Wild Rose Antique Collectors Society General Meeting, April 27, 2015

President, Bruce Gilbertson called the meeting to order at 7:30 pm. All members present had received the Dig & Pick. Doug Styles moved the adoption of the minutes from the March 23, 2015 General Meeting. Seconded by Bryce Ziegler. Motion carried. Correspondence received: The Buffalo, Calgary's First Canadian Collectors Club April 2015 newsletter. Old Business: 2015 Show: Bernie Haber was not present so no Show report this month. Pins commemorating our 40th annual show: the general consensus was that the pins were appreciated. While You Think About It note-pads: Tom Fritz asked if these were really worth the expenditure of $900. Gail Sabo said she used them and saw buyers walking around with the sheet in their hands. Other members had similar positive feelings. Marjorie Berg mentioned that the current supply will do for several years. Membership: John Horrigan said we had 4 new membership applications at the Show. Website: Clinton Beck announced that a problem with the server resulted in the website being "down" for several days prior to the Show. This has been corrected. New Business: John Duke raised his concern that the club has not submitted the yearly application as required by The Societies Act. Our year end was August 31 and the update is due 2 months later. interesting items appraised at show

April 19, 2015 6:09 PM

From: gpirie <[email protected]>

Hi Marj. As promised, here are a couple of items which I found to be particularly interesting: Taylor Sure Shot Trap Gun (38 caliber) in excellent condition. Stamped by Texas maker. Rare to find examples of this caliber with this stamp in any condition. Marshall Wells C. 1890s Zenith hockey stick ( rock elm) This was brought in by a grandson of the original owner, who lived to be 100 yrs old, passing away more than 40 years ago. The stick still bore the Marshall Wells zenith impression on the heel and the name of the maker is still legible. Thanks for your hospitality and support at the show. I believe this is one of the best organized shows that I participate in.

Taylor Sure-shot Trap Gun Gale did 96 appraisals at the Show. The editor _______________________________________________________________________

From: John Hanson <[email protected]> I just wanted to thank you and the other organizers on another successful show. I'm certain it's a ton of work and its much appreciated by vendors, exhibitors and customers alike. I had an old English teacher who once said, "doing a good job around here is like wetting your pants in a dark suit. It gives you a nice warm feeling all over, but nobody notices!" With that in mind, I'll have to take note of your club executive's choice of clothing next time. Cheers John Hanson, Government House Foundation

RE: 40th Annual Wild Rose Antique Club’s Show & Sale. The “Milestone 40th Anniversary of the Annual show has come and gone. This was my 4th term as Show Director/ Show Chair. This year we had some new challenges as we again went to a Saturday Sunday Show away from the Easter Weekend. We also were required to venture into two Hall’s G & H which had an excess number of vendor spaces from our previous Hall “E”. We were able to sell 50 extra spaces this year by using the “Special Bonus” pricing for the 40th show. In selling those extra spaces we were able to end up with a profit for the Club. As usual the show would not be a success without the help and assistance of other club members. Thus I would like to thank Mel Seutter and the other wrist banding crew: Norman & Dorothy Sande, and Bob & Carol Snyder; Bill Borgwardt for his fine job of advertising for the show; Nancy Ross for looking after the Pre-Sale Tickets; Donna Ziegler for looking after the show office on set up day and also for sending out show posters to the Antique shops in Alberta. Gord Soch again was helpful in getting all the show posters and calendars printed. I would like to thank the other members of our executive as well: Marj Berg for looking after the displays; Clinton Beck for having the commemorative pins ordered and ready for the show; he also had our gift ballots printed up and the pads of reminders for the public that were made available to the vendors; Bruce Gilbertson for helping on Set up day and spending time on the club table; Alan Thain for handling all of the expenses; John Horrigan for keeping the club supplies and other show materials in his basement and helping at the show and finding help for us to run the show office on Saturday and Sunday. I would like to thank all the other people that volunteered to help on the club table and the club members that were vendors and finally my Dear Wife Kim for “letting me” have our house full of show paper work and also answering phone messages. My main issues are that the club and show are always a success due to the same people. As this was our 40th show which is an incredible achievement for any organization I would have thought that the club members would be more than willing to be a part of it. As it turned out the majority of the club had no such interest and the executive and I had to make decisions that required the club to “pay” Northlands to cover our display security and also we had to pay two University students to run the club office during the show days. Given the club’s apathy towards the show I feel they no longer should have a say on what is decided in regards to the show; it should be the executive and club members who are vendors. Currently we are planning on the 41st show to return to Hall “E” and will be held April 16-17 which is again Friday setup and the show Saturday and Sunday. Respectfully Submitted Door prize winner, Derrick Greig with Bernie Bernie Haber Show Chair WRAC.

