During the Referendum campaign the Nats systematically accused the

Better Together side of scaremongering and lies. Yet, the biggest lie

and scaremonger came from the Nats in that the NHS would be

privatised if there was a No vote.

What the Nats failed to say was that the NHS had been a fully

devolved issues since the setting up of the Scottish Parliament and the

only body that could privatise or damage the NHS in Scotland was

Scottish Government.

For many years before the Referendum the Nats have been centralis-

ing powers that were local for decades such as the Police and Fire

Services, while removing huge sums of money from the North East to

fund winning votes in the Centre of Scotland such as an unneeded

£1,500,000,000 bridge and £350,000,000 for a toy town railway.

The root of the chaos in the Grampian Health Board, in particular

Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, is being caused by the Nats under funding

the NHS in the North East to the tune of £20,000,000.

This starvation of cash by the Nats has impacted heavily on cancer

care for people in the North East and especially for the people of

Peterhead who according to figures presented by Grampian NHS to

Aberdeenshire Council have by far and away the biggest number of

cancer incidents per head of population in Grampian.

A review by HMICS to assess Police Scotland practice regarding the standing authority for armed response vehicles has endorsed the decision making process and the current method of overtly carrying sidearms. The review follows a request by Police Scotland for the Inspectorate to review the process surrounding the decision following concerns regarding the use of armed police officers. Assistant Chief Constable Bernard Higgins, Operational Support, said: “We have a fundamental duty to protect life and keep people safe. The operational decision making process around the use of armed officers is one that is informed by a range of evidence and intelligence and adheres to guidance set for all police forces throughout the UK. Having a small number of armed police officers available means we can retain our operational flexibility and ensure that more than 98% of our officers remain unarmed but we remain best placed to support the public, no matter where or when. The public would expect nothing less.

Scottish Countryside Alliance agrees with police and prosecuting authority – plans to increase powers for the Scottish SPCA are flawed Granting increased investigatory powers to the Scottish SPCA would create a conflict between its campaigning and prosecution roles that could damage public confidence in wildlife crimes investigations, the Crown Office and Procurators Fiscals Service (COPFS) has said. This view is shared by the Police Service of Scotland and the Scottish Countryside Alliance (SCA). In response to the Scottish Government Consultation into the viability of increased investigatory powers for the Scottish SPCA, Police Scotland commented that the charity’s opposition to snaring and trapping – both legitimate processes within the legal framework – could create tensions and conflict for staff and the organisation and may prejudice of the impartiality of investigations. Now Scottish Countryside Alliance director Jamie Stewart has added: “The SCA welcomes the Scottish Government’s determi-nation to tackle wildlife crime in Scotland and supports the work of the Partnership for Action against Wildlife Crime, but we can-not support the suggested increased powers for the Scottish SPCA as we do not believe that inspectors can operate impartiality or without prejudice. “We note that RSPCA employees in England and Wales are not appointed as inspectors under the Animal Welfare Act 2006, reflecting concerns expressed by a wide variety of organisations and the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee when examining the Animal Welfare Bill as it went through the UK Parliament. “Those concerns are identical to those identified in this consultation, especially the appropriateness of appointing employ-ees from an organisation that is a charity and has policies and campaigns which could lead to conflicts of interest and the problems of ensuring proper accountability.”

RoSPA welcomes Scotland’s move to lower

drink-drive limit in time for Christmas The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents

(RoSPA) strongly supports the Scottish Government’s

move to lower its drink-drive limit in time for this

Christmas.

If the plans are approved by the Scottish Parliament, the

new limit will be introduced on December 5.

When introduced, the new legal limit will be 50mg of

alcohol per 100ml of blood, a reduction from the current

limit of 80mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood. A public

awareness campaign will also be launched with the

message that drivers should not drink alcohol at all.

RoSPA, a safety charity that has been at the heart of

accident prevention for nearly 100 years, has long

campaigned for a lower drink-drive limit to be

introduced across the whole of the UK.

It hopes that other parts of the country will now follow

Scotland’s lead in taking steps to reduce their

drink-drive limits too.

Sandy Allan, RoSPA’s road safety manager for

Scotland, said “RoSPA welcomes and strongly supports

the Scottish Government’s decision to lower the drink-

drive limit in Scotland, which we believe will save lives

and prevent injuries on Scotland’s roads.

“There is a considerable body of research which shows

that reducing drink-drive limits is effective in reducing

drink-drive deaths and injuries. We would like to see the

rest of the UK follow Scotland’s example.”

The Scottish Government previously announced its

intention to reduce the limit following a consultation

which found almost three quarters of those who

responded believed the drink-drive limit should be

reduced.

Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill said: “Drink driving

shatters families and communities and we must take

action to reduce the risk on our roads.

“The latest estimates show that approximately one in ten

deaths on Scottish roads involve drivers who are over

the legal limit and research shows that even just one

alcoholic drink before driving can make you three times

as likely to be involved in a fatal car crash.

“As a result, 20 families every year have to cope with

the loss of a loved one and around 760 people are treat-

ed for injuries caused by someone who thought it was

acceptable to drink alcohol and get behind the wheel

and drive. We cannot let this continue.”

Across the whole of Great Britain, an estimated 230

people were killed, 1,200 were seriously injured and

8,510 were slightly injured in drink-drive accidents in

2012.

Scottish SPCA firework warning As November approaches, the Scottish SPCA is issuing their annual warning that fireworks can have a serious impact on the welfare of all animals. The charity is reminding people to bear in mind that fireworks season can be a very stressful time of year for pet owners who are trying to protect their animals from the fear and distress they can cause. Last year the Scottish SPCA released figures which showed 90% of vets support the charity’s call for tighter restrictions regarding the sale and public use of fireworks. Scottish SPCA Chief Superintendent Mike Flynn said, “Current regulations are so relaxed that fireworks can be set off on any given day and for weeks and months on end rather than being limited to the major festival periods. “This leaves pet owners and farmers unable to make adequate provisions for their animals. “It’s not surprising that vets are supportive of our calls for tighter restrictions given the sheer volume of animals they are treating for fireworks related fear. “We’ve been made aware of numerous ncidents over the years where animals have come to serious harm and even death as a re-sult of fireworks being set off near them. “Animals will panic and flee at the sound of the bang and this can result in road traffic accidents. We’ve received reports of wild swans flying into electricity pylons and horses being badly injured after running through barbed wire fences. “We’re also aware of incidents where farm animals have aborted their young soon after nearby firework displays.” Chief Supt Flynn continued, “Animals have heightened senses and their hearing is much stronger than ours. A dog’s hearing is twice as sensitive as a human’s and a cat’s three times. The bang from a firework is terrifying to an animal and can cause extreme distress. “The legislation should reflect the serious impact that fireworks can have on the welfare of domestic, farm and wild animals and currently it does not.” The Scottish SPCA is reiterating their call for fireworks sales to be restrict-ed to the week preceding 5 No-vember and not at all afterwards, with the current rules pertaining to New Year’s Eve, Chinese New Year and Diwali remaining unchanged. Scotland’s animal welfare charity is also calling for the unlicensed use of fireworks by members of the public to be limited to defined festival periods rather than all year round.
