You Can Help: Housing Opens Doors
Something pretty exciting is launching in Ontario this month: the Housing Opens Doors campaign.
I’ll bet you have witnessed the positive change that affordable housing can make in people’s lives. Good housing leads to good health, stable housing leads to success in school and jobs. Safe and secure housing leads to a higher quality of life at all ages. Better housing leads to a better Ontario.
On May 25, we took the message to the streets of Ottawa: over 5,000 people came out to the Byward Market and rang the doorbell to show their support in one day.
Now we need you to be part of this campaign. Here’s what you need to do:
• Look for the postcard inside this newsletter. Fill it out and mail it in to add your voice.
• Go to the campaign website www.housingopensdoors.ca and ring the bell
• Help us spread the word by telling your friends, neighbours and colleagues what affordable housing means to you and your family.
Help us get this campaign launched!

Congratulations Guy Normand!Congratulations to this year's Doug DesBrisay Good Neighbour Award winner!GuyNormandhaslivedat110Nelsonsinceitfirstopenedin1989and is one of CCOC's 50 longest standing tenants. He was nominated by his neighbour for helping her remain in her own independent apartment over many years.
He’s always ready with a helping hand. He has helped with move ins and minor appliance repair. He’s taken books back to the library when his neighbour can’t get out in the winter, and done other deliveries as well.
He’s got a good set of tools and is happy to help tenants when things need fixing.Thistypeofneighbourlinesscanmakeallthedifferencefortenants on their own who just need a bit of help to live independently.

New CCOC staffRachel O'Connell has replaced Allison Hockin in the Finance Department. Rachel graduated from Leeds University in the UK and lived in Asia for a few years before settling down in Ottawa with her husband to raise a family. After some time at home with the kids, she's excited to be with CCOC!
Jessica Elinord is the newest addition to the Maintenance Administration team. Jessica graduated from Carleton University with her Honours B.A in Psychology last November. Before joining CCOC, she worked as an Analyst and Administrative Assistant for the Homelessness Partnering Secretariat at Human Resources Skills Development Canada. Now she is really looking forward togainingexperienceinnon-profithousingwithCCOC.

President's Address to the Annual General MeetingCCOC completed a new strategic plan in 2012. We invited all of our members, board and committee volunteers, and all of our staff to help us express our vision for the kind of landlord we want to be.
We took some important ideas that have been part of CCOC’s values for a long time, put them into writing and renewed our commitment.
CCOC will continue being a landlord of choice: We are not in-between housing, somewherepeopleliveuntiltheyfindsomethingbetter;notthekindofhousingwherepeople live because they don’t have other choices. We want to offer the kind of homes people choose to live in, and the kind of homes people would still choose to live in even when they have more opportunities and higher incomes. We want to be a landlord of choice, not a landlord of circumstance.
QualityofLifeispartofCCOC’svisionofbeingagoodlandlord.Thismeansgoodqualitybuildingsandapartments;diversityinhousingoptionsandtenantmix;responsiveservice;affordability;alandlordwithgoodcommunity-basedvalues;avoiceindecisionmaking;feelingsafeathome;“walkability”;andpersonalresponsibility to space and community.
We felt so strongly about our role as a landlord in improving quality of life, that we added it to CCOC’s Mission and Values statement:
“Wevaluehousingwhichisaffordable,livableanddiverseintypeand contributes to a high quality of life.“
If the kinds of homes we offer contribute to a better quality of life, then we know we are doing it right.
