The New York Giants (0-‐0) travel to Florida to play the Jacksonville Jaguars (0-‐0) on Friday, August 10, in their first game of the 2012 preseason.
The Series The preseason series between the Giants and the Jaguars is tied at 3-‐3 entering Friday’s game. The Giants are 1-‐2 at Jacksonville in the preseason, with their lone win, 24-‐17, coming in the first preseason game between the teams on Aug. 2, 1996. This will be Tom Coughlin’s first time coaching a preseason game in Jacksonville, where he was the head coach from 1994-‐2002. The Giants lead the regular season series, 3-‐2. The teams’ most recent matchup occurred on Nov. 28, 2010, when Coughlin led the Giants to a 24-‐20 victory over his former team. This is the first head coaching matchup between Coughlin and Mike Mularkey, who takes over in 2012 as just the third head coach in Jaguars franchise history.
Last Meeting In Week 12 of the 2010 NFL regular season, the Giants defeated the Jaguars, 24-‐20, at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. Lawrence Tynes opened the scoring by kicking a 22-‐yard field goal less than three minutes into the game. A 5-‐yard touchdown run by Rashad Jennings gave the Jaguars a 7-‐3 lead at the end of the first quarter. Josh Scobee kicked a 22-‐yard field to begin the second quarter, but after a 7-‐play, 64-‐yard drive, Tynes made his second field goal of the day, from 29
yards out. Leading 10-‐6, the Jaguars extended their lead to 11 when David Garrard scored on a 5-‐yard touchdown run with 19 seconds left in the first half. Tynes’ third field goal, a 28-‐yarder, cut the Giants’ deficit to 17-‐9. Eli Manning threw a 26-‐yard touchdown pass to Mario Manningham with 13:42 remaining in the fourth quarter, and Ahmad Bradshaw converted the ensuing 2-‐point conversion to even the game, 17-‐17.
Scobee kicked a field goal to give the Jaguars a 20-‐17 lead, but Manning responded by leading the Giants on a 6-‐play 69-‐yard drive that ended with the game-‐winning 32-‐yard touchdown pass to Kevin Boss. That touchdown marked the 20th game-‐winning drive of Eli Manning’s career.
After Antrel Rolle recovered a fumble with 1:25 remaining, the Giants ran out the clock to preserve the 24-‐20 victory. Although they had 23 fewer plays than the Jaguars (73-‐50), the Giants produced 361 yards of total offense, 33 more than the Jaguars. Manning completed 14 of 24 passes for 226 yards and two touchdowns. The Giants’ receiving corps was very balanced, with 6 different players making a reception. Rolle (fumble recovery), Terrell Thomas (INT), and Jason Pierre-‐Paul (2 sacks) were all instrumental for the defense in the Giants victory.

2011 Preseason The Giants finished the 2011 preseason with a 2-‐2 record, with losses to the Carolina Panthers (20-‐10) and the New York Jets (17-‐3). The Giants’ preseason victories came against the Chicago Bears (41-‐13) and New England Patriots (18-‐17). The Giants outscored their opponents 72-‐67 in the preseason. The 41-‐point scoring output against the Bears was the Giants’ highest preseason total since 1989, when they defeated the Kansas Chiefs, 45-‐7, on their way to a 3-‐1 finish.

He has also led the Giants to two NFC Championship games, making him just one of six coaches in NFL history to lead a team to the conference championship game in both conferences. From 1996-‐1999, Coughlin led the Jaguars to four consecutive postseason berths, and is one of only three coaches in NFL history to accomplish that feat with two different teams. During his tenure, Coughlin coached the Jaguars to a 68-‐60 record, plus a 4-‐4 postseason record.
What’s On Tap for 2012?
METLIFE BOWL
The New York Football Giants will take on the New York Jets on Saturday, August 18 in the second annual “MetLife Bowl,” in Week 2 of the 2012 preseason. The Jets won the inaugural “MetLife Bowl” in Week 3 of the 2011 preseason, 17-‐3. The “MetLife Bowl” refers to the annual preseason game between the two New York franchises, with both teams battling for the Snoopy Trophy. Snoopy is the brand icon for MetLife, a New York City-‐based insurance company.
KICKOFF WEEKEND RECORDS
New York Giants Head Coach Tom Coughlin is 10-‐6 in Kickoff Weekend games. With a .625 winning percentage, Coughlin ranks 10th among active coaches. Coughlin is one of the four active coaches to win 10 Kickoff Weekend games and own a Kickoff Weekend percentage of .600 or better. The other three coaches in the elite group are Washington’s Mike Shanahan, New England’s Bill Belichick, and St. Louis’ Jeff Fisher.
