A12 NewsLeader Wednesday, October 31, 2012A12 NewsLeader Wednesday, October 31, 2012

Wow.

As I write this, I’ve just finished putting the profiles of 25 amazing people on these pages.

They are a group of folks we’re calling NextUP, and are choosing to single out for special men-tion with this special feature today, and a fun cocktail event on Nov. 10 at Inn at the Quay.

NextUP puts a face on an interesting evolu-tion that’s happening in New Westminster. The Royal City has always been a wonderful place, steeped in history, tight-knit, with a small-town feel that we all love.

But in recent years it’s struggled with stagnancy, particularly Downtown, where we’ve seen ur-ban decay, economic doldrums and crime.

As we all know that’s changing, and with the re-vitalization the city is experiencing, a creative, vibrant energy is taking hold.

Capacity is building in New West as invest-ment, ideas and energy flow into this city.

The 25 people on these pages embody those qualities, and are playing a big role in what you might call this Royal Resurgence.

They are people the NewsLeader, in partnership with the networking group NEXT New West, has chosen for recognition because in their own way they are doing something special for the progress of this city, whether through their jobs or through the other contributions they make to the community. The emphasis, as you’ll see, is on younger and emerging folks. Some names you’ll be hearing the first time. But no doubt you’ll be hearing them again.

This list is by no means comprehensive. In fact, there may be names that pop into your mind as you read these pages that you think should be on the list. Good! That’s the great part. Next year we can do it again. There are a lot of people

doing fantastic things to contribute to New Westminster’s future, and they should all be applauded. If you’ve got suggestions, drop me a line ([email protected]). I’d love to hear from you.

For now, let’s celebrate the 25 NextUP honor-ees you’re reading about today.

I hope to see you on Nov. 10. It’s going to be an amazing night.

—Chris Bryan, Editor

Paul Minhas cultural hub host

Paul opened Heritage Grill on Columbia Street seven years ago, seeing potential for a live music venue in an area poorly served. His goal is to bring all genres of music and people together, and create a hub central to Metro Vancouver. Paul hosts everything from burlesque shows and drag shows to slam poetry and philosopher cafés. He launched a scholarship program for NWSS jazz band, and donates to the food bank, Camp Mumba (helping kids under age 16 af-fected by HIV/AIDS), the RCH foundation. Every year, the Grill hosts a free Christmas turkey dinner for the community. Paul says the changes in Downtown New West are in-credible. It’s about time, he says, and it’s great for the city, and the arts and culture commu-nity. Change is good as New West is thriving with local talent.
