From Our President . . . By Dan Smith

Spring is here, changes are blossoming on the Ave,

and we have a new Design Chair. Kassie Mitchell, better

known as the 6th Ave Yarn Bomber has volunteered to

lead that committee, and given her creativity for our bike

racks, I’m excited to see what her committee has in store

for the rest of the Ave.

The board has cleared one of the last challenges fac-

ing the installation of our new banners. I’m please to

announce that TPU has signed off on the process and all

that remains, is money. We are working diligently with

our Event Coordinator and Events Chair along with Sat-

urn Barter to procure enough funds for this project

through AOA.

The gateway piece at Alder is the next one to be

painted now that the 6th Ave sign on State Street has

been finished. If you haven’t had an opportunity to drive

past it yet, I would encourage you to do so. It’s in front

of Bluebeard Coffee Roasters and it’s a great example of

all of us working together to make our district a more

creative and unified place to live, eat, work, and play.

A New Spring Event: April 17-23, 2016 Welcome to the first annual 6th Avenue Green Week. In an effort to raise awareness about our envi-ronmental footprint and how we can all help by doing a little bit (or a lot a bit), the SABD will be hosting this week and fill it with events and activities that DI-RECTLY affect our waste/reuse/recycle habits and maybe even open up new doors so that even MORE steps can be made to keep our little blue and green planet just that – blue and green.

During the ENTIRE WEEK, SKATE or BIKE to any participating location during Green Week and receive these discounts

on your total purchase.

JAZZBONES – 20% (not valid after 10pm on Fri

and Sat)

HALF PINT – 20% (not valid during happy hour)

SLUGGO’S – 25%

like you and me, come together to teach and learn from

each other. Local businesses join in this effort by offering

classes and or their own spaces as places to hold classes. Angie Lokotz

6th Ave Gateway Pieces (redux) The gateway pieces are once again in front of Blue-

beard Coffee at the entrance to 6th Ave at State Street.

Newly spruced up by 6th Ave Events Chair, artist James

Allan Tucker.

The City of Tacoma informed us that the original

placement of the pieces violated the specified ADA set-

back requirements for city sidewalks. James removed the

pieces, restored them, and painted them in vibrant colors

that would hold up day or night, rain or shine. He posi-

tioned them in their new spot the first weekend in April.

There is a plan in place for the pieces at the other end

of the Ave in front of Trapper’s Sushi at 6th and Alder. Photo by James Allan Tucker

Chocolate Stroll Coming Last Saturday in April

Robyn Liss of Ubiquitous Journey is once again organ-

izing a Chocolate Stroll. This year’s Stroll will be held

Saturday, April 30th from Noon to 4pm. Tickets are still

just $10 - and there are 20 businesses signed up so far.

Ticket sales benefit Free University. The Stroll is their

only fundraiser and it pays for printing costs for the Class

Schedules.

The Chocolate Stroll is designed to be a fundraiser that

benefits all involved. It brings new faces to 6th Ave, and it

encourages people to explore the business establishments

during the day. Shoppers purchase a ticket for $10. The

day of the Stroll, they stop in at Ubi’s to pick up a map

and a bag. The participating businesses are detailed on the

map so people know which businesses to go to.

Shoppers carry their distinctive red bags throughout the district collecting chocolates and other goodies.

When they go into the various businesses, the shoppers

collect their chocolate and get to see what the businesses

are really about. Each business signs or stamps the back of

the map and at the end of the day, the strollers turn in their

maps. The names of shoppers whose maps have every

business filled in go into a drawing for a basket prize.

The only cost for the participating businesses is the choco-

late they hand out as well as any marketing materials they

choose to provide (and possibly an extra person on staff

that day). Last year some businesses provided hot choco-

late or other beverages for Strollers as well as the choco-

late candies. Robyn can also provide a few volunteers

who can help hand out chocolate and sign off on the maps

if a business is understaffed. Contact her at Ubi’s, (253)

572-2550.

What is Free University? Free University is an emerging local non-profit organiza-

tion whose mission is to bring the community closer to-

gether through learning. Community members, people

Ch-Ch-Changes! 6th Ave is always growing and changing.

This month saw Mandelin’s Consignment Shop close

its doors at 2714 6th Ave. Owner Racheal Kragelund and

her shop were a staple on the Ave for many years, and

she also served as our SABD Vice President. We will

miss her. While Rachael has closed the shop, she is not

entirely out of the consignment business. She will be us-

ing space at Mr. Mac’s on the Hilltop for a while and will

be selling online as well. Look for her there.

Hi Voltage Records will be moving into the space vacat-

ed by Mandelin’s.

New business The Coughy Shop has opened in the space

formerly occupied by Satori’s at 2503 6th Ave. Chris and

Tracey Norton are the new owners.

Scorpio Rising has been open for a few months in the

space formerly occupied by Retrospect. With Mandelin’s

closure, they are now the only consignment clothing store

on the Ave. Ryan Swain is the owner.

Crown Bar, which will host our April 6 on 6 Social, is

changing up its menu and sprucing up its look under the

direction of Christina Smyre.

There are announcements in the windows of former Pop’s

Liquors (for a marijuana permit) and former Baroque Sa-

lon (for a nightclub). The empty space formerly occupied

by Starbuck’s will also be filled.

Brunch is the new trend on the Ave, and most restaurants

are now offering that option. Bars are also offering break-

fast options.

And work continues at the former Masa, and soon-to-open

Fish Fish Fish and Boom Boom Room.

New Advertising Opportunity in June Crossover Newsletter This year 6th Ave Business District will be part-

nering with the Hilltop Business Association for our

June Newsletters. We will be printing extra copies

that will be handed out to both business districts

(about 500 newsletters will be printed) featuring in-

formation about our Art on the Ave celebration as

well as their upcoming Hilltop Street Fair. This is an

opportunity for our businesses to advertise to busi-

nesses on the Hilltop. We have aligned our rates and

decided to keep the rates the same for the special

crossover issue. Please contact Angie Lokotz

([email protected]) if you would like to take

advantage of this new opportunity.

Hilltop has many service businesses that would

enjoy the opportunity to see what our retail and res-

taurant businesses on 6th Ave have to offer. Think

about featuring coupons or incentives to bring them

over.

Watch your email for ad sizes and rates or contact

[email protected].

city and find them needed services

Carol Wolfe spoke regarding traffic changes and ma-

rijuana laws

Reducing speed limit to 25 mph on 6th Ave (for safe-

ty and to encourage foot traffic for utilization of business-es) requires an ordinance change We will need to talk with Jennifer Kamerzell (City of

Tacoma Traffic Engineering) to work on this. Traffic cameras are a non-enforceable option. She will ask what blocks we want changed Marijuana laws July 1 - City to close down unlicensed marijuana

shops City has publicized motions and/or commissions re-

garding marijuana laws

Online fact sheet about 1000 ft buffer - reducing buff-

er to 500 ft

Burglary issues usually come from medical shops not

recreational

SABD would like 2500 ft buffer that way every vacan-

cy on the Ave isn’t taken up If we would like to give comment at City Council it may