COUGHLIN ENTERS 9th SEASON WITH GIANTS
Tom Coughlin is beginning his ninth season as head coach of the Giants in 2012. Coughlin’s 74 regular-‐season victories are the third-‐highest total among the franchise’s head coaches, trailing only Steve Owen (153) and Bill Parcells (77). Coughlin is tied with Parcells for the most postseason victories, with eight. With his victory in Super Bowl XLVI, Coughlin became the oldest head coach to win the Super Bowl, at 65 years, and 158 days old. Coughlin is striving to lead the Giants to their third Super Bowl in six seasons, a feat that has only been achieved four times in NFL history.
PIERRE-‐PAUL , TUCK, AND UMENYIORA With ends Jason Pierre-‐Paul, Osi Umenyiora, and Justin Tuck, the Giants have arguably one of the NFL’s best defensive line combinations. Entering his third season in the NFL, Jason Pierre-‐Paul will look to build on his stellar 2011 performance, in which he recorded 86 tackles and 16.5 sacks (ranked 4th in the NFL). Justin Tuck tallied 37 tackles and 5 sacks, while only playing in 12 games in to the 2011 regular season. Osi Umenyiora, who played just nine games in the 2011 regular season due to injury, still compiled 25 tackles and nine sacks despite limited minutes. All three are healthy and ready for the 2012 season.
ELI MANNING
Eli Manning broke numerous Giants’ records in 2011, including passing-‐yards (4,933), pass attempts (589), and pass completions (359). The 99-‐yard touchdown to Victor Cruz in the win over the Jets on December 24 broke his previous club record for longest completion. Eli has started the last 119 regular-‐season games for the Giants, the longest streak among active quarterbacks, and the 3rd-‐longest in NFL history. In 2011, Eli Manning set an NFL record with 15 fourth-‐quarter touchdown passes, beating the previous record of 14, which was held by Johnny
Unitas in 1959, and Eli’s older brother, Peyton Manning in 2002.
PLAYERS TO LOOK OUT FOR
IN 2012
HAKEEM NICKS Entering his fourth year in the NFL, Hakeem Nicks has established himself as one of the top receivers in the league. In 2011, Nicks had 76 catches for 1,192 yards, and 7 touchdowns. After his 1,052 receiving yards in 2010, Nicks became the 3rd receiver in Giants’ franchise history to record back-‐to-‐back 1,000 yard seasons (Del Shofner and Amani Toomer). Nicks led the Giants in all three major receiving categories in the 2011 playoffs, with 28 catches for 444 yards and 4 touchdowns. Nicks and Victor Cruz became the first receiving duo in Giants’ franchise-‐history to both record 1,000 yards in the same season.
VICTOR CRUZ Victor Cruz, signed by the Giants as an undrafted free agent on April 25, 2010, had a record-‐breaking performance in 2011. The third-‐year star compiled a franchise-‐record 1,536 receiving yards, and a team-‐high 82 receptions. Cruz was named a second-‐team All-‐Pro receiver in 2011, and tied the league-‐record for longest touchdown reception when he caught a short pass from Eli Manning and turned it into a 99-‐yard touchdown on December 24, 2011, in a win over the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium.

Head Coaches
Tom Coughlin NFL Record: 154-‐121 overall NFL Head Coach: 17th year College: Syracuse University
The 2011 season solidified Tom Coughlin’s standing as one of the finest and most successful coaches in NFL history.
The Giants finished 9-‐7 and won the NFC East championship before winning four postseason games, including their second Super Bowl in five seasons, a 21-‐17 victory over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLVI. Coughlin improved to 2-‐0 in Super Bowls as a head coach. He is the 13th coach to win multiple Super Bowls and is one of 18 coaches with a perfect Super Bowl record. In 16 seasons as a NFL head coach, Coughlin is 142-‐114 (.557) in the regular season and 12-‐7 (.632) in the postseason for an overall record of 154-‐121 (.560). The 142 regular season victories tie him with new St. Louis Coach Jeff Fisher for 19th place on the all-‐time list. Coughlin’s 154 total victories tie him with Hall of Famer Marv Levy for 17th on the NFL’s career list. Coughlin has led the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Giants to five division titles and nine playoff berths.
Coughlin is also one of the very best coaches in the Giants’ 88-‐year history. The 2012 season is Coughlin’s ninth with the Giants, making him the second-‐longest tenured coach in franchise history. Only Hall of Fame Coach Steve Owen, who reigned for 24 seasons from 1930-‐53, led the team for a longer time period.
