6 Metal6 Metal Cladding Systems.

Metal cladding systems used in exterior walls, where the metal skin acts both as the weather-resistant barrier and water-resistive barrier, shall be designed in accordance with Chapter 42 or 44 .

Statement of Problem and Substantiation for Public Comment

Reason:At the May 2012 NFPA BLD-SCM meeting both representatives from AISI and NRCA asked the committee to approve the original proposal with the caveat that further work would take place to coordinate with other steel and roofing trade association work occurring nationally. This comment is proposing to delete the originally submitted text as it reflects that work to ensure consistency and coordination with the other national model code.

This proposal to modify reflects that work to ensure consistency and coordination.

No modifications are being proposed for Section 38.9.7.8.1. This section covers adequately that the appropriate test requirements for metal panel roof systems that are installed over solid decking or substrate are to be tested in accordance with the list of tests shown.

However, the modification to Section 38.9.7.8.2 makes it clear that metal panel roof systems that are structural, and that span between structural supports without a solid substrate, only a few to be tested based on standards that are appropriate for these applications. Further, modifications to terminology designed to be consistent with the National Roofing Contractors Association - Roofing Manual and the Metal Building Manufacturers Association - Roofing Manual.

Finally, Section 38.9.7.8.3 was modified to reflect that sheet steel metal panel roofing systems designed in accordance with the AISI Specifications did not need to refer back to this section as the necessary design parameters and testing requirements were already covered in the Specification.

Public Comment No. 30-NFPA 5000-2013 [ Section No. 45.5.16.1

[Excluding any Sub-Sections] ]

Fire retardant–treated wood shall be a wood product impregnated with chemical by a pressure process or other means during manufacture meeting the requirements in 45.5.15.1.1 through 45.5.15.1.5. Materials treated by other means after manufacture shall be considered a fire retardant coated material and meet the requirements of fire-retardant coating in Chapter 5, NFPA 703. [703:4.1.1]

Statement of Problem and Substantiation for Public Comment

Small scale testing of coated materials has shown they will not perform as expected. Tests using ASTM E69 and E160 show that the untreated wood will exhibit significant progressive combustion..
