Aloha,

It’s been a great couple of weeks here at the YMCA, as the kids are out of school, and the pool is getting warmer. Our swimmers have been doing very well both in and out of the pool this year, and it has been a fun month to look back and see how far these kids have come. All of our kids do very well academically, and push themselves everyday athletically with us. A big “Congrats” goes out to all of our student-athletes on our program, especially Aaron Pigott who graduated this year, and is off to Emery-Riddle at the end of the summer. He has been amazing for our program, and his family has been huge for all of us. We will miss you guys!Coming up here this summer will be two meets at the YMCA, one June 19th and the other August 7th. These meets are for everyone, and are strongly encouraged even for our beginner swimmers. Meets are fun, and very rewarding when you get a best time, or swim a race that he/she has never done before. Let’s all try and come out for those meets as those should be a lot of fun. Also coming up after that will be the State Championships in Oahu, July 16-19. It will be a great meet as a lot of our swimmers are posed for great swims. Please let me know your intentions to go soon, as I need to get things in order before that big meet a little earlier than usual. Finally, a couple of different activities that SKA is up to this summer will be playing water polo and participate in an ocean race. On Wednesdays, we have been playing polo for a bit and having the team playing together learning the game. It has been fun as we have been working on positions, positioning the players, and learning “the flow of the game”. It has been very beneficial for everyone as we are training hard, but using different muscles, and aspects of athleticism in all of our swimmers. Also, the Hanalei Ocean Race is July 31. It is a fun event with the “pier swim”, the One Mile, and the everlasting Two Mile. I hope everyone can come up and do it. We have swept a couple of events these past two years, and I would love to see SKA go up and “represent to the fullest!”Anyway, keep swimming hard guys; It will all pay off this summer. Keep the focus, and keep challenging yourself to get better!

Aloha,Coach Billy

NANA’S HOUSE NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT!!

Last year Nana’s House served a total of 400 families, 722 adults and 560 children. Nana’s House is a Family Support center in Waimea on the West Side of Kaua’i. Families come varied ethnic backgrounds, 207 were Native Hawaiians.  This year that amount will be much higher due to the economic situation, loss of jobs, and budget cuts.  The hardest time for families that are already struggling is during the summer because that means no breakfast or lunch.  Jobs on the West Side are very slim and a lot of our families do not have transportation. We have a Food Pantry that is open four times a week and a clothing closet for our west side families that is open 9-5 pm Monday thru Thursday and 8:30-4pm on Fridays.  We have Family Counseling, Case Management, Information and Referral, Budgeting Classes, Parenting Classes, Substance Abuse Treatment for Pregnant Women, Perinatal Support Services and Smoking Cessation Classes.  We come under the umbrella of Child & Family Service and our mission is Strengthening Families and Fostering the Healthy Development of Children.  We are a non-profit organization and all of our services are free. Please contact Pam Chock for more information regarding this important family resource and for volunteering opportunities. [email protected]

Trained officials observe the swimmers during each event to ensure compliance with these technical rules. If a swimmer commits an infraction of the rules that is observed by an officIal, a disqualification (DQ) will result. This means that the swimmer will not receive an official time and will not be eligible for an award in that event. A disqualification may result from actions such as not getting to the starting blocks on time, false starting, performing strokes in an illegal manner, or unsportsmanlike conduct. DQs are also a result of technical rules violations. They include but are not limited to:

• Freestyle: Walking on the bottom, pulling on the lane rope, not touching the wall on a turn, or not completing the distance.

• Backstroke: Pulling or kicking into the wall once a swimmer has turned passed the vertical onto the breast. Turning onto the breast before touching the wall with the hand at the finish of the race.

• Breaststroke: An illegal kick such as flutter (freestyle), dolphin (butterfly), or scissors (side stroke); not on the breast; alternating movements of the arms; taking two arm strokes or two leg kicks while the head is under water; touching with only one hand at the turns or finish.

• Butterfly: Alternating movements of the arms or legs; pushing the arms forward under instead of over the water surface (underwater recovery); a breaststroke style of kick; touching with only one hand at the turns or finish.

YOU THINK SWIMMING IS TOUGH NOW?OK kids time to climb into the boony-kine time way back machine and take a look at when speedos were woven from pine needles and goggles were for jet pilots. In 1971 swim meets were held in the municipal water treatment plant. During the summer time, the water filters were turned on and much of the solids were drained away allowing us kids a few hours in the morning to swim some laps before the rash appeared. The summer swim season in Northern Idaho unfolded with us kids rolling out of bed at 4:00AM to feed the moose and grab a quick slab of back bacon slathered in butter and syrup. We rode our our Schwinn Stingrays down the mountain and stopped to throw rotten apples at passing train cars packed with hobos heading off to the great cities of the west like Walla Walla. The pool opened early and the entrance was manned by metal turnstiles that had the same effect of monkey bars, turning everyone under 12 into acrobatic lemurs

and keeping no one out. Once inside, behind a screened cage lurked the coaches and lifeguards whose dimly lit faces revealed noses thickly coated in white zinc oxide, the kabuki make-up of choice for all lifeguards in the 1970’s. An occasional “No Running!” was blurted out from behind the cage and had no effect once we were safely out of sight. The lane lines doubled as sturgeon nets and sometimes if we were lucky we could swim down and find fresh sashimi stuck between the floats. There was an urban legend that the local fishermen used unruly 8 year olds as bait and we often wondered about the occasional speedo hanging limply from a lane line. The entire perimeter of the pool had a tiny urinal called a “gutter” that was deep and gurgled and gushed angrily with all sorts of unmentionable flotsam. (mostly band aids never actual guts). The gutters were so deep, once you were in the water you stayed in the

water until the coaches lowered the nets and you could clamber up like a rescued sailor set adrift on the ocean. The photo in this column was taken just a few moments after a layer of ice was skimmed off the surface and during this literal “golden hour” we swam as many laps as possible before the algae bloomed with the rising sun. For warmth during the swim a thons we layered our selves with bear grease (neck fat is best). We could swim for hours insulated in mother nature’s own meat flavored wetsuit. On the bottom was a crack at least six inches wide and several feet long. A colony of child size sea monkeys lived in the chasm snatching unwary swimmers into the depths. That’s what I heard. As you can see by the look on my face I had swallowed a wee bit too much pool water and judging by the color and clarity it was probably on one of those days when the filter was offline. So when the sun isn’t shining or the sets seem too long think about the hardships of those swimmers who went before you. Be glad your pool water is blue and the lanes lines don’t smell like fish. -d