Coughlin’s 74 regular-‐season Giants victories are the third-‐highest total among head coaches in team history, behind only Owen (153) and Bill Parcells (77). His eight Giants postseason victories tie him with Parcells for the franchise record. Coughlin has led the Giants to two NFC East titles and five playoff berths in eight years. In 2011, Coughlin reached a number of impressive coaching milestones. His 12 postseason victories tie him with former Pittsburgh Coach Bill Cowher for the sixth-‐highest total in NFL history. Coughlin and Bill Belichick are the only two active coaches on the list.
The 2011 Giants emulated the 2007 championship team by winning two road postseason games, the NFC Divisional Playoff in Green Bay and the conference championship game in San Francisco. Coughlin has nine postseason victories away from home -‐ seven on the road and two neutral site Super Bowls. Seven of those nine victories were with the Giants in 2007 and 2011. The Giants have won seven consecutive postseason games away from home (five on the road, two neutral sites). Both streaks – five consecutive on the road, seven in a row away from home – are NFL postseason records. Coughlin’s seven career road playoff victories tie Hall of Famer Tom Landry for the most in NFL history.
Coughlin is 7-‐4 on the road in the playoffs (5-‐1 with the Giants). Landry was 7-‐7.
Coughlin is 7-‐3 in postseason games against teams he faced in the regular season, including victories over 2011 foes Green Bay, San Francisco and New England.
Coughlin was 65 years, 158 days old when Super Bowl XLVI was played on Feb. 5, making him the oldest coach to win a Super Bowl and the second oldest to guide his team to the title game. Buffalo’s Marv Levy was 68 years old when he coached the last of his four Super Bowls in January 1993. Coughlin is also the fourth-‐oldest coach to win a Super Bowl as a result of his team’s Super Bowl XLII victory.
Coughlin improved to 2-‐2 in conference championship games, including 2-‐0 with the Giants. The 2011 Giants gained a franchise-‐record 6,161 yards. The former mark of 6,085 was set in 2010. Those are the only two 6,000-‐yard seasons in Giants history.
The Giants shattered their franchise record with 4,734 net passing yards. The former mark of 4,019 was set in 2009. Those are the only two 4,000-‐yard passing seasons in Giants history. In 2011, the Giants also set a team record with 359 pass completions and had at least 200 passing yards in every game for the first time in their history.
Last year, the Giants won five regular-‐season games in which they trailed in the fourth quarter, tying the franchise record they set in 2002. They tied Denver and Cincinnati for the NFL’s second-‐highest total. Arizona led the league with six.
In the last six seasons, the Giants’ regular-‐season records have been 11-‐5, 8-‐8, 10-‐6, 12-‐4, 8-‐8, 10-‐6 and 9-‐7. Their six-‐year streak without a losing record is the Giants’ longest since they had 10 in a row from 1954-‐63.
Coughlin first ascended to the pinnacle of his profession in the 2007 season when he led the Giants to a victory in Super Bowl XLII. The Giants, heavy underdogs entering the game, scored two fourth-‐quarter touchdowns to defeat the previously undefeated New England Patriots, 17-‐14. In 2011, the Giants won their fourth Lombardi Trophy, and second under Coughlin, with an unexpected late-‐season run. A loss to the Washington Redskins on Dec. 18 left the Giants with a 7-‐7 record. It was their last defeat of the season. Six days later, the Giants defeated the Jets, 29-‐14. A week later, they crushed Dallas, 31-‐14, to clinch the NFC East title, their eighth division championship since the 1970 merger. The Giants then defeated Atlanta, Green Bay and San Francisco to advance to Super Bowl XLVI, where they found a familiar foe in New England, a team they had defeated three months earlier. This time, the Giants scored with 57 seconds remaining and held off a late Patriots charge to win, 21-‐17.
Coughlin’s 142 regular-‐season victories place him tied with Fisher for third among current NFL head coaches, behind New England’s Bill Belichick (175) and Washington’s Mike Shanahan. (157). Coughlin is the only one of those four coaches to have coached an expansion team. With 154 total victories, Coughlin is third among active coaches, behind Belichick (192) and Shanahan (165).
