President’s Message

Greetings Fellow Gyro's:

In traveling around our fraternity and in reading the newsletters from the clubs, I am finding an alarming trend in our organization. That is the lack of members willing to step up and take an active role in leadership in their clubs and on the district level. Why is this? Why aren't some Gyro's willing to step up and help their clubs or districts?

Let's explore some obvious reasons:

“When I joined I was told I didn't have to do anything” - I know a lot of us are retired from our business life and after the day to day stresses of the business world want to kick back and enjoy the fellowship without the responsibilities of leadership. But look closely at your club. Are there areas that you personally would like to see changes? Are there things that you would do differently? Here is where your experience in the business world could come in handy.

“My club is run by one guy” - Unfortunately, this is true all too many times in Gyro. But is this one guy “running the club” doing so because the members in the club don't step up and offer to help? Why don't you, as a friend, offer to help out. You just may be surprised that the answer would be a welcomed “yes”.

“I have no idea what the club officer responsibilities are” - Are the officer duties spelled out in your club? Has anybody in the past taken the time to write out what is expected of each club officer as to duties and responsibilities? If not, this could be a good time to bring this up at your next business meeting and ask why your club doesn't have a manual, especially if your club is having trouble getting members to step up and assume leadership positions. This could be a good place to start to get members interested in their club operations.

“It would be too time consuming” - Time is the one thing that always seems to be in short supply, especially since retirement and I, like a lot of people, seemingly find myself busier than ever before. I'll be honest here and say that as president of Gyro, I find it does take a lot of my time. But the presidency of Gyro is a whole different ball game than president of a local club. When I went through my club chairs I was employed and found that it only took a few hours a month at the most. I'm sure most of us are good at budgeting our time and to help our own club should not be all that time consuming.

I haven't touched serving at the district level. I know that serving as a district officer does take more time than at the club level. There is the travel of course and keeping the communication lines open with the other officers in your district and the club presidents. And of course the travel to the interim and annual International conventions. But attending the conventions is really where you find the true meaning of being a Gyro. Personally, since I started going through the district chairs and attending my first international meetings, Linda and I met and formed lasting friendships that continue to this day.

I'm just touching the surface here and I know it. But the fact remains that too many of us are willing to let somebody else to the heavy lifting and sit back and do nothing to help. Think about it; you may find it rewarding to help out your club and also find it more fun than you imagined.

See you all in Savannah in February.

Yours in Gyro Friendship: Chris Snyder, President, Gyro International

HALLOWEEN: By the time this issue is online, it will be well into the month of October and almost time to ask our aging bodies to once again, get up and down to answer the door to view toddlers dressed in outrageous costumes!

One of the world’s oldest holidays, Halloween didn’t start out as a holiday for costumes, trick-or-treating or carving pumpkins. The Halloween celebrated today has elements of several different religious and cultural traditions. The name Halloween is an abbreviation of “All Hallows Eve,” a traditional name for the Catholic holiday of All Saints’ Day.

Halloween wouldn’t be what it is today if not for the Celtic holiday of Samhain, an ancient celebration of the spirits of the dead. A Roman festival called Feralia is another Halloween inspiration. Although Feralia occurred in February, it was a public festival where citizens made offerings and sacrifices to calm the spirits of the dead so they wouldn’t haunt the living.

The original Celtic holiday of Samhain occurred November 1, not October 31. Samhain was one of the most important holidays for Celtic people, and its festivals were conducted by their priests, the Druids. On Samhain, the Celtic people believed that the spirits of those who had died over the course of the year would mingle with the living before traveling on to the afterlife. In addition to the spirits of departed souls, other supernatural creatures like fairies and demons came out “to play” during Samhain. Festivals and celebrations were meant to aid the good souls on their way, and keep bad spirits from doing harm to the living. Samhain also celebrated the harvest, and foods associated with fall, such as apples, pumpkins, spices and cider, were part of the

early traditional celebrations. (So much for the trivia this time.)

FOUNDER’S NIGHT: Of course, once Halloween is over, it is time for clubs to plan to celebrate a traditional “Founder’s Night” event. For many clubs, this occurs in November - although for some it varies from mid-October through November. For some clubs it is an internal event, for others an attempt is made to join with other nearby clubs for an evening of friendship and the opportunity to reflect and remember our roots in Gyro. In may cases it also becomes a social event by inviting the ladies.

