Backfiring from the chair:

The E. trip has come and gone and no extra testicals were found!

The members attending the E.T. Meander;

Peter and Eve Clive and Shirley Wells and Anita Paul and Miranda Nigel Graham Noisy Nick John According to my bikes odometer we covered a total distance of 1095km for the weekend, part of the route included the Kaapsehoop road, the infamous 22 and the R40 with its hairpin bend.

The group met at Bimbo’s from around 07h30 and departed a little after 08h00. While riding along the N12 I suddenly realised with horror that the first intended fuel stop, the Shell Ultra City was undergoing renovations and the toilets were in steel containers. Somehow I don’t think our female members would have enjoyed that, so to prevent coming under fire from these members I quickly stopped and informed everyone of the change in plans, mentioning that we would then turnoff at the casino for breakfast at the closest Wimpy.

This is where the wheels came off. The lesson learnt, don’t change the original plan! Somehow we decided we were going to bypass the toll gate. Now the secret here is to make damn sure everyone and I mean everyone hears what you said. As it turns out, not everyone heard, so some headed for the toll gate while others took a rather long and seemingly endless road. Not all was lost, as a map of the intended route was handed out at the start, so we did manage to re unite in Badplaas.

From here on out the trip was spent as a group, riding the twisties and taking in the sights, smells and sounds. By the time we reached Nelspruit we had truly gotten to know our steel ponies.

After checking in at the hotel we headed out to Kaapsehoop for a late lunch. Clive managed to find his usual pink drink and I had my first beer. See, I can go without it at breakfast.

The evening was spent at the Upper Deck in Nelspruit, watching the Bulls beat the Sharks! 20-19.

Sunday morning we left bright and early and headed out to the Woodsman for breakfast, the early morning air is something else. Clean, crisp, pine scented air filled the nostrils and the filters as we weaved our way along the planned route.

After breakfast we took the 22 to Hazeyview, all doing it at our own pace. Sorry Allen, but here I took the title of Slo-mo and arrived way after the others at the T junction. We turned left and headed out for some sightseeing along the way to Graskop, stopping in for pancakes and sweets. After visiting the Pinnacle, God’s window, Wonder view and the Berlin Falls, we took a rather spirited dash Via Blyde Rivier towards Lydenburg; bypassing the Echo Caves as we had run out of time.

The fuel stop in Lydenburg turned out to be my Achilles Heel. Some assho!e decided he had right of way and was going to make a point, bumping Anita with his car as he pulled into a parking bay. Needless to say I saw red, shouting and swearing as only I can, I gave him a sample punch to the jaw which left him with a healthy respect for Ulysses East Rand. Sorry guys, but this, I was not going to let slip by!

We rode out to Dullstroom for a late lunch at the Transvaal Inn; after chatting and chowing down, we said our goodbyes and at our own pace, headed for home.

The Sunday Run

I had every intention in the world to meet all at Bimbo’s on my bike to partake in the short run to the 1000 Bike Show. Not to be, I had to resort to the quad(cage) to get me to Bimbo’s as once again my legs let me down.

On arriving at the gathering point I found Big Rob togged up and ready to go. While having coffee the rest of a rather small group arrived.

Grant was on his new steed the big 6 BMW, which gave us all a lot to talk about and talk and tease we did. All wished Grant many happy miles and enjoyable experiences on this magnificent machine.

There were no takers for the 1000 Bike Show as some of the guys had gone on Saturday but we decided to do Browsers in Alberton for breakfast. I arranged with Les to join us which he agreed to do so we were 6 guys for breakfast. As per usual the breakfast was excellent at R20 including a free coffee, an absolute bargain.

The ride to Browsers was enjoyed by all as by this time it had warmed up a tad. We sat outside in the sun and spent a good hour and a half chatting before we all departed for our own destinations.

As per usual it was wonderful to tie up with the guys and although some were up in ET we still enjoyed ourselves and look forward to the next ride.

TO ALL MEMBERS PLEASE NOTE THAT EVEN IF SOME OF OUR MEMBERS ARE AWAY ON A LONG RUN ULYSSES EAST RAND RIDES ON EVERY PUBLIC HOLIDAY AND SUNDAY IN THE YEAR THE ONLY EXCEPTION BEING CHRISTMAS DAY. THERE WILL ALWAYS BE SOMEONE AT BIMBO’S TO SHARE A RIDE.

The Midweek Break

At last I managed to get a leg over, no not what you think I managed to ride my trusty steed for a change. Tuesday dawned bright as only the Highveld can and with a hop and skip in my step, I approached my little silver dream machine. Although cold she started first time round and try as I may, I could not resist her appeal. Now for company, I phoned Les and got a thumbs up for a quick blast down the R59 to the circus for breakfast. I then got hold of Mike Cresswell and he was also up for it.

I picked Mike up on the on ramp from van Buren road and a spirited dash down the N3 to pick up Les who was waiting at home. A cage dodging exercise through Alberton saw us onto the R59 in no time.

A “ gentle” cruise out past the blockhouse saw us sitting down to an excellent breakfast in no time.

Sitting in the sun admiring our bikes and chatting for ages about anything and everything had the desired effect of washing the last of those sticky black thoughts out of my mind and at last I felt at peace again. I can without contradiction say that there is nothing like a mid-week ride to make the week look better.

Anyone needing a mid-week pick-up phone and I will endeavour to put together an impromptu run, to my two brothers at arms who rescued me today thank you, you put a smile back on my face.
