A special Thank You goes out to each of the six outstanding social workers we have working at the Isabella County Commission on Aging. You certainly make a difference!

March has historically been known as Social Work Month. This year’s theme is dedicated to honoring “Essential Social Workers.” Within our agency, we are fortunate to have six Social Workers with an extensive knowledge of programs and services that are available to older adults in our community. They spend countless hours ensuring that needs are being met, while treating those who need assistance with compassion and respect. Social workers are a vital part of our community. The Social Workers at the Isabella County Commission on Aging take pride in working with multiple agencies, to establish rapport and understanding of complex policies and resources available to the public. Throughout the year, these Social Workers continue to undergo continuing education opportunities and as practitioners, our social workers are here to put those skills to good use by offering to help in establishing personalized care plans for clients and their caregivers.

Essential Duties May Include:

• Developing a comprehensive care plan based on input from the client, health care providers, and members of the client’s family.

• Determining what services are needed in the clients’ homes and assigning In-Home Care Workers to clients and/or making referrals to various agencies including Department of Health and Human Services, Department of Veterans Affairs, and Social Security, in order to establish services.

• Assisting clients with support services in areas such as housing, clothing, medical/psychological care, social security, utilities, recreation and insurance needs.

• Monitoring implementation of service plans and providing regular follow-up and assessment of services in relation to the goals and objectives of the comprehensive care plan.

• Overseeing the provision of services such as securing home health equipment, preparing documents and forms and related activities.

March is Social Work Month ~ Meet our COA Team

COA Executive Director’s Comments

Welcome Spring . . . while it might not feel like it quite yet, March 20 marks the first day of spring. It is coming, and I am so excited. We are a baseball family, so to us, March means the start of baseball. To top it off, this spring we will have the opportunity to cheer on our oldest son while he competes in his first college baseball season. To say that we are proud parents would be a huge understatement.

Another point of pride for me is the opportunity that I have to work alongside an amazing team at the Isabella

County Commission on Aging. Every member of our team is vital to our success, bringing unique qualities, experience, knowledge, and above all else, a genuine passion for helping others. The staff at the COA truly care about those we serve and strive to provide the best programming and services possible. The trials and tribulations over the past year have been hard on all of us, but our COA team has stepped up to the plate, taking on new roles and doing whatever is needed to be done in order to ensure that the services are provided with the highest level of care.

March 5 is Employee Appreciation Day. I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere appreciation to our entire Isabella County Commission on Aging Family. Your passion and dedication to those we serve is an inspiration, and I am honored to have the opportunity to work with each and every one of you.

Jennifer A. Crawford, M.S.A., COA Executive Director

What is the difference between reminiscing and remembering? (from Daily Caring & MEWalsh) Reminiscing is not the same as asking someone to remember something from the past. Remembering something specific, even from long ago, can be stressful for someone with dementia/memory loss because they’re likely to feel pressured or put on the spot. In contrast, when a pleasant memory floats up and they share it with you, they’ll feel good. For example, your person might not remember or know how to answer when you ask a simple question like, “where did you grow up?” That could make them feel embarrassed or angry. But, if you’re looking through old photos, they might spontaneously say, “Oh, look, there’s my house. My mom used to bake my favorite cookies every Saturday – they were chocolate chip.” This could even be a sensory experience (remembering the smell of chocolate chip cookies baking, the warm cookie in your hand, the taste and smell). It is rarely, if ever, a good idea to ask someone with dementia/memory loss – “Remember when...” Most of the time, as mentioned above, they will not remember and it can end up being a negative conversation/experience for both parties. However, reminiscing – either on the spot – as mentioned above – or intentional – by pulling out old photo albums or just having a conversation that is serendipitous around the “good old days” can bless all parties involved!