The Giants finished the season with 46 sacks, their highest total since the 2007 Super Bowl champions led the NFL with 53. The Giants held their opponents to an NFL-‐best 31.7 success rate on third down conversion attempts (66 of 208). In 2011, the Giants scored 47 touchdowns – one less than they had in 2010, which was their highest total since the
1985 team scored 48. Last year, Ahmad Bradshaw rushed for nine touchdowns and Cruz tied him for the team lead with nine receiving scores. The previous season, Nicks caught 11 touchdown passes and Mario Manningham added nine as they became the first pair of Giants with at least nine touchdown catches since 1967, when Homer Jones had a franchise-‐record 13 and Aaron Thomas had nine. In addition, Brandon Jacobs rushed for nine touchdowns and Bradshaw eight, the first time the Giants had two backs run for at least eight scores in the same season.
Coughlin entered the NFL as the Philadelphia Eagles’ wide receivers coach in 1984 and 1985. He held the same position with the Green Bay Packers in 1986 and 1987 before moving to the Giants for a three-‐year stint.
Coughlin was a standout scholastic star at Waterloo (N.Y.) Central High School, where the football stadium now bears his name. He was a three-‐year letterman at Syracuse for legendary coach Ben Schwartzwalder from 1965-‐67. A wingback, Coughlin played in a backfield with All-‐America backs and Pro Football Hall of Famers Larry Csonka and Floyd Little. As a senior in 1967, Coughlin broke Syracuse’s single-‐season pass receiving record. That year, he won Syracuse’s Orange Key Award as the university’s outstanding scholar-‐athlete. He graduated in 1968 with a bachelor’s degree in education and received a master’s degree in education the following year.
Thomas Richard Coughlin was born on Aug. 31, 1946 in Waterloo. He is the oldest of seven children. Coughlin and his wife Judy, have two daughters, Keli and Kate; two sons-‐in-‐law named Chris; two sons, Brian and Tim; two daughters-‐in-‐law, Andrea (Tim’s wife) and Susie (Brian’s wife); and 11 grandchildren, Emma Rose, Dylan, Shea, Cooper, Caroline, Marin, Wesley, Brennon, Clara, Walker and Ally Ann.
Coughlin is one of just six active coaches to lead a team to a Super Bowl victory. The others are Belichick, Shanahan, Pittsburgh’s Mike Tomlin, New Orleans’ Sean Payton and Green Bay’s Mike McCarthy. Coughlin, Belichick and Payton are former Giants assistant coaches. Payton will miss the entire 2012 season while serving an NFL suspension.
The two championship seasons, division titles, postseason berths, and streak of seven seasons at .500 or better are successes in a Giants revival that began when Coughlin was named the 16th head coach in franchise history on Jan. 6, 2004. The Giants won only four games in the season prior to his arrival. A longtime successful head coach on the collegiate level and in the NFL, Coughlin was the wide receivers coach of the Giants when they won Super Bowl XXV in 1990. When he returned to the team as head coach, Coughlin quickly put the team back on a path that would ultimately lead to two more Super Bowl victories.
The Giants improved from four to six to 11 victories and the NFC East title in Coughlin’s first two seasons with the team. In 2006, they went 8-‐8 and earned an NFC Wild Card playoff berth. The following season, the Giants were 10-‐6 in the regular season and again reached postseason play as a Wild Card, which served as a springboard to the team’s Super Bowl victory. In 2008, they were again one of the NFL’s very best teams at 12-‐4 and reached the playoffs for the first time following a Super Bowl appearance. Two years later, the Giants were only the sixth double-‐digit victory team to fall short of the postseason since the NFL’s realignment in 2002. Last season, they had one less regular season victory, a fact long forgotten when Coughlin held the Lombardi Trophy on the podium in the center of Lucas Oil Field on Feb. 5.
Coughlin twice led the Jacksonville Jaguars to the AFC Championship Game prior to leading the Giants to victories in two NFC Championship Games. He is one of just six coaches to lead teams to a championship game in each conference since the 1970 merger. The others are Parcells and Dan Reeves (both former Giants coaches), as well as Chuck Knox, Jon Gruden and Tony Dungy.
The 2011 Giants were unique Super Bowl champions. They were the first team to win the title after a) losing seven games in the regular season; b) losing four consecutive games in the regular season; c) finishing with a negative scoring differential (394-‐400) in the regular season, and d) finishing last in the NFL in rushing in the regular season. They did so thanks to the resilience, toughness and tenacity that has been the hallmarks of Coughlin-‐coached teams. In their four postseason victories, the Giants defeated 10-‐6 Atlanta, 15-‐1 Green Bay, 13-‐3 San Francisco and 13-‐3 New England to become the first team to beat four teams in the playoffs with better regular season records. The Giants are the first team to twice win four games in a single postseason (doing it in 2007 and 2011).
Defensively, the 2011 Giants allowed only an average of 14 points in four postseason games, significantly below the 25 points a game given up in the regular season. In 2010, the Giants allowed 347 points, 80 fewer than they gave up the previous season.