Even though we strive to make our organization more in tune with current lifestyles in order to attract younger members, I think it imperative that we set aside a time to not forget our three founders - Paul Schwan, Gus Handerson and Ed Kagy and what their association brought into all of our lives with our membership in Gyro International. These three men and their associates were recently out of college and were striving to make a place for themselves within the business world. None-the-less, they never lost sight of the value of true friendship. And look at what that has produced - an organization that still flourishes more than 100 years later. Truthfully, we are weakened somewhat in numbers, but that can be overcome with resolve. Perhaps participating in a Founder’s Night will re-energize that resolve? A resolve that we all must give back something to the organization from which we have received so much. Resolve in the form of not just attending, but active participation. Inviting others to enjoy what you have enjoyed.

If your club does not celebrate a Founder’s Night, ask your officers, “why not?”

Friendship consists in forgetting what one gives, and remembering what one receives - Alexandre Dumas Père

Mary Ann and I traveled to Tokyo, Japan to meet the new Tokyo Gyro Club members and for Installation of Officers. It was a busy few days! We were given an all day tour by Masa, Aiko and Yamoto. We visited the famous Tokyo fish market (Tsukiji), temples, shrines and the Imperial Palace. On Saturday we took the train to the coast and met the Gyro group for a beach party. Families joined in and there was lots of chatting as well as a few strenuous volleyball games. The Gyro flag waved proudly on the beach! We completed the afternoon with a lovely traditional Japanese dinner at a near-by restaurant. On Sunday August 30, club members gathered for theInstallation. Everyone was very excited, especially when they unwrapped the charter, the Gyro Gong with a mallet. The biggest hit were the Gyros receiving their name-tags and certificates. The officers inducted are as follows:President: Kay Ogiyama, Vice-President: Chad Kreller, Secretary: Emmet Parker,Treasurer: Thomas Partridge. Chad pointed out that Masa at 21 years of age may be the youngest Gyro and we all agreed! The meeting was followed by a lovely dinner at a Korean restaurant. Dale and I were very grateful for the hospitality during the visit. It is uncommon for people to be invited into one's home in Japan as accommodations are very small and different. We stayed with Thomas Partridge for 2 nights and one night with Chad Kreller and his family. They all have the true Gyro spirit!

District ii convention incluDeDmay interesting activities

Linda and I had the pleasure to attend the District II Convention the weekbefore Labor Day. It was held at the Wildwood Lodge in Clive, Iowa. Thenearby Des Moines club was the host. Wendell Saunders was the chairman.

The D-II officers for the coming year are:

• Neil Baker, Governor• Bernie Saylor, Past Governor• Dave Langfitt, Secretary-Treasurer

All three of these men have been serving D-II for a number of years. Neilis now in his third stint as Governor, Bernie just completed his second stintas Governor, and Dave previously served as Governor. Unfortunately no-body else has stepped up to carry the torch. The district needs a few goodmen to take on the responsibility.

On Saturday afternoon, the men were treated to a tour of the Albaugh CarMuseum, a private museum dedicated to the Chevrolet Automobile.

It has one Chevrolet from every year in which Chevys were produced, starting in 1912, through 1975. One room has a group of 1957 Chevy

convertibles in each of the colors available thatyear! Truly an impressive collection.

We also attended a half-hour golf seminar atthe Otter Creek Golf Course by the club pro, TomTays. It was very informative, but I’m not sure ithelped my game that much. My play hasn’tchanged at all since returning home.

All in all, the District II Convention was an enjoyable event. Linda and I met new friends, got“caught up” with old friends, and just had agreat time. It was a memorable Gyro weekend.

Monday found us at a lunch meeting with theDavenport club. President Manny Fritz invited usboth to the luncheon. After lunch, I installed theirnewest Gyro, Kent Huelsmeyer. Kent is the ninthnew member installed by Davenport this year.

Congratulations to Davenport on their member-ship drive, and thank you for your hospitality!

