wouldimaginethateachofmypredecessorsaschairofSARGhave'takenup
stwishestoyouall,nrinriBrocklebank,SARGChair
IhaveworkedcloselywithSARGformanyyearsthroughmyworkattheSussexBiodiversityRecordCentre,soIcometotherolewithareasonablefamiliaritywiththeissuesandconcernsthatalocalARGfaces. IamhopingthatbecauseofmyinvolvementwithSussexWildlifeTrustwecantryandenhancetheopportunitiesforSARGandSWTtoworkcloselytogetheroncourses,eventsandpublicity.Ithebeard'withideasofwhattheywouldliketoseedevelopedoverthecomingmonthsandyears. Forme,somewhatpredictably,IwouldliketopromoterecordingamongsttheSARGmembers,butalsotodevelopopportunitiesformemberstogetinvolvedinAmphibianandReptilerecordingandconservationprojects.IwantSARGmembershiptoofferloadsofopportunitiesforgettingoutandaboutlookingatherps. Editorial
Battlesoverdevelopmenthavecontinuedthroughmuchofthepastyearwiththeconservationof
reptilesandamphibiansoftenconflictingwiththestatedneedformorenewand,particularly,
affordablehomes(thoughthethreatmayhaverecededsomewhatduringthecurrenteconomic
problems).
SARGhasoftenbeeninvolved. InUckfield,for
example,wherethereareproposalsforlarge
housingdevelopmentsatDownlandsFarmon
thewesternsideofthetownandBirdinEyeHill
ontheeasternside,severalSARGmembers
havegivenevidenceatthepublicinquiry,
particularlyinregardtoDownlandswhichhas
threereptileandfiveamphibianspecies
includinggreatcrestednewts,andmuch
informationhasbeensuppliedbymembersof
herpetileactivityinthegeneralarea.

AnewpondhasbeencreatedfortheprotectedspeciesonlandatOwlsburyOastinHadlowDown
Road,Crowborough,aspartofan840,000schemetobuildanewwaterpipelineinthearea. The
new"development"willprovideaperfecthabitatfortheGreatCrestedNewtswhicharethoughtto
alreadypopulateotherpondsinthearea.
NowSouthEastWatercontractorshavefinishedbuildingthepond,itwillbehandedoverto
residentandFarmManagerPhilipFermortomanage. GrahamWebb,InfrastructureDevelopment
ManageratSouthEastWater,said:GreatCrestedNewtsareaprotectedspeciessowhileour
pipelineroutespecificallyavoidedtheirbreedingareas,wewerekeentocreateanimprovedhabitat
nearbytohelpimprovetheirchancesofcolonisation. Duringthisimportantschemewe'veworked
hardtoensureconstructionandconservationgohandinhand,whichiswhywe'redelightedthe
farmmanagerhasalsopositivelyembracedtheideaofanewpondandweareconfidentitwill
thriveunderhisstewardship.

PhilipFermor,whoisalsoDeputyMayoronCrowboroughTownCouncil,said:'Whilethispipelineis
clearlyessentialforthecommunityandforthevillageofRotherfield,wearepleasedSouthEast
Waterisalsocontributingtothewidercommunityanditsenvironmentwiththeinstallationofthis
pond,asitwillhelpprotectanddevelopanimportanthabitatforendangerednativespecies.'
The
area
around
the
pond
will
be
allowed
to
develop
into
rough
grassland
and
scrub
so
it
merges
withtheancientwoodlandclosebytoprovidetherighthabitatforGreatCrestedNewts. Native
plantswillalsobeintroducedtoencouragethenewtstobreednextspring.
FromGreenBuilding,10September2008RegenerationagencyEnglishPartnershipsproposeddevelopmentatGraylingwellhospitalin
Chichestercouldcausealotofhomelessness fortheslowwormswhocurrentlyliveonthesite.
However,luckilyfortheleglesslizardstheNationalTrusthassteppedinwithanofferof
accommodation,whichisalsoamodelofhabitatregeneration.In2001LavingtonPlantationwas
donatedtotheNationalTrustontheconditionthatitwasrestoredtolowlandheath.Now,itisin
such
good
condition
it
has
been
chosen
as
the
perfect
location
to
re
home
the
hundreds
of
slow
wormswhichwillbedisplacedbythebuildingwork.

