A Word From Our Treasurer Treasurer Report Well, here it is July already and half the month is gone by. We have one (1) new member and 0ne (1) paid ad. The door prize was not awarded because the winner did not attend the meeting. We have applied for a Grant for the graffiti program. Let's hope we get it. This would help off set the cost of the equipment by $2000. Here is some info on some of the expenditures for this year to date. This is for postage and labeling and the Fees to the IRS and state filing fee and attorney fees. ($524.00.) This figure

does not include the $514.00 we prepaid for the printing of the newsletter last Oc-tober. So, as you can see it takes a good chunk to keep the NRCA, INC op-erating during the year. We are donating $250.00 to the YFS for swim passes to Horace Mann Pool. The YFS can get matching funds for this donation, so this makes the dol-lar go a little bit farther. We are waiting on some info from the Boy's Club so we can do the same thing for them. This why we have to keep some funds put away in a savings account to

pay for operating expenses for at least one year if things go awry. I hope this answers some ques-tions for everyone. Respectfully, Ken Cavenah, Treasurer

From the desk of Our VP Quiet Reflection I wasn’t sure what to write about there are so many things I think about and so many things I just don’t do anything about. Sometimes I just feel overwhelmed and I don’t know where to start. Then I feel like I’m only one person and “What can I do?” I’m guessing many others feel as I do. I think many people feel that they just don’t make a difference. So what can I do? I’ve found that, for me, joining the NRCA gives me a “vehicle”

to make a difference. How you might ask? I get to discuss ideas and thoughts I have about changing things I feel strongly about. I get to hear about new ideas and con-cerns. The NRCA offers me the op-portunity to do that. I feel that when I speak I’m only one voice in the wilder-ness but when I go to a NRCA meeting, I am a part of larger chorus. Numbers do make a difference! Do you feel strongly about something? Maybe you are concerned about the continued exis-

tence of the Horace Mann swimming pool, or frustrated with graffiti you’ve seen in the neighborhood, or maybe you just want to be part of a larger “chorus”. Come to an NRCA meeting, bring a friend or neighbor. PS. Personally I sing best when I sing Tenor,,,, ten or twelve miles away or at least that is what my friends tell me. ;-) Edward Trigg

Here is a list of neighborhood watch groups in our reading area. We encourage you to attend and become active in the community. Get to know your neighbors and their concerns. You may find you have a lot in common and working together you can make a difference in the appearance of your neighborhood , and cut down on such things as graffiti, break-ins and vandalism. Remember the ones who do these things often work together as groups or gangs so it may take us work-ing together to put a stop to their ac-tions. A Bit of History While doing some research on the history of the NRCA, Doug Dlugosz came across enough information to compile this list of past Officers of the NRCA. He also found some of the minutes from one of the meetings in 1951. How interesting it would be to read these old minutes and see what was important to the residence of North Rapid over 65 years ago. I wonder what attendance at the meetings was. How much the area must have changed since then. I had no idea that the NRCA was began so many years ago. People got out more and seemed to be more social. That was a time before air conditioning when people knew their neighbors because they sat out on their porch on hot nights and did not close the house up to keep the cool air in. All the windows were open and they could here each others radios and the kids and parents yelling to each other. That was also the time when Rapid City was still a small town. Wouldn’t it be fun to go back to those times again. To slow everything down for just a little while and have time to tinker in the garage with the baseball game on the radio or stop to have a beer with the guy next door? Oh well, it was nice to go back in time and dream for just a few minutes. Thanks, Doug.