Show & Tell: What Did You Find at the Show?

Alan found a First Issue Sports Illustrated from August 16, 1954. He has all the issues relating to boxing! Also, RING magazines from 1925, 1926, and 1930. He also picked up Baseball magazine (1966 & 1967), which may become his new collection.

Joan's salt & pepper shakers

Kim found a magazine purse and her mother, Joan found a miniature Evening in Paris perfume for her.

Gord was really pleased to get a Stanley No. 2 wood plane circa 1900; "not quite as rare as Stanley No. 1, but still rare". He has only seen 2 others in his 40 years of collecting. It came from Vancouver Island and is in great shape with some original shellac. A Stanley No.1 was appraised on Antiques Road Show April 27 for $5,000! The Editor

Bob found this very early (no lifter tab and "W" for Wednesday - day of delivery) Edmonton City Dairy milk bottle cap, also 2 pins: a 1927 Western Canada Dairy Assoc. Convention (held in Edmonton) and a 1925 Saskatchewan Dairy Assoc. annual meeting which was held in Prince Albert that year.

Carol has already placed this vintage, green NORMACOL Intestinal Evacuant tin, purchased from a nurse at the show, in her bathroom tin collection. She says "it's empty"!

Carol also spotted a green, Twisted Optic Candy Dish that her 94

year old friend has been looking for since 1928 when, as a young child, she found the lid. See June 2014 Dig & Pick. Carol didn't buy it - it was $45, but did take a photo. Her friend was thrilled to see a whole candy dish.

John Horrigan got this 1942 WW2 Homefront map (2nd edition) for $25. One sold online for $750! He notes that the reason we see advertising on World War 2 maps is that in the United States a company's advertising budget was tax-free if they supported the war effort. This one has an Imperial Oil ad.

Bryce says he doesn't usually collect this sort of thing, but couldn't resist this French Ivory letter opener because of the logo. Kynoch Ltd. was an ammunition manufacturer in the 1800s. This would have been given out to special dealers and is hard to find. Kynoch was established in Witton, Birmingham in 1892 by a Scottish entrepreneur, George Kynoch. Percussion caps were produced there. Kynoch established a munitions factory on the north side of Arklow, Ireland. This factory employed several thousand workers during World War I, but closed shortly after it, all production being moved to South Africa. Seventeen workers were killed in an explosion there on 21 September 1917. It was believed that the plant was shelled by a German U-boat. Wikipedia

James says he collects Royal Albert "Country Roses" china, but has never seen a tea towel of the same pattern. Diane didn't buy a lot of buttons; has gotten fussy. She started a new collection last year: "acorn" buttons and did find one at The Show.

Vicki found an oil derrick tie (Eaton's Fashions for Canada label), "probably 1940s or 50s as it doesn't say "T.Eaton Co." Also bought a gold hat, though she vowed not to buy any more hats. Bill collects Alberta souvenirs. He found this small (much smaller than it looks in the photo) cup place-marked: Vegreville, Alta. He says it is unusual to find 1910 souvenirs for a small town. It shows main street and Bill wondered if any of those buildings still exist.

Gail spotted this unusual piece of Medalta on the second day, in the booth straight across from her. She says she and Gene are supposed to be selling Medalta, not buying it, but it's a keeper! Susanne received these Norwegian, pewter trolls from Bruce tonight as a thank you for the piece of art glass she gave him at The Show.

Doug Styles found several Canadian military items to research. One was a

Mother's Cross for a Walter Bond, KIA June 1945. He was from Grande Prairie. In a box Doug purchased, he found

medals for father and son, one from WW1 and the other from WW2 with Discharge Papers and pin.

Jim Close related that there was an April 18 article in the Edmonton Journal about the Royal Alexandra Hospital opening on that date in 1912. A correction was printed today, thanks to club member, Dorothy Sande, a Royal Alex grad. RAH replaced the Boyle Street Hospital, not the General Hospital, as stated in the first article. Jim says The Boyle Street Hospital moved from 96 St & 103 Ave to 104 Ave between 96 & 97 Street where it became a rooming house called the Lodge Hotel. This building was slated for demolition when the Remand Centre was to be built there in 1978. Jim was able to access the building and was able to buy a dresser from every room. He recalls that there were porcelain plaques near each washroom door (one per floor). He was able to buy these original washroom door locks. They are British-made and can be dialed to say "ENGAGED" or "UNENGAGED". ______________________________________________________________________________
