).

Clontarf Community Comes Together Words by Matthew HamdorfPhotos by Matthew Hamdorf

Week 6 of Term 1 the Katherine Clontarf Academy was all about helping others. With Clean up Australia Day held on 4th March, a group of young Academy members joined together to help keep their town clean.

WELL-BEINGKatherine Academy

March 2012

With an early morning rise the boys armed themselves with gloves and rubbish bags then it was time to make the Katherine Town centre a cleaner place.

After a few hours the boys refl ected on how Clean up Australia started and what it means to each of us. This gave the boys a greater understanding and appreciation for the hard work that goes into keeping our towns clean and tidy and that if everyone helps out a little it makes for a better place for everyone.

After the hard work was done we all enjoyed the buffet breakfast at the local Cinema Café.

The activities were only just starting with International Women’s Day held on Thursday, 8th March.

The Katherine Academy came together with the Stronger Smarter Sisters (Katherine High Schools girls program) to help celebrate this important day.

The young men of the Katherine Academy value the contribution that women bring to the town of Katherine as well at the Katherine High School. It is these strong vales that gave the boys the opportunity to get involved together for a game of touch rugby.

Senior and middle school students from both groups gathered together on the Katherine High School oval to participate.

Both games were played in great spirits with some of the Stronger Smarter Sisters giving the Clontarf boys a lesson in touch rugby.

Once the physical activities were done, the Academy put on lunch for the Stronger Smarter Sisters.

With both the Clontarf Academy and the Stronger Smarter Sisters program coming together it was a great opportunity to showcase the relationship built between the two groups.