Aspokesmanforadeveloperhashitbackatclaimsthathisclienthasdestroyedauniquewildsitein
SeafordknownasTheDip.
PeoplelivingneartheareainHawthValleysayitsseveralacresoflandandadeeppondareavital
breedingareaforprotectedspecies. ButplannerAlanEdgar,whospeaksforthelandownerand
developerJohnRigden,saidtheresponsefromlocalresidentswas'atypicalNIMBYreaction'. 'My
clienthasclearedthesitebuthehasdoneitinaveryresponsibleandecologicallyconcernedway.
Hehasdonenothingillegal.'
Hesaidslowwormsandevenratshadbeencaughtproperlyandmoved. MrEdgarsaidhewouldbe
drawingupplansfor16housestoincludesomeaffordablehomesandanecologyparkwouldbe
proposedatthebottomofthesite.
TheDipisconnectedbyatunnelundertherailwaylinetotheOldBrickfieldsiteofnature
conservationinterest.Thisareaisalsoahavenforprotectedspecies,includinghedgehogs,slow
worms,grasssnakes,lizardsandtoads,whichusethetunneltoreachthepondinTheDip.
CampaignerssayanylossofspeciesherewouldthereforeaffectwildlifeintheBrickfield
conservationarea.StephenPlastow,aresidentwhoisleadingthecampaign,saidtwoprevious
planningapplicationsforTheDipwereturneddownfollowingobjectionsconcerningthewildlifeand
conservationvalueoftheland.
'Iflefttorecover,however,thelandwouldverysoonreturntoitsfullwildlifeandconservation
potential,andtheprotectedspeciessorecentlyevictedwouldreturn,'hesaid.
Itislikelythatthedeveloperwillapplyforplanningpermissiontobuildflats,houses,garagesand
anaccessroadontheslopeabovethepond.Atthisstage,weareurgingpeopletoexpresstheir

InearlyNovember,manyanimalswanttogointohibernation hedgehogsbutalsocreaturessuchas
slowwormsandgrasssnakes.Shelteredfromthewindandtherain,theycrawlintowarmanddry
pilesofwood. Theunlitbonfireisanoasisformanyanimalsinthewinterbutwhenallthose
fireworknightbonfiresarelitonNovember5,theyaresuddenlyburnedtodeath.
Mostcommunitiesstartbuildingtheirbonfiresmanyweeksahead. Itwouldbemuchbettertopile
themupatthelastminute. Itisincrediblytemptingtobeginpilingwoodupearlybutifitcanbe
storedsomewhereandmovedintoplaceonthedaythiscouldsavemanyanimal'slives.
Ifabonfirehasbeensittinginthesamespotfordays,organisersworriedaboutkillinghedgehogs
aswellassmalleranimalssuchasfrogsandtoadswhichhavehoppedandcrawledin could
assembleagroupofvolunteersandsimplymoveallthewood20maway.Itwouldn'ttakelongandit
wouldgivetheanimalsachancetoescape.
Youshouldalsoconsiderthesitingofyourbonfiretominimisetherisktowildlife placeitinopen
groundwellawayfromindigenoustrees,whichcangetburnedorscorchedbytheheat.
Fireworksareanotherproblemaltogetheralthoughtheymostlyaffectdogs,catsandlivestocksuch
ascattleandsheep.Keepingpetsindoorsisessentialandifyouleavethetelevisionon,orplaysome
music,thatcanhelpmufflethecracksandbangs.
MykidsaregoingtothevillagefireworkdisplaybutI'llstayinwithmyblacklabrador,Sloopy.She
shakesandgoesintoaterriblestatewhenshehearsanykindofbang.I'llcomfortherandstrokeher
andmakesureshefeelssecure.

Thehumblegoldfishisbeingblamedforspreadingadeadlyvirusthathaswipedouttensof
thousandsoffrogsinBritain. FishimportedfrombreedingfarmsintheUnitedStatesarebelievedto
beinfectedwithRedLegdisease,avirusthatcausesfrogs'limbstowasteawayandleadstotheir
bleedingtodeath.NowamajorEuropeanprojectisinvestigatinghowtheinternationaltradein
ornamentalfishiscausingthedevastatingdiseasetospread.