Following an afternoon with Neil Baker whogave us a tour of the Quad Cities, it was off to theClinton club, which is located a few miles northof town, off the main highway near the back -waters of the Mississippi River. They have theirown clubhouse where the members can relax andenjoy the company of their friends over a coupleof beers. That night’s fare included steaks and alot of fun and friendship. Many thanks to clubpresident Dan Blohm.

I especially want to thank Neil and LolitaBaker for taking Linda and I under their wings, for showing us around Davenport, and for arranging the meetings at the Davenport andClinton clubs.

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE FRIENDSHIP!

At the International Convention in Buffalo earlier this year, D-I Gov. Timothy W. Wright Sr. ofthe Painesville club was appointed to the new position of Director of Membership. Tim was thechairman of the New Era Committee. His ideasconcerning membership are an outgrowth of theNEC efforts over the past two years. I’ve askedhim to share some of these ideas here. More detailed articles will appear in the future issues ofthe GyroScope.

Okay, Let’s keep it simple …Gyros (and their ladies) are attracted to:1. People they like and admire, 2. An interesting schedule of events, venues, and meetings.

• Together this produces fun and reinforces friend-ship.• This is the reason our club exists, why men become Gyros!!!!• Clubs that accomplish both thrive. • Clubs without one, or both, do not.The fix? Club leaders that execute (not only talk

about)(1) a search for quality members; (2) consistently produce creative, fun and inter-

esting experiences for Gyros and their ladies. It’s very simple. However, it takes leadership, planning, dedica-

tion and effort. Learn how many clubs have increased member-

ship. Read the new 2015 survey “How They Did It,The Growing Gyro Clubs, Survey Results, OfficerComments” posted on the Gyro International web-site. For a digital copy contact:Timothy W. Wright, Sr. (Painesville)Gyro International Director of MembershipGovernor District [email protected]

President’s CupWinnipeg Golf Tournament

- submitted by Craig Cormacknd The annual golf tournament was held at the Rossmere Golf and Country Club on September 2 .

A total of 12 Gyro's and friends braved the sweltering heat to parcipate in this year's tournament. Amongst them were Gyro's President Bill, John Stordeur, Jim, Tyler Seman, Gary Read, Jamie Hay, Derek Hay, Craig Cormack. Also in aendance were Steve and his nephew Kevin, guests of Jim Perfanick. John Stordeur was joined by his guests Greg Romance, Bill Zonneveld and ex-Winnipeg Jet, Bill Lesuk. Greg Romance was kind enough to provide to free passes for green fees at the Rossmere Club which resulted in a draw for two prizes of $45.00 cash, the equivalent of the green fees. Following the tournament, the majority rered to the dining room for supper and a few libaons while President Bill applied the Callaway Handicap system to determine the winner of the President's Cup. Jamie Hay, last year's winner, produced the polished trophy complete with his name engraved upon it. The winner, according to the Callaway system, was none other than John Stordeur. John was quite ecstac and did not believe that he had won. Thereaer, the draw for the two $45.00 cash prizes was conducted with the winners being Tyler Seman and John Stordeur. John had to be pressured to accept the $45.00 as he drew his own name and didn't think it was fair to accept it especially since he had won the trophy. In addion to the trophy, other winners were: Craig, who won the longest drive prize, and Jim and Kevin who won prizes for closest to the pin. All in all, we had fantasc weather and a great group for a day of golf. Thanks to all for supporng this annual event.

Warm sun, waves lapping at the bedrock, loons calling in the bay, and the sounds of friends having a great time

together --what better way to spend an August weekend? Aug 7-9 was the annual Gyro Lake Weekend at Lake of the

Woods. This year a total of 24 Gyros and Gyrettes made it to the event. Thirteen local Lake of the Woods residents,

along with 11 city dwellers.

Al and Erica graciously opened up their docks and doors for the 11 guests, President Bill and Sandy Johnston; Mark

& Cec Rathwell; Craig and Sheryl Cormack; Derek Hay and his boat; Tyler and Crystal Seman, along with newborn

Jackson (8wks); and Ted and Annwyl Shewchuk of Red Lake, ON (McKenzie Island Club).

Their summer oasis affectionately known as 'Builtmore Lodge' served as the main gathering place for the weekend.