Mike Mularkey NFL Record: 14-‐18 overall NFL Head Coach: 3rd year College: University of Florida
Mike Mularkey was named head coach of the Jaguars on January 11, 2012. Mularkey has 18 years of NFL coaching experience including two seasons as a head coach and eight as an offensive coordinator. In five of the eight seasons he was a coordinator Mularkey’s team went to the playoffs. Prior to Jacksonville, his previous coaching stops were at Tampa Bay, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, Miami and Atlanta. Mularkey is the fourth head coach in Jaguars history, including Mel Tucker who served as interim head coach for the final five games of the 2011 season.
A veteran of 27 years in the NFL, Mularkey played nine seasons as a tight end for the Minnesota Vikings and Pittsburgh Steelers. The Ft. Lauderdale, Florida native attended the University of Florida, where he played tight end before being drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in 1983.
Mularkey, 50, spent the past four seasons (2008-‐11) as offensive coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons, a team that advanced to the postseason in three of those four seasons. The Falcons produced a 43-‐21 mark in Mularkey’s tenure, the fifth-‐best record in the NFL. Over the four seasons the Falcons offense ranked ninth in total yards (354.8 per game) in the NFL, seventh in points (24.5), eighth in rushing yards (125.7), third in fewest turnovers (84), fourth in fewest sacks allowed (93) and sixth in third down conversions (44.2). The Falcons produced the top two single-‐season totals in team history for yards per game during Mularkey’s tenure (2008, 2011).
In three of the four seasons under Mularkey, the Falcons offense produced a 3,000-‐ yard passer, a 1,000-‐yard receiver and a 1,000-‐yard rusher in the same year. Under Mularkey’s tutelage since 2008, quarterback Matt Ryan ranked seventh in passing yards (14,238) and sixth in touchdown passes (95), and had the league’s fifth-‐lowest interception percentage (2.3). Ryan has thrown for 29 and 28 touchdown passes the last two seasons, two of the four highest marks in team history. Only Joe Flacco (44) produced more wins than Ryan (43) in his first four seasons as a starter in NFL history.
In 2010, Mularkey was named “Coordinator of the Year” by The Sporting News. That season the Falcons set a franchise record for first downs (353) and scored the third-‐ most points (414, 25.8 avg.) in team history. The Falcons ranked third in the NFL in time of possession (32:15), third down conversions (46.7) and scoring efficiency (scoring on 70 of 178 possessions) while setting the franchise record for fewest turnovers in a season with 17. Six offensive players were named to the Pro Bowl including Ryan for the first time. Ryan established a team record with 357 completions and threw for 3,705 yards with 28 touchdowns and only nine interceptions. While White led the NFL in receptions with 115, Turner led the NFC with 1,389 rushing yards.
Prior to joining the Falcons, Mularkey spent two seasons with the Miami Dolphins, as offensive coordinator in 2006 and tight ends coach in 2007.
Mularkey served as head coach of the Buffalo Bills from 2004-‐05, leading the club to a 14-‐18 overall record. In his first season he directed the Bills to their first winning sea-‐ son in five years with a 9-‐7 record as the club tallied wins in nine of its final 12 games. The 2004 campaign is the last time the Bills have posted a winning record.
In 2001 Mularkey was named Assistant Coach of the Year by the Pro Football Writers of America. That season he tutored quarterback Kordell Stewart, who threw for 3,109 yards and was voted to the Pro Bowl. Mularkey played a key role in the development of quarterback Tommy Maddox’s career in 2002. After not playing in the NFL for five years, Maddox threw for 2,836 yards with 20 touchdowns and set a single-‐season franchise record with a 62.1 completion percentage to earn NFL Comeback Player of the Year honors.
Mularkey entered the NFL coaching ranks in 1994 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as quality control coach before he was promoted to tight ends coach the following season. In his only season working with the Buccaneers tight ends, Jackie Harris had a team-‐high 62 receptions for 751 yards to become one of only three tight ends in team history to lead the team in receiving. Mularkey began his coaching career in 1993 at Concordia College where he oversaw the offensive line.
On June 25, 2012, Mularkey was named to the Advisory Board for Ronald McDonald Charities in Jacksonville.
A graduate of Northeast High School in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, Mularkey played quarterback and earned a scholarship to the University of Florida. He was a three-‐year letterman at tight end for the Gators from 1979-‐82. He and his wife, Betsy, have two sons, Patrick, a strength assistant with the Jaguars, and Shane, a student at the University of North Carolina.