DrAndrewCunningham,fromtheZoologicalSocietyofLondonwhohasbeeninvestigatingthe
disease,said:"Oneofthemostcommonfactorsthathasbeenassociatedwiththevirusinfrogswas
deathsingoldfish,sothereisanepidemiologicallink.Goldfishmightbecarriersofthisvirus
RedLegdisease,namedaftertheredsoresitproducesonfrogs'legsbeforetheydie,was
introducedfromtheUnitedStatesnearlyadecadeagobutuntilrecentlyhadbeenconfinedto
south
east
England.
Scientists
now
claim
it
has
begun
spreading
west
and
north.
WhilethevirushasbeenfoundtobeharmfultoBritain'spopulationofcommonfrogs,itisalso
thoughttoinfectotheramphibianssuchasthecommontoadandnewt.
DrBarryHill,oftheCentreforFisheries,EnvironmentandAquacultureScienceattheDepartment
forEnvironment,FoodandRuralAffairs,said:"Wehavefoundthatalmostwithoutexception,the
virusispresentinthedeadfrogswearetesting.Itisthoughtthatthepettradeisthemainrouteof
entryforthisvirus."
LucyBenyon,wildlifeinformationofficeratconservationcharityFroglife,said:"Itcanbealarmingfor
peopletofindupto20frogsatatimedeadintheirgardensandwesometimeshavepeoplecontactingusintears."
OriginallybredfromChineseCruciancarpinthe11thcentury,thegoldfishwasintroducedtoEurope
inthe17thcenturyandisnowthemostcommonlykeptaquariumfish.
Contrarytopopularmyth,theyhavememoryspansofatleastthreemonths.
Frogproofskimmer
AningeniousAmerican,BrianMeagher,fromYorkinMaine,USA,hasinventedafrogproof
swimmingpoolskimmerthatishelpingtosavethelivesofmanyofouramphibianfriends. Apool
skimmer(asifyoudidntknow)isadevicethatdrawsinthesurfacewaterofapoolandpullsin
leavesandotherfloatingdebris,includingamphibians,throughasmallcollectingbaskettostopit
goingintothepump.
Thenewdeviceconsistsofaspiralescaperamp(justlikethoseinsomemultistoreycarparks)that
hangsdownbeneaththewater. Meagherreckonsatleast10millionfrogscouldbesavedintheUSA
everyyearthroughthisCritterSkimmerashehasbrandedit.

Frogsandotheramphibiansimperiledbyaworldwideepidemicofthechytridfungusmightbe
sparedbecauseofthebacterialivingontheirskin.NewresearchsuggeststhatPanamanianfrogs
withtherightmixofprobioticskinbacteriaseemtobeimmunefromthechytridfungus,blamedby
someforaglobaldieoffinamphibianpopulations.
JeniferBanningandReidHarris,fromJamesMadisonUniversityinHarrisonburg,Virginia,swabbed
theskinofseveralspeciesoffrogslivingthroughoutPanama.UponreturntotheUS,theresearchers
identifiedandgrewupsomeofthefrogskinbacteria.

Severalofthestrainsdestroyedchytridfungusinthelab.Andfrogpopulationsthathadthese
bacteriatendedtohavelowerratesofchytridinfection,Banning'steamfound.
Theliteraryherpetile
IrecentlyreadthehighlyregardedManandtheNaturalWorld. ChangingattitudesinEngland1500
1800byKeithThomas,publishedin1983(PenguinBooks,London). Heexplainshowmanyofour
currentattitudestonaturedevelopedandthereareseveralinterestingreferencestoherpetiles:
Thefrog,saidBishopBabington,is,asweallknow,afoulandfilthycreature,abidinginfoul
places,asbogsandmiryplashes,allthedaylong,andatnightpeepingoutwiththeheadabove
thewater,makingahatefulnoisewithmanyothersofhissorttillthedayappearagain.
ThomasPennantreportsthatin1768oneDevonshiregentryhouseholdhadbeenkeepinga
tametoadasthefamilypetforthepastthirtysixyears. Hecommendedthegoodsenseofthe
familywhichsoaredaboveallvulgarprejudices,andnotedthatevenladiessofarconquered
thehorrorsinstilledintothembynursesastodesiretoseeit.
Intheseventeenthcenturyitbecameincreasinglycommontomaintainthatnatureexistedfor
Godsgloryandthathecaredasmuchforthewelfareofplantsandanimalsasforman. And
duringtheCivilWarthereweresectarieswhotookthisviewtoitslogicalconclusion. Godloves
creaturesthatcreeponthegroundaswellasthebestsaints,saidone,andthereisno
differencebetweenthefleshofamanandthefleshofatoad.
Wedisputein[the]schools,wroteJohnBulwerin1653,whether,ifitwerepossibleformanto
doso,itwerelawfulforhimtodestroyanyonespeciesofGodscreatures,thoughitwerebut
thespeciesoftoadsandspiders,becausethisweretakingawayonelinkofGodschain,onenote
ofhisharmony.