Guests arrived in waves (literally) to the island on Friday afternoon. Thanks to Captain Derek and co-Captain/bartender

Tyler for serving as a water taxi to and from the Keewatin Rec Centre landing. After visiting guests settled in, the circle

of Adirondack chairs on the dock (mostly handmade by Al himself an other family members) quickly became the

comfortable place to catch up and unwind with a cocktail or cold beer. Bob and Michelle Drew arrived by boat early

evening and joined the crew for the sandwich and salad bar dinner. Good times continued into the late evening with

stories and jokes being shared over drinks and music in the mosquito protected cabin.

The sun rose early at 'Builtmore Lodge', but nary a soul was to be seen stirring about. The quiet of the channel, the

warm sun and the obvious good time the day before ensured all guests had a great sleep-in. With enough time to enjoy

a healthy breakfast, the golfers made their way over to the mainland to put their skills to test, while the others remained

on the island to enjoy the day at lakeside. Golfers were Bill and Sandy Johnston; Craig and Sheryl Cormack; Jim and

Joan Perfanick; Derek Hay; Tyler Seman; Gary Read; and Bob Drew. For the golfers the sun was hot and the hills were

many. Those who remained on the island for the day sunbathed on the dock and visited with one another until noon

when Mark and Cec, Ted and Annwyl, Crystal and Jackson, and Al and Erica ventured by boat about 25 minutes to

Wiley Point Lodge for lunch. The patio was warm, meals were excellent, the beverages cold, and the conversation easy.

The boat ride gave visitors a chance to enjoy the lake, see the cabins of fellow Gryos as they cruised by, and to also

share stories about the lake.

Around 5:30, boats began to arrive to the island again, including a pontoon taxi with passengers Betty Gyles, Leona

Jarvis, and Don and Julie McInnes (all local residents). Shortly, they were followed by the returning golfers on Derek's

boat, Bill Appleby on his boat, Bob and Michelle Drew on their boat, Helen and Gary Read along with a guest on their

boat, and Jim and Joan Perfanick who caught a ride with a fellow Gyro as well. The dock became the popular greeting

and meeting place for everyone to catch up and share stories with appetizers and cocktails. Dinner of roasted pork and

array of complimentary dishes and salad was cooked to perfection by the hosts. The evening carried on with more

stories and visiting in the cabin looking out over the picturesque sunset on the channel.

Sunday morning the guests of Lodge packed up and joined the local residents at the cabin of Don and Julie McInnes

for a bountiful brunch - fruits to baked goods and everything in between. The pace was slower with friends exploring

the garden, lounging on the deck, dipping toes in the water on the sandy beach, complete with a Cribbage challenge

between Julie (Al and Erica's guest) and Bill Johnston. There could not have been a better way to have spent the last

day together.

The feeling of the weekend could be compared to your favourite family gathering – chaotic and entertaining all at

the same time with friends in every room inside and out, laughing, sharing, and experiencing life together. Friendship

and fun at its best.

Special thanks to Al and Erica for their gracious hospitality throughout the weekend, along with special helpers Sam and Aviv (Al's

eldest son and his wife), and especially Julie (Al and Eric's summer guest). Special thanks also to Don and Julie along with

members of the McInnes Clan for hosting brunch on Sunday morning.

Gyro's New Mission StatementYou helped create it!

- submitted by Randy Tarrier

Gyro International has a new Mission Statement, along with supporting statements of Vision & Values. As the Storyline suggests - you helped create it at the Annual General Meeting in Buffalo June 22-28!

The Mission Statement Committee: Tim Wright, Alan Pentney, & Randy Tarrier (Chair), held a seminar with about 30 other Gyros during one of our scheduled training sessions. The discussion lasted over 2 hours; the results were fantastic!

The group session began with a presentation on Mission statement “best practices,” and a short “how to write” a Mission statement. In a nutshell, it means that once we determined our organization's key values, we established the Vision statement as “our desired future position,” based on those values. The Mission statement defines who we are, what we want to be known for, and its purpose is “how we make our vision a reality.” Using the current Mission, Vision, & Values statements as a basis, the group submitted their suggestions as to what best described the intent of those ideas in up-to-date language. There was some healthy debate over content & wording, but eventually, the group arrived at a consensus.
